Thursday Caterwaul: pre-Draft musings, rumorblog, whatever
Open forum goodness: the NHL pre-season (at least) schedule should be released to day around 2ish, last night's awards show was everything most expected it to be, and the league is converging in Minnesota for what is very likely to be TallonFest 2011. Talk it up here.

Although I may not be able to watch the draft, I would hope to hear “We have a trade” immediately after Bettman congratulates the Bruins.
We’ll have a live thread ready to go, so check in often to see what’s going on.
I expect we’ll hear that phrase uttered many times on Friday and Saturday.
I’m expecting it TODAY.

The entire thing was just B-list all the way, except for Jon Hamm, who is a legitimate star now (and a damn good actor; watch “Mad Men” if you haven’t already).
I agree with some other commentary on the net in that Hamm should just host it. He’s got more charisma in his pinky than Jay Mohr has in his entire body.
Kevin Smith isn’t B-list! Well not in my opinion atleast. Dudes been one of my fav directors/writers for a long time.. Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, jay and bob strike back, practically rewrote good will hunting for ben and matt when they brought it to him.. directed tracy morgan and bruce willis in cop out. as well as rewrote some of the script in the newest die hard movie and had a small part as the comp nerd hacker dude.

Too early to tell. The only guess I would have is that Tallon moves his rights during the draft for a 3rd or 4th rounder or something like that.
This draft is a very interesting one for Florida. They have the most cap room of any team in the NHL, so they have the ability to do other teams a favor by acquiring bad contracts, and in exchange pick up some extra prospects or draft picks. Tallon has immense freedom at this draft to do what he sees best. It’s going to be a bit of a rollercoaster I think. Can’t wait!
Truthfully, I hope it stays at that. I really dont want to end up trading away any more assets than we’ve already parted ways with at the trade deadline
But yes, super excited to see who we pick and the jersey unveiling
by Chris S Roberts on Jun 23, 2011 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions
I would think moving Vokoun’s rights would merit more than a pick. Maybe a pick and a high priced contract.
That only happens if someone signs Vokoun as part of the trade. No one is going to give up anything more than a draft pick for rights unless it’s someone else’s rights, ala Bouwmeester.
If Edmonton was of the belief, that they are ready to compete for a playoff spot with a serious netminder backstopping them, they could trade Souray and a pick to open up cap space, while signing Vokoun. Rare scenario with a highly unlikely chance of it happening.

Unfortunately, my first choice would have been Stamkos, that would have been a huge coup for Tallon. However, it seems like he’ll be signed, plus, he’s the face of NHL 12, and how would that look having a cover person end up playing for another team? (note sarcasm [Farve])
Not to mention the 4 first-rounders he’d have to surrender.

He did. He led in with certain players retiring, and then said the entire Florida Panthers team retired this past season.
I don’t know whether to be annoyed that we’re the subject of jokes or pleased that we were at least present at the show, even in joke form.

If you got annoyed at this franchise being the subject of jokes in the hockey world, you would’ve switched teams by now :)
Excellent point. It’ll be all the more sweeter when we become a force in the league.

Are you Scottish per chance? Maybe a Highlander? Cause you might need to live forever, if the Panthers lack of patience continues to not last more than two years. Tallon is only half way through Dudley’s tenure, before being shown the door.

Btw.. I hear theres talk that we could trade #3 and a 3rd or 4th rounder along with ellerby for #1.. Since I’ve never been a huge Ellerby fan nor am I fully sold on his future in the NHL or with our team (only signing him to a one yr deal) I wouldnt hate if this happened, gives edm a defenseman they need as well as chance to still get larsson and gives us RNH who will if developed properly will im sure be a franchise player

I have been really thinking about the possibility of Weiss being dealt this offseason. There’s more of a chance it happens this year than any other year so far. I’m in the camp that would prefer to see him kept, as he’s one of the best two-way centers in the league for the price.
I think Dineed will slap him with the “C” he deserves, kid will probably stick as a panther for awhile

by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 2:04 AM EDT up reply actions
Maybe, maybe not. As great a player as Weiss is, he’s also closely associated to the losing culture that has been here during his entire NHL career. That can be a dangerous thing, even if it isn’t his fault at all.
He’s also stuck with it and improved just about every season he’s been here, as well as now being the longest tenured player on the team, he’s definately leadership material we need to have for prospects or even newly signed guys coming in.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 23, 2011 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions
My honest opinion is that Tallon gets the man he wants in the draft..
And should he not and RNH or landeskog are taken 1 and 2 I see him taking larsson and having him pair with guds in the future. Making room to trade one of our other defensive prospects as well as a pick possibly to get another late first rounder.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 23, 2011 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Even if Larsson is there at 3, I don’t see the Panthers taking him. They know they need any type of offense they can get. If they stay at 3, and RNH and Landeskog go 1 & 2, then Huberdeau (sp?) is going 3
Larsson is honestly too good to pass up, the only way we dont pick him if he’s left is if we know nj really likes him, then u acquire a pick from them to leave him on the board and take huber..

So was Horton and Campbell though—there’s so much turnover and change that I don’t think it matters, it’s basically an entirely new team side from a few executive positions.
by Craig Fischer on Jun 23, 2011 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions
HOrton wanted out. It wasn’t the franchise looking to deal him. Campbell was a sign to Deboer, his time may just be up if the team didn’t perform.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions
Whoa thats a little much
I remember to move from 3rd to first the Pens payed us Samuelsson and 3rd for 1st pick. I would think if Edmonton was going to move it, the price sure would not be Weiss AND the 3rd. Unless Tallon is looking at Weiss for the 1st, but not moving the 3rd pick…
My guess, Repik and 3rd pick for 1st and 4th pick maybe….
or preferrably: 1st, Souray/Horcoff for 3rd, Repik and 3rd rnd pick.
Being that I was in Edmotnon for a few years, I think Repik would be a nice fit there if we had to move someone to get the Oilers pick.

PLUS
I still would prefer they not trade up and get either Landeskog or Huberdeau…
by saskpantherfan on Jun 23, 2011 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m completely sold on RNH, and if they can’t get him it’s landeskog for me.. if neither are available then its best available person left, which would be larsson.. like i said, use a defensive prospect as trade bait with a pick for a later first round pick and we’d be talk of the draft yet again..
plus we’d be set on the back end much like chicago was, seabrooke and kieth are beasts.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 23, 2011 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Any trade featuring Horcroff’s contract for the length it is, is not preferable. Its a deal break imo. Souray, he can be sent to the minors for a year and use his cap number to eat space for a season. But four years of Horcoff’s disgustingly insane number kills any deal. Edmonton would have to offer me both First rounders this year, any and all second rounders they posess this year, and any and all first and second rounders they aqcuire for next year’s draft as well, to make me take on that contract.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 2:10 AM EDT up reply actions
Another thought, if Tallon does trade up for No.1, gotta think he’ll ship out a defensive prospect/roster player instead of a forward—no sense in him taking two steps forwards and one step back by siphoning off offensive talent.

Another small rumor and more likely one....
Flyers move Versteeg and Carle to Florida for mid range prospect and pick(s)
I don’t see Carle being included.. but versteeg and a 4th rounder since i dont believe fl has one with the nashville trade to florida for some prospect plus a later round pick could happen

thats a damn good deal for PHI. Got rid of the needed cap (some of it) and got 8th pick as well as a good, cheap forward
Voracek is a fantastic young player too—I think CBJ thought he was expendable what with Calvert making some strides, but I actually could see Voracek outshining Carter as early as next season.

by panthersfan27 on Jun 23, 2011 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions
SON A (&( &*&^&^%. GOD *#$%@!. I really wanted Carter… not for that much because that’s like trading Booth or Weiss along with our third overall… and maybe a late round pick… for a bloated contract. But UGH he’s so good I wanted him to be a Cat.
If his production drops off in CBJ just imagine what it would have done here. Just saying
by Chris S Roberts on Jun 23, 2011 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions
And then there’s also the fact that getting rid of that contract takes away Versteeg/Carle from becoming panthers either… and even if we do get one of them… They’re not going to just hand them over as easily anymore. They’ll want a greater return since they’ve taken so much cap off already with that trade…
ALSO
Not only did they just shed Carter and steal that trade… but they only took on a $1.something million contract in the whole trade.

I didn’t even think of that… what’s the cap situation looking like after that Richards trade? How much more did they just shed?
they just freed up about 10million between carter and richards.. say they resign bryz for 5 a season.. and leino for about 2.. that gives them about 4mil left to play with B richards..
Get rid of Versteeg and you have roughly 7mil to play with.. I’d say B richards would sign to a contender for roughly that much.. now imagine B richards, Giroux and Schenn down the middle… ouch
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 23, 2011 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions
Bryz will cost at least 6 mil unless Holmgren does some kind of brainwashing. And getting Brad Richards would be great, but as sought-after as he is during the FA period on July 1, they will be overpaying for him compared to Mike Richards’ contract.
Brad in my opinion is better than mike, and he wants to play for a ready made contender which philly def is, with or without mike.

That’s a sick 1, 2 punch at center… and they picked up so good already solid NHL wingers in the process… plus some good draft picks. Hell, they could get an NHL ready player with that 8th overall tomorrow night.

Ok so the rundown is this...
Philly now acquires some picks, something they didn’t have before. Their first pick wasnt going to be until 86 overall… they now have #8 and 68 as well as the second round pick they got from LA..
They acquire a decent young depth player in simmonds as well as possibly the top prospect in the NHL in Schenn.. Solid 2-3rd liner in Voracek and freed up cap space to sign bryz.. they now have a little room to resign Leino as well as having to resign simmonds who would probably only make 800k or so..
They fixed themselves up nicely with good young talent as well as picks to stock up their prospect pool. I still expect some other form of trade to free a little cap room, the versteeg talks could still be in the works.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 23, 2011 4:57 PM EDT reply actions

by Chris S Roberts on Jun 23, 2011 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions
