Tallon hijacks NHL newswires as Florida Panthers own 2011 Trade Deadline
It was a snoozer of a day for just about everyone but the Cats' front office as four bodies - and bundle of contract dollars - were shipped out of Sunrise in exchange for, well, let's call them "pieces" for now. More in-depth stuff coming up later today, but to quickly summarize the afternoon's welcome local implementation of the nuclear option:
- F Radek Dvorak, 5th-round pick to ATL for RW Niclas Bergfors and LW Patrick Rissmiller
- D Dennis Wideman to WAS for C Jake Hauswirth, 3rd-round pick
- D Bryan Allen to CAR for LW Sergei Samsonov
- F Chris Higgins to VAN for D Evan Oberg, 3rd-round pick
Perhaps most intriguing is who was not dealt: Stephen Weiss, David Booth, Marty Reasoner, and Tomas Vokoun all remain with the club or at least until mere minutes before the Entry Draft opens.
Again, we'll have some op/ed in a bit, but here's coach Peter DeBoer's Florida Panthers roster heading into Tuesday's game in Carolina:
Forwards: Bergfors, Steve Bernier, Booth, Darcy Hordichuk, Hugh Jessiman, Kenndal McArdle, Reasoner, Michal Repik, Samsonov, Mike Santorelli, Bill Thomas, Scott Timmins, Weiss.
Defense: Joe Callahan, Jason Garrison, Dmitry Kulikov, Alexander Sulzer, Mike Weaver
Yikes. Obviously there will be a recall or four over the next few hours, but what you see above is called a "rebuild". Not a Mike Keenan or Jacques Martin-style Band-Aid-and-Stumpel "rebuild".
We were promised the real deal, and it has arrived. Buckle up.

I’m now hoping every other team’s games go to OT and the Panthers lose them all in regulation.
Still feel dirty though.
its all apart of the process. Itll pay off. We have a great core of young defenders (Kulikov, Ellerby, Gudbranson, Petrovic, Robak) along with Garrison and Weaver(shut down line), now we draft forwards starting w/ sean couturier
Not that he’s going to be in that top group but what do you think of Tomas Jurco? He’s my favourite player in the draft. Love his skillset.

The only questionable move for me was the Wideman deal. I know it came out of left field for Tallon, but I think he could have gotten a bit more— especially when you consider the precedence the McCabe deal set.
Everything else was great.
also agreed, I say that that deal was the only mar today
Tallon certainly could have gotten more, but he should have never traded Wideman in the first place

"but he should have never traded Wideman in the first place"

Aww man, there’s nothing left to argue about now :P
However, I hope you reserved a spot for me on the TallonTank!

Yeah sounds like he made it through
Special Agent 00Zero

Pretty sure he never went on waivers...
I have not seen anything to confirm he went on waivers.
My thinking is that what Tallon does is the following process: 1)Leave him in the AHL until next Tuesday, so he gets onto the AHL clear day rosters. I believe what that does is that is the AHL trade deadline, and they set who will be eligible to play in the playoffs…. Then depening on how you read the CBA either 2a) they recall Kennedy. If he is still subject to waviers, he would not be eligible to play on any teams playoff team in either the NHL or AHL; or 2b) He is allowed to be recalled on emergency basis… which means he is allowed to be recalled without the waiver rules to replace ONE designated player only until that player returns. In this case he would be designated to replace Olesz and be here for the rest of the year.

Ellerby called up, according to George Richards.

FINALLY!!!
Sorry for the swearing, but the whole monologue about waiting 10 years is eerily familiar. Darnit, Panthers fans, let the celebration of tanking begin with a little Less than Jake.
Tallon must have missed all of Froliks flaws because he got them back and then some with Bergfors and Samsonov.
Sammy’s gone come July 1st. Bergfors is likely a work in progress.

Don’t think anyone’s mentioned it lately, but Frolik doesn’t have a single point in 8 games with CHI. Oh, and a -4.

Wideman for an ECHL player and a third round pick? That was really the best they could do for the puck-moving defenseman that everyone supposedly covets at the trade deadline? Compound that with the fact they essentially gave up Nathan Horton to get Wideman and the deal looks even more disastrous from a Florida perspective. They failed to move goalie Tomas Vokoun and now risk losing him for nothing if he walks as an unrestricted free agent in the summer. Trading Bryan Allen to get Sergei Samsonov was nothing but a salary dump. That said, the Panthers do deserve kudos for getting Niclas Bergfors in exchange for Radek Dvorak and hanging onto Stephen Weiss and David Booth, two core players who could be part of the solution if the Panthers ever find it.

THN is the most pro-Canadian (and anti-Panther) hockey media outlet in existence. If they didn’t notice there were no blockbuster or excessive trades that happened today. They were all reasonable, no one pulled a Keenan.

I don’t understand giving up on Allen, Tallon will spend all summer looking for a d-man in free agency to replace him.
What will he save? 500k that wont be used anyways? For a player who probably wont be as good as Allen!!
And Allen was Gudbransons mentor!!!!
it’ll be 2.9 minus whatever he has to spend on Allens replacement
we have to add d-men, we have one guy with more than 2 years experience
Fine with me, Kulikov, Guds and Ellerby are out Big 3 next year, whatever we do after that is anyones guess. I have a hunch Garrison and Weaver are back
Still not sold on Guds being here. They are under NO PRESSURE to bring him in yet.

We have a decent 6 right now and a good defense coach with a couple of guys that can be called up. And they can always pick another guy up in the summer. No reason to hurry the guy if he’s not ready.

Cap hit is 2.9, salary is 3.15M.
Tallon can now fill the role with his own player.

20 million under the cap floor and Tallon wont keep Allen because he makes 3.15 instead of a deserved 2?
Like I said: clean sheet.

I looked at the UFAs for next year…Richards is the prize, other notables are Ville Leino, Tim Connolly, and Gagne, after that, it sucks. I dont see how we will spend 30M in the off season
Everyone’s in the same boat. Not expecting anything flashy on July 1st anyway.

Everyone seems to think Versteeg is his replacement, so there’s a good chance Leino’s gone after the season.

Don’t forget that all the RFAs we keep will likely get a raise. We’re not going to be paying guys like Kulikov less than $1 million a year forever.

Florida Panthers: Quite a day for Dale Tallon, on several fronts. As George Richards writes:
Gone: Dennis Wideman(notes), Radek Dvorak, Chris Higgins(notes) and Bryan Allen(notes).
Still here: Tomas Vokoun(notes), Stephen Weiss(notes), Marty Reasoner(notes) and David Booth(notes).
"We stuck to our plan. These were very hard decisions to make,’’ Tallon said soon after the deadline ended, his Blackberry still ringing. “We kept our core together and kept our eye on the ball as far as the future is considered. We added picks, prospects and got younger. We really solidified our future.”
Florida’s moves gives Tallon a ton of money next year as the team has just $18 million in committed salaries. If the salary cap remains close to this year’s ceiling of $58 million, that means Florida will have $40 million to remake things – if Tallon is allowed to spend close to the cap.Wideman went to the Capitals for big forward prospect Jake Hauswirth(notes) and a 2011 3rd-round pick. Dvorak became RFA-to-be Niclas Bergfors. Bryan McCabe(notes) became Tim Kennedy(notes) and a 2011 3rd-round pick. Cory Stillman became Ryan Carter(notes) and a 2011 5th-round pick. Higgins became Evan Oberg(notes) and a third. Allen became Samsonov, an expiring contract. Michael Frolik became Jack Skille(notes) and Co. Add in the acquisition of Alexander Sulzer(notes) on defense, and Tallon traded everything but his core for little more than picks and several bags of pucks. It’s all about what he does with the space and if keeping a core than hasn’t won on a decade together was the right decision. GRADE: B
The projected cap ceiling you give as around $58M, or $40M over the current level of committed salaries. There’s some minimum level that must be spent (80% of the cap?). What is this minimum – how much $$$ does Tallon have to spend even if the team goes as cheap as is allowed?
I think that was in English. I’m too tired to tell.
yes it did :)
On June 23, 2010, the NHL announced that the salary cap would be increased by $2.6 million. As a result, the new salary cap ceiling is set at $59.4 million while the salary cap floor is $43.4 million.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010%E2%80%9311_NHL_season
per capgeek projected spending for this year is $47,614,657
Would it be good or bad if the group of kids that will be playing out the season play .800 hockey & make the playoffs?

Kennedy
Still don’t get this whole waiver wire thing…I know he’s in the AHL now but when should we expect to see him with the big club? Do waiver wire rules carry over to the following season? Or could he come up next year with out fear of being Islandered?

That’s a concern, of course. There are a few ways to slip him through before then, but honestly, what’s the rush?

Waivers reset at the end of the season. Or to be more specific, at the end of the team’s playing season.

so during the offseason anyone can be brought to the big club for fall training without having to go though waiver claims? (how is it determine who has to clear waivers if they are sent back down before the season starts?)
Here’s a site that discusses waivers:
http://www.nhlscap.com/waivers.htm
Its a bit dated but it applies since that was the last agreement. And yes its confusing.
Florida Panthers. Good Hockey, Great Advertising!
Short answer is age combined with number of games played (and age at first contract signing). Long answer is look at coasterg’s link.
Waivers reset at the end of the season means just that. Everyone starts with the big club in the fall no matter their status the previous season, and no one has to go through waivers until the cuts start and they send players down to the minors, which will usually be en masse just before the roster limit goes into effect.
