Availability of Bryan McCabe
Jumping over from Blueshirt Banter. I wanted to know your guys take on Bryan McCabe and his availability at the deadline. I would assume that with an expiring contract and the Panthers on the outside looking in that he would be available. I know that he broke his jaw - and continued to play? - and his return day may cut it close with deadline. But what do you guys think? Does Tallon ship him out? If so, at what price?
Thanks guys.

I don’t think he’ll be back before the trade deadline. And if this team is even close, I don’t think he gets traded primarily because of how much of an impact he apparently has (look at where the team was before he got injured…it was playing the best hockey of the year and then we’ve collapsed into a holding pattern for the lack of a better term).
I think
Tallon will make him available, but it will matter where the Panthers sit in the standings a week before the deadline. If we’re still treading water in the playoff race, I think he will be open to bids, if we’re making the push, Tallons going to want him back for the rest of the season.
And from an outsiders perspective, think of Tallon as a madman who will make it worth his trouble to trade his captain…

Of all the available UFAs on the club, he’s the one I’d most like to see retained. At a substantial discount, of course.

I heard he’d been playing with the broken finger for quite some time before the game where he had his jaw broken. Nuts.
It was the jaw, not nuts.

Everyone is available
He’s skating again, on his own. Depending on how fast he can ramp it back up and how soon he’s allowed to take contact, he may be back around deadline time. The decision, though, will likely depend largely on how the team does in the next two weeks.

Don’t even bring that up. That was BS. Guy asked for a trade 18 months before his contract was up and our loser of a GM kept him around trying to “convince him to stay” then bailed when it was obvious he wasn’t and he’d waited too long to get anything significant back in a trade.
With McCabe, he may very well want to stay and there’s a good chance management wants him around a bit longer. Jay didn’t want to be here, period.

Yeah, I’m still bitter. Why do you ask?

Exactly. Bouwmeester was a totally different situation – should have been traded prior to his final season.
I will say that if McCabe somehow stays, what do we do with all our defensemen? Wideman, Kulikov, Garrison, Weaver, Ellerby have to be locks for next year and you’ve got to think that Gudbrandson is certainly going to get every chance to have a place on the roster next year.
All things being equal, what’s the market for Caber? Weird freaking couple of years for FAs anyway, not to mention the ridiculous returns they bring at the deadline. I mean come on…Seidenberg, Dom Moore, and Leopold were all worth second-rounders? Either a masterful job by Sexton or the world’s truly flat.
