A brief history of the Peter DeBoer era
The Florida Panthers' now-former head coach certainly had an unenviable trial by fire during his first three years as a top dog in the National Hockey League:
- Employed by 3 separate ownership groups (Alan Cohen, Stu Siegel/Cliff Viner, Viner)
- Served under 3 general managers (Jacques Martin, Randy Sexton, Dale Tallon)
- Coached 55 players in regular season games over three-year span
- Record during service: 246 games coached, 103 wins, 107 losses, 36 OT losses, 242 points, .491 win %
- 2008-09: 41-30-11 93 points (missed postseason on tiebreaker vs Montreal, since eradicated)
- 2009-10: 32-37-13 77 points (last in Southeast Division)
- 2010-11: 30-40-12 72 points (15th in Eastern Conference)

I don’t know… the 3 different GMs thing strikes me as even worse.

That and 3 ownership groups. George Richards got it right, the guy got screwed. Cohen and Martin told him they would do what it took to win. They would spend money, they would make the big moves. What happened? They were in a playoff spot at the deadline and JM refuses to trade Jay Bo, who had already asked to be traded, when his value is high to bring in some guys who could score (seriously, we missed out on Carter and Giroux from the Flyers because JM couldn’t get JVR too?). Then Cohen and Martin both bail on him and leave him to the new owners/GMs. The guy has his faults, but he’ll do better with a more organized and functional organization. It’s time for a change, both for him and the team.

…and I haven’t even looked at man-games lost to injury. Guy had everything against him.

Talloncat has a tall task ahead finding a better coach than DeBeor, but fear not—Talloncat will prevail

I really hope it’s true and not just an unfounded rumor. I’m saving for a new jersey next season, preferably a red one.
Don’t know the timing yet but it is happening.

Let’s just say there’s a reason the old logo is back on the Panthers website.

I’d watch what you wish for however. Yormark would have control over the new designs.
Florida Panthers. Good Hockey, Great Advertising!
There's good news all around in this
My gut reaction is “Poor Pete wasn’t given a chance” but considering how well he did with what little he was given, he will not be unemployed for long. Also it’s pretty obvious he and Tallon have differences in opinion on who should be on the ice. I wish him all the best unless his new job is in the Eastern conference. Then I wish him all the second-best.
Hulton’s firing? Probably about 41 games late. Maybe he can go coach the PP for Tampa or Carolina?
Murphy’s non-firing? SMART. I have a little more faith in Tallon now. If there has been a bright spot this season, it’s the D. Even with the losses on the blue line at trade day, the D looks solid most nights and will only look better next season. Keeping Murphy over it is a good thing.

he’s not coaching for any other team though.

While he might be the perfect coach for us, he’s retiring from coaching so unfortunately we’re still job-hunting. Would be nice if Tallon decided on the new coaching job within the next few weeks. Anybody think that Chuck Weber, the Rochester coach that Tallon hired, is in the running?
- Go Panthers -
Guy’s got a lot of (non-NHL) pro experience; I’d say he gets the obligatory meeting, but guessing the idea is to hire someone with at least a few years in the Bigs. This is probably not the best time for experimentation.

With the style and framework of players Tallon and Santos are signing or looking to bring in, I anticipate a coach who has experience coaching a heavy forechecking, fast transition style of hockey, and I would assume it would be someone with NHL-level experience.
In all reality, DeBoer’s system wasn’t far from this, and he simply didn’t have the tools here to create that style of play. It remains to be seen though. It sure is shaping up to be a very news-filled summer for the Cats.
The talent level should be markedly higher across the board in 2010-11

This is completely off-topic
…but ESPN stopped providing text message score and news updates to Sprint customers (which is why I didn’t find out DeBoer was canned until this morning), does anybody here know of a good service for text message updates?
GREAT question. I’ll look into that.
