Rochester prez Staats: Former FLA GM Martin "good for the Amerks"
From the D&C's KevinO:
"Jacques Martin agreed that player development is enhanced in a winning environment," Staats said. "I firmly believe that if Jacques Martin had not left Florida (...) we would probably have been talking about renegotiating (with the Panthers).
"We had the same philosophy. Jacques Martin’s approach to the partnership in Rochester was a much different approach than the approach of his successors (Tallon and his assistant, Mike Santos)."
Way to keep it classy until after the divorce has been finalized.

Yo what's with these people?
Why is everyone talking crap about the Panthers?

Personally, I agree and disagree with the Amerks. Yes, they should get some input, but where can they complain? They had some of the Panthers better prospects in Markstrom, Ellerby, Repik, Dadonov, and had Garth Snow not been cherry-picking, they’d have gotten Grabner too. Guys getting called up is part of the game and the Panthers lost a lot of games to injury this year.
Now, by saying this the Amerks managers look like complainers and I think it only makes things worse for them. If you were an NHL team – would you want to deal with Ted Nolan and this? Why break an affiliation agreement to deal with them?
Ohhh, the amerks did great under j’m Martin huh? Weren’t they last place? Last time I checked j’m Martin ran the panthers into the ground more so if that is even possible…he was and is a horrible gm

"they"
Gotta get in their last chance to bash on the Panthers organization while they can. We won’t be available for it starting November 2011..
COOP
The CAP Floor might be harder to reach than I thought...
So was crunching numbers for fun last night and this is a scary thought… Turns out that it may not be so easy to just hit the floor and (I hate saying this) Yomark may not have been too far off on being excited to spend to the floor… (End all positive things about Yomark)
Look at it this way:
Players on the Roster at Season End that are under contract:
(F) Booth, Weiss, Olesz, Dadonov
(D) Kulikov, Weaver, Garrison
(G) Clemmenson
Combined Cap Hit: $15,025,000
Assuming that the Cap goes up to around $60,000,000, the floor HAS to be 16million below, so $44 Million. Which leaves $29,000,000 to spend, roughly.
The following Players I would like to keep (Last Years Hit & Possible Rough 2011 Cap Hit):
Skille – 600,000 – $900,000
Santorelli – 600,000 – $1,200,000
Carter – 625,000 – $725,000
Samsonov – 2,533,333 – $2,000,000 (At most)
Bergfors – 900,000 – $1,100,000 (At most?)
Reasoner – 1,100,000 – $1,800,000
Repik – 800,000 – $850,000
Matthias – 825,000 – $900,000
Sulzer – 650,000 – $675,000
Ellerby – 875,000 – $1,100,000 (?)
Total from 10-11: $10,475,000 Rough 2011 Cap Hit: $12,150,000
Keep in mind these PROJECTED numbers are just guesses, the point of them is to get an idea. Everyone will have different ideas of how much to pay them, but I can’t see anyone being too far off these numbers.
So assuming those numbers the team has spent $27,175,000, and needs to still spend $16,825,000 on a couple skaters and a goalie… Problem is the available Free Agents are not the strongest and wont warrant that kind fo money… So obviously trading for big contracts will be the answer, and we shoudl get some quality that way.
Anyhow, just for conversation not a bad situation.

great breakdown
I think you’ve hit something. The good news is that the Panthers are now in a position to get “overpaid” talent cheaply from other organizations. If someone wants to get out from under a contract, they could get a pick or prospect form Florida and spin it to their own fans as “clearing cap space”.
The problem is for Tallon to cheaply get players worth having that won’t spoil the locker room. But who and how much? I’m thinking he’d look to Chicago based on familiarity and also the habitual big spenders like NYR/PHI.
A lot of players will get considerable raises so it won’t be that large—add in the low salaries, high cap hits of some of the first rounders this team will sign or have allready signed(if Gudbranson follows previous top 3 picks he’ll likely have a 3mil+ hit because of bonuses) there won’t be a lot left over.
I really think you’re underselling a lot of the agents for these players—when you look at a lot of recent signings I think you’ve lowballed a lot of players in your estimation—it’ll be even worse if some of the RFA’s like Santorelli goto arbitration).

Hard to say, like I said basically a rough idea
I did forget Gudbranson though, even though the $12,500,000 actualyl did include him. Entry level contracts only count as $900,000 the first year if they sign for the full amount. So he actually still only occupies that much.
Hard to see Santorelli getting more than $2,000,000 though… I could be wrong.
Looking at the past few years though, Skille actually went from $875 to $600 last year for example. So I am just assuming that negotiations could be similiar to that. Alot of kids comign off entry level contracts dropped in value.
And also, lets assume that whoever we grab in the draft makes the team. He too will count as $900,000 against the cap.
by saskpantherfan on Apr 19, 2011 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions
I see Santorelli getting 1.2 tops… If they pay him 2mil, they should let him walk. if they are getting a top pick in the draft, that person can take Santorelli spot.
I am really hoping the Panther go after some good character guys such as Brooks Laich in free agency. Would like to see them make an offer on Philly’s Leino too.
Honestly, I would not be surpised if Tallon tries to get rid of most of the panthers previous draft picka through trades. Considering what a disaster the 2006 draft was….I worry about the the rest, and Tallon should worry too.
I’ll take big issues with your money (my adjustments):
Skille – 600,000 – $900,000 (try $1.25m)
Santorelli – 600,000 – $1,200,000 ($2.0m)
Carter – 625,000 – $725,000 ($.75m)
Samsonov – 2,533,333 – $2,000,000 (At most)($2.5m)
Bergfors – 900,000 – $1,100,000 (At most?)($1.75m)
Reasoner – 1,100,000 – $1,800,000($2m)
Repik – 800,000 – $850,000 (released or I agree)
Matthias – 825,000 – $900,000 ($1m)
Sulzer – 650,000 – $675,000 (released)
Ellerby – 875,000 – $1,100,000 ($1.5 million)
So…$15 million, plus the $13.6 here is for rounding sake, $29 mil. I think we’re going to resign Vokoun and give him a 2yr, $8 mil deal – so that’s $33. We still have Reinprecht on the books for $2.5 million, so that’s $36. Now, we’ve got $8 million to the floor, not including any contributions from Howden, Gudbrandson, this years pick or any extension to Weaver or Garrison, which I think is likely. I’d say the number that Tallon is playing with is closer to the $6-$8 million number, not that $16 million.
That is why I posted the numbers. Just to get other opinionson on what the players should be offered. The player I am most unsure of is Bergfors. He didnt do anything much to end the season, so I am curious what Tallon might offer him…

One name that jumps at me
would be Carter in Philadelphia.
Also SJ, NJ, NYR, BOS, MIN are mentioned as teams too clsoe to the cap.
Even taking on someone like Gaborik or Havlat and making a deal where one of them comes with a pick/Prospect for Repik/Matthias and a pick.
Wasn’t till I was looking at numbers that I started to really find this exciting. It is hilarious but was telling my wife that I just cannot spend the $44 million properly… In the end to get to the floor in my little experiment, I traded Repik and a pick to the Flyers for Carter, signed Jovanovski and traded for Ray Whitney. Left at least $2,000,000 to go to a goalie.
Think about the fact that Zach Parise is a restricted free agent on July 1st. That could make things still more interesting.
Parise ain’t goin’ nowhere. New Jersey gets like $19 million in bloated salaries off the books this summer. I think they can afford him.
Sure, but I’d pick one that might happen. I’d set my focus on Ville Leino – because we’re going to get a center in the draft.
Would love to land Leino. Think he would be a great fit!

I'd love to be proven otherwise...
but I don’t think anyone pries Carter out of Philly without a king’s ransom. He’s almost a 40-goal scorer and might actually be earning his salary. I think he’s one of the players that Philly wants to keep. Danny Briere, on the other hand, has a reputation of being fragile (or is that Gagne? I get ’em confused) yet gets similar money.
At this point, I would not be surprised to see Repik and Ellerby sent packing for picks. I like Ellerby but if he could be traded for a top NHL center…….
Can’t see Tallon trading Ellerby now. Has a pretty godo pairing with Kulikov.

The idea has crossed my mind
Only thing is that if we were to make a move for him, I would think it would have to be via trade. I cannot see Tallon giving up 5 first round picks.
Maybe Tallon can pry Parise away, but it’s a big maybe. Truthfully it’s a pipe dream more than anything else. I would love to see Parise in a Panthers sweater, especially considering we have so much money to spend, but it likely won’t happen.
Agreed. I think Parise is VERY much a pipedream. Would be a shocker if we landed him. I wouldnt sign a RFA and lose the picks. Would have to be a trade.

ATL has given Tallon permission to talk to John Torchetti...
reported this morning on Sportnet here in Canada that the Thrashers have given Tallon permission to interview John Torchetti… There is a name from the past….

Which has grown mightily in stature since the Bad Old Days. A very reasonable choice.

Agreed. I like the move. I honestly had hoped they would have removed the interim tag back when he was the coach. He did a great job, but the appeal of getting Martin forced him out. I remember thinking we finally had a good pairing in Dudley and Torch back then.
So if in the end he is the new coach, I would be happy with the choice.
