2011 NHL Draft Lottery / Drawing - Live Open Thread
Hard to believe it was only a year ago we sat on the edge of our collective lounger awaiting Bill Daly's dramatic pronouncement that the Florida Panthers had indeed retained the third overall selection in 2010's Entry Draft.
Seeing as we're so easily entertained, let's go another round (ooooh, sorry) this evening as the National Hockey League presents for our amusement the - unsponsored! - 2011 Draft Drawing.
"Wasn't it the Draft Lottery?" you may understandably ask. Well yes it was, until very recently, best we can tell. A theory travelling the interwebs says the league grew uncomfortable with the potentially negative connotation of the word "lottery" (read: gambling), hence employment of the presumably less-explosive "Drawing". If true, it's an impressive moral tone to uphold in an ever-changing world chock full of societal ills.
(On an unrelated note completely lacking in juicy irony, the NHL Awards will again be held here in June.)
Anyway, our pal Joe breaks down the details/rules for tonight's gig; essentially the Panthers - with a 28th-place finish - have a 14.2% chance of snagging the first-overall pick.
Where to watch (8pm): Versus, TSN, NHL.com. Can't wait? Sim it.

Does anyone know if this is being streamed? My ridiculous sat. TV provider stole Versus from under my nose last summer and I have yet to get it back

Can’t argue the Avs need young guns on D badly…none of the current boys in their system are projected for top-2 duty; they can correct that this year.

They have a good defensive core with Whitney (who was injured all year), Smid, Glibert, Peckham and then with guys like Marincin and Petry on the way up— I think they’re bigger hole is upfront at center— as good as HOPE is (and even add in Hartikanen who I’m a big fan of) they need a frontline center for that lot.

the blueprint is the dumbest thing and I think its more for media purposes than the actual plan— a team shouldn’t restrict itself from picking good players— size isn’t important anymore. Look at the Sabres— all their great young players are tiny.

Definitely not getting Neugent-Hopkins.
I would be pleased with Landeskog or Couturier. Not sold on Huberdeau.
edmonton doesnt need forwards they need d guys and avs have too many centers so cats still have a chance at RNH
pretty sure if you are drafting someone with Gretzky comparisons then you can make room for him on your roster.

They have one of the best young defensive cores in the league, but they don’t have a definite first line center prospect.
There defense consists of Whitney (who was injured for most of the year), Gilbert, Smid, Peckham, Teubert, Marincin, Plante, Petry etc, that’s a great core.
by Craig Fischer on Apr 12, 2011 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions
The Panthers were lucky that they didn’t get bumped down. Still bummed they didn’t win.
I don’t care who they draft so long as they draft scoring, scoring, and more scoring.

I don’t think it’s worth it unless you’re in love with a player, I know there’s a lot of hype with some of these players, but I really don’t see a big disparity if any between a large handful of these topend players in the draft.

Until three days ago, any of the “top five” were interchangeable, depending on needs. I wouldn’t make a deal unless it’s an insane offer from the other club, obviously
