Out to destroy Twitter, Flyers trade Carter & Richards in separate pre-draft deals
Philadelphia GM Paul Holmgren - not a man known for conservative approaches at roster fixes - cemented his legacy in Flyers history this afternoon by trading both of his club's co-captains:
- C Jeff Carter to the Columbus Blue Jackets for W Jakub Voracek and 1st (8th overall) and third round picks, via The Cannon
- C Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings for uber-prospect F Brayden Schenn, W Wayne Simmonds, and a second round pick, via Battle of California
The explosion you recently heard outside the window was that of an Eastern fanbase in anarchy.

Was actually working on a FanPost for this, but I’ll just say it here: this is a great day for Panther fans after seeing the man who destroyed our 2009-10 season hopes get traded away. Also, may I add that TSN is reporting that Bryzgolav just signed for 9 years, $51 Million dollars with the Flyers. I’m now guessing that riots are emerging from Philidelphia. All of a sudden, the LA Kings have become contenders.

Wow. Just wow (although it’s hard for me to go so far to say that Mike Richards destroyed our 2009-2010 season… and honestly after that 1st game after the hit against Philly where he did the “honorable” thing and dropped his gloves, I’d pretty much forgotten about it.. did it make the final couple months suck more? Sure… but I don’t think we were a David Booth away from a playoff run or something…we finished an all too familiar now 14th)
But back on topic. If that 9 years thing is true… I’m just speechless. I know Philly’s been dying for that #1 goaltender for a few years now, but to give up Richards and Carter to clear space for Bryzgalov? For a team that’s been so close? I don’t know about this one… it will be fun to listen to everyone react to tomorrow night though, that’s for sure.
The whole team sucked in general that year, but Booth going out with a concussion made the year worse than it could’ve been. TSN is reporting it and a whole bunch of sources are reporting it now. They have a good goaltender in Boberoski and they just threw their playoffs away unless they make more big moves.

Richards leaves the team he captained in shambles.
Well, not really.

I’m truly stunned by all of this. Almost too much to absorb.

I’ve got to agree. I understand having to let someone go to make room for Bryz, but this seems like a lot. I think them getting Schenn back was a huge coup, but giving up the guy that was the hear and soul of your team in Richards was a big mistake in my opinion. This reeks of Stu Barnesian badness for the Flyers.
I feel bad for LA.. via battleofcali
So basically, a giant asshole for our best prospect and my favorite player on the team.
Richards frees up defensive duties for Anze Kopitar and could open the door to a trade of Jarret Stoll.
I don’t know what the fuck.
On the plus side, my old roommate is a giant Flyers fan. He just sent me a text: “I am going to kill myself.”
I don’t think giving up Schenn was the right move.

I really don’t get why philly fans are so torn up.. they now have a younger more talented core, as well as the goalie theyve been lacking since hextall retired.. and they can now trade bob
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 23, 2011 5:26 PM EDT reply actions
Because they just traded away 22% of their scoring in an hour
by Chris S Roberts on Jun 23, 2011 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree except for trading Bobs. Philly got younger, more talented, and they were deep, DEEP down the middle to begin with. People are gonna talk about a bad contract with Bryzgalov, but they got rid of two bad contracts.

The way this is going
I wouldn’t be suprised if they do not sign Ville Lieno. Pardon if the spelling is off.
Might as well trade all of the scoring away.

Not a fan of Bob at all, to me this makes no sense

Philly has been known for crazy trades to move up, but that was with Bobby Clarke callin the shots.

Not seeing a lot of difference between Bobby C and Homer.

Holmer likes trading for guys with a season or two minimum of experience. Clarke liked to gamble on an unknown he had an uncanny feeling in his balls for. Like he wanted to trade the Carter and Richards picks in ’03 for Horton.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions
If only we had done that…of course, Horton would have probably scored 50 goals in Philly and both of them wouldn’t have progressed past Rochester.
We’d have drafted Bernier and Stewart, since Keenan heavily influenced those two picks, and yes, they’d be AHL regulars now, not that they are much that presently.

Just a thought, but…. I find it hysterical that the Flyers were being built up as one of the marquis teams this season, with the high profile match-up opening night, the Winter Classic day after New Year’s, and as soon as that’s all finalized, they go and trade two of their three most popular players for a bunch of talented unknowns except to diehards.
