2010 second-round pick Alex Petrovic signs with Panthers
Tallon, Inc continues moving forward in signing recent draftees, as Red Deer Rebels defenseman Alexander Petrovic, the 36th overall selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, went official today with a three-year entry level contract.
The 6'-4", 194lb Edmonton native is coming off a splendid fourth WHL season, notching career highs in assists, points, penalty minutes, and plus/minus.

Don’t be so certain, with an AHL affiliation up in the air there’s no telling how all of this pans out.

I dont think so. I think Gudbranson and Petrovic will be battling for a spot when someone gets injured.

Nope, dont think so. Wilson will probably stay especially if Panthers find an AHL team for next season.
At this point, the Panthers could just sign one veteran (expensive 5 mil+) dman to a long term deal, and let the kids play next to him. In two years, Panthers will have without a doubt the scariest defensive lineup in the NHL.
Why do I have the feeling that Gudbranson is going to be the last to sign?
Tallon has stated several times the club’s desire to sign a big, puck-moving, veteran d-man; someone I’m guessing is a click or two above McCabe or Wideman (who could honestly be described as tier 2 blueliners).

For the hell of it...
Here’s our defensemen the next few years:
Keaton Ellerby 6’4"/210 lbs
Eric Gudbrandson 6’4"/195 lbs
Alex Petrovic 6’4"/195 lbs
Jason Garrison 6’2"/215 lbs
Dmitry Kulikov 6’1"/200 lbs
Those are some good sized kids (especially as Guds and Petrovic put on some NHL weight) and all of they will be here for most likely all of the next five years.
Don’t forget Colby Robak, all 6’3 of him

I left him and Comrie out, as well as Weaver, Callahan and Clay Wilson. Just saying there are some big boys with long reaches that are going to be tough to skate around. There’s reason to think that our defense is going to be the envy of the league, even if a couple of these guys don’t turn out or are traded.
WEAVER!

Yea, I would hope Weaver starts, I can’t see him not starting.
My guess is:
Weaver – Garrison
Ellerby – Kulikov
Gudbranson – Wilson
Sprinkle in Petrovic and maybe another depth signing. The key here is not to rush the young guys, and keep Ellerby, Wilson and Gudbranson on a short leash if they start to waver. Hopefully this season helped Ellerby realize the amount of attention he has to put in during the season to keep himself in the bigs long-term. There were times where he was playing very confident and was a huge boost on the blueline for Florida, and there were games where his confidence was low and he was a liability.
I thought Wilson looked fantastic down the strech for the Cats on both ends of the ice and he should definitely be given a chance to earn a starting role next season. And I feel Gudbranson is completely ready for the NHL.
Also...
I’m calling it now: Petrovic ends up being the second-best signing out of this draft year, with the best being Quinton Howden.
I think that garrison and weaver might be the odd men out. Panthers need a big solid vetteran defenseman that can lead the kids. The obvious choice is to trade one of the them for more picks in the draft or trade with a team can afford to lose due to their depth on the blue line.

No way, they both play well together, are NHL proven and are relatively cheap (I suspect both will get extensions this summer) by comparison. You don’t trade these guys – though I think we need to bring in another veteran d-man this season as well, if for nothing else but leadership.
Yes, but I still think another blue liner might be an upgrade. What if a Seabrook or Keith type is up for grabs? Isnt that an upgrade over Weaver or Garrison. I just think that one of those guys despite excellent play, might be the odd man out.
our defense is looking very formidable.....
now let’s find some players that can score 20-30 goals a season.
Yep, this team is two scoring lines away from a playoff spot.
What’s going to affect the roster the most yet is who the coach will be.
Word on the street – and that’s all I can say – is Tallon has asked ATL for permission to speak with assistant coach John Torchetti, makes makes a lot of sense. Again, unconfirmed.

Dear John ...
… you want to give the Florida Panthers a second try? We didn’t mean to fire you back in 2004 – which is to say the clowns that fired you aren’t here anymore.
