Isles' Grabner speaks out on Panthers camp: "I wasn't even close to playing my game"
With what is hopefully the final time we'll drop waived winger - and scoring sensation - Michael Grabner's name, Ian Walker of the National Post brings us a few very honest and forthright comments from 1/4 of Florida's return in the Keith Ballard deal with Vancouver at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft last June:
On his showing in camp:

I agree. I wish we could have given Grabner a better shot too – but it wasn’t to be. That being said, there’s no guarantee that he scores 20 goals the whole season here. Ask Michael Repik why.

I disagree and I know this issue has come up a lot and I’ll get some flack for ressurecting it, but it comes down to asset management and a clear understanding of the makeup of the league. And Tallon for all intents and purposes displayed neither in that situation— granted the message he made by waiving Grabner spoke loud to the roster and set a precedent, but it was a very costly message. For me as a Panthers fan, it’s less to do about Grabner and more to do about Tallon’s naivity.

Welcome to dealing with prospects. How many projects have taken up time, money and space on the Panthers’ roster for too long? Someone brought up Anthony Stewart, but when he was here there were plenty of us who were waiting for him to be gone.
There’s a certain amount of patience in dealing with young players, but sometimes you have to cut a guy with potential loose even if it means he still might get better on another team. Tallon let it be known that people were competing for spots and he didn’t make it. That’s why Vancouver traded him in the first place. It didn’t work out. Hell, it might not have worked out in New York if there hadn’t been a coaching change.

Does this mean we can abuse people making Grabner references in the game threads now? ;)

Moving On
He wasn’t a fit, its a shame but its the way of the game. Good to see the kid living up to potential. But if he wasn’t a fit then its not only bad for him but the roster too, no harm no foul, wish him the best

The truth hurts for Grabner. I think that he would have more of chance with the Panthers getting anywhere soon than the Islanders. I thought that the Panthers were in sad shape, until I heard about the Islanders attendance.
I agree time to move on. We need to find a WEISS clone and a BURE clone in the next draft.
I’m very glad he made this statement, shows a lot of maturity
Also, awesome beard he’s growing

Apologists!
What no one mentions in sloughing off the quick waiving of a 22-year-old prospect with (as Deboer even commented) “world class speed” is that we had just TRADED FOR THE GUY! We gave up a solid player in Ballard to get Grabner, and then we don’t even let him get out of training camp? What happened to the philosophy that we’ve always heard when we traded for pedestrian guys like Steve Emminger, that “when you trade for a guy, you play him.” I’m sorry, but for a team with no real scorers and building for the future to let a young, talented scorer go for NOTHING is horrible. To look at the league stats and see that 25 goals by Grabner’s name makes me sick. When are the Panthers going to learn that to actually win games in this league, not just lose competitively, that you need scoring and scorers?
FLA traded Ballard’s contract for a first-round pick. That’s the deal.
