This is going to be a wild summer in Florida. If the cap goes up, Dale Tallon might need to spend $30 million US just to get to the floor. Tallon will be helped by three things: the money (obviously), his own reputation in rebuilding the Blackhawks and the decision to keep Stephen Weiss and David Booth. Good players will want to play with other good players. He's also in great position to take advantage of teams needing to drop high-level talent for budgetary reasons.

I think this is going to be a big gain. It’s just weird to think of the Panthers as big spenders. There are a few teams out there that may have overpaid players and if the Panthers have to spend the money anyway, they might as well get good players for it. Using bonus money to “spend” to the cap floor is something that will warm the bottom of Yormark’s heart. I wonder how many times he’s forwarded a highlighted copy of that page of the CBA to Tallon.
Love to be on the receiving end of the whole Blackhawks-Thrashers thing like last year. Maybe Philadelphia, maybe Vancouver

Spending to the CAP FLOOR?????
Personally, I would rather hear Tallon & Company talk about the $42 million they have to spend (ceiling) rather than the $30 million (floor).
The thing that people don’t seem to understand is that as the cap ceiling increases, so do player salaries. This summer could see a number of free agents sign with teams for $10 million or more. Do you really think the Panthers will do a deal with a number like that?
Thankfully, the Panthers have to spend to the cap floor (just imagine if they didn’t have to do that). So even if the Cats have $30 million in their pockets, other teams that are willing to spend to the ceiling (which should be somewhere around $60 mil) will also have plenty to spend. It’s going be just as difficult to land the marquee players as ever, so it’s difficult to think that the Panthers will sign any top-tier UFAs. More than likely, they’ll go after the 2nd tier guys who will sign for $4 – $6 million.

This is going to be the most Important Summer in the history of the Franchise.I believe he’s right….He eluded to all the $$$$$$$$$$$ they have to spend…..yeaaaaaaah !!!!
Wouldn't you rather ...
… have heard Yormark say something to the effect of how much money the team could spend up to the cap ceiling instead of the floor? There’s a HUGE difference between $30 million (floor) and $42 million (ceiling).
In reality, the team will have less to spend because they need to lock in Garrison, Ellerby, Reasoner and others to multi-year deals. Those contracts are sure to eat into that much talked about $30 mil.
Part of my ufa wish list
Pos GP G A P $
Tomas Kopecky R 62 12 24 36 1.2m
Brooks Laich C 64 14 21 35 2.1m
Alex Frolov L 43 7 9 16 3m
Pascal Dupuis R 63 11 16 27 1.4m
Craig Anderson G 1.8m
My two cents...
Call me crazy, but I think that money is going to go faster than anyone realizes. There’s tons of it, but I still like our position getting guys like Ellerby and Kulikov locked up, while having plenty of cap space to add in a big time player.
Great point. We have quite a few RFA’s and then there are the UFA’s like Vokoun. Realistically there isn’t going to be as much left as we think.

brad richards...
Anyone!!!!! he will not resign in Dallas….how would he look in a panther jersey. he will be the big fish this summer. not sure of any other “big” names out there.
@ RJ215 i would like brooks laich for sure. plays in traffic. gets those “garbage” goals. we need a guy or two that plays that way.
A guess: Richards might be tired of rebuilds. Would have to be an insurmountable offer by FLA

I make it a rule in fantasy hockey to avoid players who’ve endured concussions. I hope the Panthers do the same, because after even just one, they’re never the same player and never quite attain that same production.

If Richards doesn’t stay in Dallas, look at him to go to New York (75%) or back to Tampa (25%).

Richards ONLY to the Rangers for Torts. Otherwise Dallas or MAYBE a Big Market team NOT in a rebuild. Less than 1 in 100 chance you see him here…and as much as they need to spend the money, DON’T see any 8 million dollar guys here…ever!

Hard to see Tallon dropping that kind of coin, certainly not at this stage.

We should go get ONE of those top defenders: Wisniewski, Pitkanen or Ehrhoff
And that Stamkos Kid, if we could do it w/out spending more than 10M i say do it
I hate Wisniewski. Of course, if he was on the team, we wouldn’t have to play against him…
