Update on Panthers in 2011 Worlds

The Florida Panthers have three players in the 2011 IIHF World Championship. Jack Skille and Clay Wilson with the Americans, and Dmitry Kulikov with Team Russia. The United States went 2-1-0 in the preliminary round, losing only to Sweden, with the kids from Moscow going 2-1-0 as well, losing 2-0 to Germany. Both teams advanced to the playoff round, with the Americans getting shutout in the quarterfinals to the Czech Republic 4-0. The Russians were shutout by Finland, 3-0 in the semifinals, but still advanced to the bronze medal game, where they lost 7-4 to the Czech Republic. At least the Russians eliminated the Canadians in the quarterfinals, 2-1.

You’ve got to be encouraged to see Wilson continue to perform when given opportunities. I’m very interested to see how he does in camp.

Does anyone think Skille’s performance hurt his stock? I don’t know if it was because it was an international game or what, but I just wasn’t drinking the kool-aid and while I understand there were some holdouts, I can’t help but wonder how they would have faired with less e and more skill. Which is the same question I have with the Cats.

All in all I think it was a tournament to forget for our reps—they got some international experience which is wonderful, and Kulikov showed he could battle a bit through internal adversity, but really it wasn’t a lot to write home about especially when you consider the holdouts.
