Panthers' newbies all over the map on stats sheet

SUNRISE, FL: Jack Skille #15 of the Florida Panthers scores a goal past Brent Johnson of the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 2, 2011. The goal was Skille's first as a Panther. (Photo by Joel Auerbach/Getty Images)

A peek into how the "larger" pieces involved in transactions made by the Florida Panthers around the 2011 NHL Trade Deadline have fared since their acquisition, with three games remaining in the schedule:

  • RW Niclas Bergfors (trade with Atlanta, RFA in July):  17 gp  1g-6a  +2  2pim  8hits  48sog
  • C Ryan Carter (trade with Carolina, UFA):  11 gp  2g-1a  +3  20pim  37hits  13sog
  • LW Patrick Rissmiller (trade with Atlanta, UFA):  7 gp  0p  -1  0pim  13hits  8sog
  • LW Sergei Samsonov (trade with Carolina, UFA):  17 gp  3g-9a  -2  2pim  8hits  33sog
  • RW Jack Skille (trade with Chicago, RFA):  10 gp  1g-1a  -12  4pim  31hits  23sog
  • D Alex Sulzer (trade with Nashville, UFA):  9 gp  0g-1a  -3  0pim  9hits  14bks  7sog

Some notes: Skille and Sulzer have missed considerable time due to injuries. With the exception of Samsonov ($2.53M), all of the players listed make $1M or (in most cases considerably) less. Samsonov is also the only player to collect points in more than two straight games (3, March 15-19; 1g-5a). After Skille's 10-hit FLA debut, he has not come close to replicating the feat: a 5-hit effort is his next best single-game performance; for all the bluster about his physicality, Carter's making folks think twice. Bergfors had a 6-shot night on March 29th. Sulzer's +/- looks much better considering he's been very steady, with only two games earning him the -3. Carter's career: an -even- rating over 181 NHL games.

Something to chew on as Spending Season approaches. All salary numbers per CapGeek, and worth a look.

Am I the only one thinking Bergfors isnt going to be here next year? Dont get me wrong, I would love to see what he can do with linemates not named Darcy

He’s an RFA, if they want him they could keep him. I don’t see any outrageous offer sheets being tossed around for him.

I think there are going to be surprises we’re not even thinking of. We can’t just fill the roster in with these guys – we just can’t spend enough money otherwise. To me, Skille isn’t going anywhere – if only because he’s a Tallon draft pick. I would think Bergfors would get a season to prove himself too – but we’re starting to run out of positions. You’ve got to think there’s 6 forward spots up for next year with two young defenseman and one goalie. And $30 million that has to be spent – that’s nine guys and $30 million – or the equivalent of paying everyone they sign the equivalent of Stephen Weiss. That’s frightening.

Which they won’t be. Hopefully they’ll make the right UFA choices and spend wisely there as well.

Oh I hope they spend wisely too, but the fact remains they must reach the salary cap floor – and I just don’t see how they can do that and simply resign guys to RFA deals. They’re not going to give Skille or Bergfors a contract much more than Reasoner or Dvorak made this year. Someone’s going to make some bank – and the only guy on the roster who deserves it is Weiss.

i think Tallon's going to be a salary dump

I’m sure there are “overpaid” players on other teams that can be had for a song due to the weight of their contracts. If Tallon needs to spend to the floor, he could always go that route. Can’t think of any examples right now (I’m taking a break from hockey for a bit), but I’m sure they’re out there.

Chris Drury is a good example.

I agree, Skille is here to stay

I was really surprised to see Shore there, higher than Bjugstad no doubt— not because he doesn’t deserve it, I just didn’t think he’d get the credit. I’d put a little bit higher but I don’t have a good handle on some of these prospects to know for sure.

I was very surprised to see Gudbranson go up a spot, but they said he had a great WJHC, so I’ll take that ranking with a grain of salt.

Markstrom fell considerably from 2 to 11, and it’s no shocker— but besides that, I was really pleased with the way things shook up for the Cats on HF— I thought that Howden might make it but oh well.

I’m really scratching my head with the top 10— Tarasenko, OEL, Schenn, maybe Kouznetsov/Orlov? I wonder if Reimer will qualify, Granlund, Johansen, Connolly, Niederreiter. There’s certainly going to be 1-2 surprise picks and I bet that Schenn ends up getting number 1.

Glad to know I’m not the only fan of Ryan. ;) Seriously the guy works his socks off to get right impression and contract for next year.

Spazm you are not alone, I want him to make the team next season. I’m bummed that I won’t make the last game (I’m matchmaking the fights for a charity event this weekend www.fleoachapert14.org) to bid on his jersey. If I won the Jersey at least I would be certain to get it autographed for 2011-2012 season :-) Unlike the autograph stalker video on LBC, seems I am never in the right place for that!

I was impressed by Carter immensely in the two games I saw
Best thing I saw was during the Pittsburgh game when he dived to keep the puck in play during a dump in, an otherwise harmless unsubstantial play but since he sacrificed himself to keep the puck in the zone it created a really good scoring chance.
I never see players do that.
