This is the loan SSE was asking for to build the nightclub/bar that was going to fetch $22,000/season for seat owners in Sec. 134 - 102.

“Over complaints of worried hoteliers, Broward commissioners said they’d loan the tourism development money to Arena Operating Company, to improve the center-ice seating section and the executive suites at the BankAtlantic Center.” Wow.. Yormark said this loan was for other improvements not for center ice seating upgrades. What a crock of monkeys…

This whole thing is a joke. That stupid “Club Red” is only going to help perpetuate that “no one goes to the games” when those seats are shown empty on camera. It’s hard enough to get the corporate owner of season seats in the lower bowl, to fill them on a regular basis >:-(

The ADT club is for the all inclusive seat owners……center ice shouldn’t be!! The cameras don’t show whether those seats are empty or not.

So will there be bouncers preventing you from entering the club? Kinda bad when the New York Yankees don’t even feel that exclusionary. They allow all fans to visit each level of the stadium to get access to all the different foods and stores they have. Guess the Panthers are gonna reduce capacity by doing this and letting the commoners eat cake in their “NEW” untarped seats which they’ll give some cheesy marketing name like “Cloud 9 Lives”

Sun-Sentinel editorial

From columnist Mike Mayo:

A week after informally agreeing to give up to $12 million to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts to help build swank bars and premium seats where arts patrons can sip cocktails, the Broward County Commission approved a $7.7 million loan so the Florida Panthers can build $20,000-a-year seats where hockey fans can indulge in fine liquors.

Sounds to me like we’ve either got a drinking problem or a priority problem.

Amazing to me with all our economic troubles some people are still spending money like it’s going out of style. Did they really threat the team is belly up without the dough? Ha!
The only thing that will bring this franchise the money and success is Dale Tallon and Mike Santos.
…and Bill Torre who made that happen!

Supposedly, they reworked the terms of loans with SS&E that gives the county 30%, as opposed to 20% previously, if they break the $10 M mark, as opposed to the $12 M previously. Too lazy to look for it now, but according to the team’s funny bookkeeping (similar to the Marlins), they haven’t broken that $10 M number in years, always hitting somewhere between the $5 M and $7 M mark. Which utterly baffles me, when they have consistently been listed amongst the busiest arenas in North America by Pollstar.com over the last decade. I think its time for every Broward county Resident, who is also a Panthers’ fan, to call their commissioner and demand the Panthers open their books to an independent auditor. I’ll bet money the rest of the NHL will want to see the results as well after financing Cohen for years.

by MrOmnipotent on Nov 10, 2011 8:58 AM EST reply actions

Panthers were given $7.5 just a year ago

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Issues/2010/06/Issue-185/Facilities-Venues/County-Agrees-To-Give-Bankatlantic-Center-A-Short-Term-Loan.aspx

And that was after there was a report saying the Area received $8.4 million more than they were supposed to from the county the year previously.

I’ll never financially support the Panthers by attending one of their games EVER again. I’ll support the players. I’ll cheer for wins and boo bad play, but I’ll do it from the seat in front of my tv, or from a barstool. The more I read and remember how Yormack has stolen from the taxpayers, the more I remember why I haven’t paid to go to a single game since before the lockout (Anyone remember Yormack giving keys away to the Arena and a special entrance, to anyone buying a million dollar condo at Trump Tower?). And I actually had plans for later in the year, but not now.

They’re just lookin to screw the average fan.

This doesn’t make any sense to me, as posited. Why would a sports franchise go out of its way – taking millions from local taxpayers as part of the effort – simply to “screw the average fan”?

by Donny Rivette on Nov 10, 2011 10:18 AM EST up reply actions

Donny, look through the history of this franchise. Every single thing has been to cater to the wealthy of this franchise. They constantly are doing away with the more affordable things, and replacing it with things designed to cater to the wealthier 5% of people who attend a game. They’re takin money from the tax payer, which in Broward is closer to the poverty line, than the average person in Palm Beach, and using it for exclusive areas for the wealthiest fans. For someone like me, I can’t afford $20 K a year season tickets, but they’re takin my taxes and using it to cater to those who can, and not doing anything to improve my experience or make a game more affordable to me.

Pro tip: There’s no two drink minimum at the arena. No one is requiring you to buy a hot dog and a beer.

It’s interesting that you’re proud of not supporting the team in a tangible way. Go ask a Thrashers fan how proud they are for having never stooped so low as to actually buy a ticket to a game.

by Spencer-IV on Nov 10, 2011 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, a hockey team and $7 M annually, as it seems to be a reoccurring theme, is much more important than paying teachers, or gettin roads repaired, or even just paying off the county’s debt. I’d rather do away with the team and the thieves and continue watching the sport as I do now, on the internet and traveling to minor league games, than have my taxes go to people who show no tangible appreciation for me being a diehard fan.

by MrOmnipotent on Nov 10, 2011 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

0% of that $7M would have come anywhere near paying for a school district job or a single pot hole. Read some of the objections raised at the meeting, it would have gone to advertising or improvements for other county tourist attractions.

by Spencer-IV on Nov 10, 2011 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

And what’s to have stopped them from takin that same money and distributing it to the school district? Or using it for the Fire/Police dept. (since its becoming all one thing now)? I’d rather they have used that money for advertising for tourism, using it to bring in more business, which in actuality the Panthers aren’t doing. Other than the port and beaches, Broward really has no tourist attractions.

I think that may be an accident more than anything else. Ever see the parking lots of the Sawgrass mall when there’s an event at the BAC where they charge for parking? I think the Panthers just realized they shouldn’t bother charging for parking.

by Phalange on Nov 10, 2011 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

The Panthers add in the cost of parking into every ticket now, as opposed to charging $10 or $15 back in the day. Their reasoning was to “save” people from injuries, as they crossed over into the Mall parking lot, as people drove like idiots to try and beat the traffic out of the area. So, in actuality, parking isn’t free.

by MrOmnipotent on Nov 10, 2011 11:33 AM EST up reply actions

At one time the nominal fee added was $7 per ticket. That was a bargain if you went to the game by yourself. Two people, it was a wash. I have three, and effectively lost money on the parking fee being included…

FYI, your mileage may vary. Please raise your seats and tray tables to their fully upright and locked positions.

by OldDave on Nov 10, 2011 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

They’re not near the bottom in ticket prices. They’re right smack dab in the middle, 15th or 16th in ticket prices. Detroit’s average ticket is less than a Panthers’ and those are in MUCH higher demand.

by MrOmnipotent on Nov 10, 2011 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

But when you take out the “parking fee”? Anyone looked at that – we know at least $10-$15 of it’s parking…

by badger737 on Nov 10, 2011 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

Yea, but then you have to live in Detroit. You can buy a house in Detroit for less than a full season of premium seats at the BAC.

by Spencer-IV on Nov 10, 2011 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

and have it broken into as many times as dollars used to pay for a premium seat at the BAC

by Rob PKane McMahon on Nov 10, 2011 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

Those posted ticket prices are the retail price. Those aren’t what people pay to actually get in, considering all of the package deals/vouchers/etc. Every time you turn around, they are offering $25 lower bowl seats, when you purchase more than one game. Our seats are a steal……
