Tuesday Caterwaul: Panthers GameDay Open Forum

Photo

Eight in a row. That's the winning streak in which the Chicago Blackhawks find themselves currently enmeshed. And at just the right time, former Panthers winger Michael Frolik has begun to contribute offensively: 4 points (2 goals) in his past three are evidence that he's growing comfortable in an established system which isn't leaning on him to carry the mail. It's a perfect situation for a guy we've watched grow up over the past three seasons, but even he admits tonight's match from Sunrise borders on the surreal: "I want to play the best hockey against every team, but it's a little bit weird that (I) played here a few weeks ago."

The other element of that February 9th deal remains out with an ankle issue, so forward Jack Skille will have to wait for a reunion with the club that drafted him until next season at the earliest.

Related:  is anyone really all that bothered by this? I just don't see it being anywhere near as harmful, PR-wise, as the direct marketing to fans of the Penguins, Flyers, Rangers, et al. The Hawks are here once this season, Tallon's former club, let the love-in happen and move along.

Also:  It's roster "clear day" for the Amerks; sort it all out here, as all eyes will turn toward Tim Kennedy at noon.

Plus:  Check out Mike Chen's breakdown on the NHL's suitors for the next  television contracts line up. A terrific read.

I’m really hoping Kennedy is able to make it into tonights game, would be awesome to see him suit up in his first game in almost a year.

The Tallon Meet and Greet really doesn’t bother me as much as the other marketing efforts. After all he was the architect of the Cup team.

I agree – you’ve got to market the big teams coming and the Hawks did just win. They’re a big draw, so it’s not so bad. At the same time, they do a little shameless Panther promoting, which is what we should be doing. Convert some of those Hawks fans in liking the Panthers too – especially if they’re local.

Now, this season I don’t mind the meet and greet because he was on their staff as of last season, but after this year – no more.

Tallon on DeBoer via MH
Bigger changes are still possible. I asked if coach Pete DeBoer would have a fourth season. Tallon only said he would be reevaluated.

TK Tonight??

Does this mean he’s on the way NOW??
And PDB is as good as gone ONLY when something better is the option! No doubt he has made his share of “misassessments” and mistakes but considering what he has done with what he has to work with is quite commendable! Like a young player coming into his own, eventually so will this Coach who will no doubt be a winner over time in this league!

Exactly, there is no reason to dump Petey unless there is someone else out there who can do a better job

Ken Hitchcock.

Or Lindy Ruff if he doesn’t stay in Buffalo.

Just saying.

PDB wont remain here as coach. Tallon will bring in his man to lead the Frnachise to the playoffs. He has a rebuilduing plan and PDB will be victim of it. But tbh, we didnt even have a 4 game winning streak. If not the coach who else should go. Well the team is already younger and our crappy PP will get a new look. The best coach on the team is still our PK coach.. He has done more than PDB in the three years.

by Boothy16 on Mar 8, 2011 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

Right on.. Other coaches maybe be available, especially Ruff…
My concerns with Deboer are:
- allowing his players to sit back and not give retribution for some of the hits on other panthers players.
- I also would prefer an enforcer/fighter to always be in the lineup. good teams always have one available such as Cooke and Carcillo. Panthers are not allowed to have one.
- – the nonreaction to obvious goals and penalties on the ice by Deboer.

Thus, I am unsure if he is the right guy long term for the Panthers.

haste makes waste

PDB does not allow players to sit back. May explain the early Grabner departure. Or I have read here complaints that Dadonov, Matthias, Bernier etc.. are not seeing enough minutes or time in special team situations. I’m ok with a change so long as it’s for the better
I like Lindy but for what reason would the Sabres let him go? I think maybe Buffalo would want to trade coaches with us…really I wouldn’t want to right now…I think there has been an adjustment and comfort level that exists now with PDB and the young players that are still here All the close games this year and some charachter finally showing it’s face, this coach is far from failure! Round the league he’s getting more credit than we’re giving him.
And re: retribution, we just do not have any guys to do that, other than Darcy; did you forget him? Cooke and Carcillo are the same animal: Goon’s with a little bit of game. This is why Dale wants to get bigger, stronger and faster. Then we won’t need any designated goon.

The Sabres have not let Lindy Ruff go. He and GM Darcy Regier’s contracts both expire this season. The new owner, Terry Pegukla, came in, looked at how things were run and offered both two year extensions. Regier signed the extension. Ruff did not. Regier’s extension was announced and one of the beat reporters asked Ruff if he got one as well. Ruff answered that he did not have an extension, but the reporter pressed and asked if he was offered one. He tersely answered that he was offered an extension and has refused to discuss it further.

So, if he walks, it looks like it’s his choice.

Can’t dispute Ruff’s success with “lesser” clubs – nor his history with FLA – but does he perhaps fall into the “hasn’t gotten past the ‘New’ NHL” border?

The guy’s been a wizard with young teams for 14 years, but will FLA next season be any different than BUF of the past five? Not to mention he’s had complete autonomy under Regier (who’s dealt with numerous ownership changes), which brings up the question of whether he can work under a focused manager with a plan like Tallon, in a completely new environment.

No way on Hitchcock. Ruff is not leaving Buffalo – the Sabres owner all but said it the other day.

Though I will say that I don’t think that Petey isn’t doing a bad job with his lump of clay, I think that the enormous improvement shown by the PK unit means our next coach is on the bench now.

by badger737 on Mar 8, 2011 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

I think he gives PDB one more year, but that Murphy is probably the coach of the future, unless there’s someone out there Tallon likes who we don’t know about.

Yes. Tim Kennedy will be in the lineup tonight :)

So we’re just looking for the same effort as the Carolina and Washington games right? Play their hearts out and hope to steal the game?

Lose, please lose. No need to win against the Blackhawks. Those are the team that we simply play better against..

Poor guy. He definitely deserves better. If he’s still here next year, let’s make sure he’s a 40+ game winner.

by dcfish on Mar 8, 2011 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

Poor Us!!

Some of his gaffes are totally incomprehensible.
Nicest guy in the world but wouldn’t you say his time here is done?
And at what price do you expect to retain him??
A 50% discount(2.8M) would still be too pricey for what we’ll get…
a less than .500 supposed superstar. Admit he is a workhorse but still…YUCK!
Clemmer is inked and as the regular in NJ when Martin Brodeur went down, he was excellent! I see Ty Plante as ready now and set to be penciled in as the Back Up. If not him, Dale will bring back in some deal a NHL’r to compete or Back Up. Otherwise
there is plenty capable in the minors and/or unsigned to pluck if needed.
Markstrom will surely get called up sometime next season to see if he’s ready. That is a asset we do not want to ruin by pushing in too soon.

2.8 too pricey for a goalie that puts up 9.20 + save pct and 3.00< GAA?

Seriously?

by Colt1235 on Mar 8, 2011 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

The best thing to do with TVo is wait him out. If he goes and signs for $4-5 million/year somewhere else then that’s fine. But if the Panthers wait him out and he gets into a Nabokov or even Niemi situation, then we can probably bring him back for $2.5-3 million a year which is a great value for an All-Star goalie.

by roywhitby on Mar 8, 2011 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

To play devil's advocate...

Vokoun stops the shots he’s supposed to stop. However, the Panthers are usually giving up lots of shots, so that save percentage gets bumped up. He gives up a LOT of soft goals – and usually in bunches.

That being said, Vokoun is a high-end netminder. He’s definitely worth a $3 million a year deal. That’s where I’d draw my line if I’m Dale, 2 years, $6 million.

by badger737 on Mar 8, 2011 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

Voky Booth and Weiss get snubbed as stars just because of their team, no because of their skill

by Chris S Roberts on Mar 8, 2011 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

2.8 would be nowhere near “too pricey” I’d say even 4 would be fair and reasonable, give or take a few added bonuses in the contract, such as wins etc. lol and Plante instead of Markstrom? Never going to happen. If anything Markstrom will backup Clemmenson (and I’m sure eventually taking over as #1) and Maybe down the line Plante would be in to backup.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Mar 8, 2011 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

Plante has played much better than Markstrom this season. Markstrom needs a lot more seasoning in the AHL. Plante being an older prospect, and the fact that he’s playing so well to me makes him the goalie of choice if we need to promote from within.

by Craig Fischer on Mar 8, 2011 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

Plante has played very well this year and if Clemmensen’s the starter next year, it’s Plante who deserves the shot as backup. Give Markstrom another year in the A and then let the two battle it out for the starter position.

But, really, I don’t think Vokoun’s going anywhere. I think Tallon wants him here for another year or two and Vokoun doesn’t really want to leave. The rest is just contract negotiation.
