So, if there is a basis in the trading up rumors, would it still happen mere minutes before?
This is my first live draft, sorry for the newbie questions.

Trade up would be announced from the podium in all likelihood.

In case you didnt see it, this presumably is the Panthers new jersey:

Daaamn!
I think it looks sick! It’s got the original jersey look to it with a twist. I’ll def be getting one in red!

Different then I imagined, but like it a lot
by HockeyKnight on Jun 24, 2011 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions
IN different lighting it has different strengths and weaknesses. Personally, I like it now, if not better in professional AP photos

From OFP
IF #FlaPanthers deal David Booth to #Oilers for top pick, hearing team gets back Sheldon Souray (and his big contract) among other stuff…don’t see it happening
I think Booth will return to his 30 goal mark
by Chris S Roberts on Jun 24, 2011 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions
More Info
Again, DO NOT think #FlaPanthers are trading David Booth to move up; still could move tho…no trade kicks in July 1 and he’s due 4 yrs @ $4.25 per
by panthersfan27 on Jun 24, 2011 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Booth is possibly the biggest fan favorite in the Panthers history; if Tallon trades him away, even though we would be getting the 1st overall pick back, the fans would be complaining wildly. If for some reason he does go, hopefully it would be in the case that WE would win the trade.

Biggest fan favorite? Not likely. There are a couple still getting more love from 96.

Howdy all. Chillin’ with CLG and Crooklyn! Panthers have 2 booths set up near us. Crowd getting bigger, Leon getting laaaarger.

Crooklyn is probably glad that one of our friends isn’t there; we told this annoying friend/acquaintance of ours that there wasn’t a draft party at the Ft. Lauderdale Duffy’s, haha.

“Cap-challenged teams have been talking to us but nothing’s come to fruition yet. There’s been a lot of pondering, a lot of positioning as far as what we might do, what we may trade or get back in return. . . . Things are starting to percolate.” -Tallon
The next hour could be interesting
That quote is from yesterday, by the way.
I don’t see how this team trades either of them for the simple fact of we need to get up to the cap floor if nothing else.

i think the only reason you hear a lot of Weiss or Booth rumors is that there are plenty of GMs out there who will happily throw a drowning team an anchor (credit to Bryan Murray for that analogy). I think Booth and Weiss are Panthers unless it’s a lopsided trade on Luongo proportions.
Hmm, is Keenan a GM somewhere?
Yeah, I simply cant see a trade Tallon would jump on that any intelligent GM would offer for Booth or Weiss

Bah.. just woke up from my nap and thought I missed it.
All I want to say until I get some caffine in me is.. I would not be upset if anyone from our team gets traded tonight, as long as it benefits our team and their name isn’t Weiss.

Can’t wait to see what the roster looks like 3 hours from now (or I guess more so after the weekend)
I think Edmonton stays at #1; I think booth gets traded tonight, and Weiss stays with FLA as captain
Booth gets traded for what? If its not #1 I seriously doubt he’ll get moved

Doubt it.. and if they are they need to flip him right away to edmonton to move up
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 24, 2011 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Thats exactly what we need on our blue line if hopkins and landeskog are taken!
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 24, 2011 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions
And I would’ve kept Grabner… easy to say now. I’ll hold out on the hope that Gudrbanson will be a longtime blueliner for Florida and hope whichever forward falls to us lights it up.
Looks better every new pic I see… still not wild about the little armpit stripey thing, but… I’ll probably end up getting one, lol
Booing Bettman is a national sport
Shame that they still do it. He needs to learn to just keep talking. Don’t let the boo-birds win.
That’s why the did not skin Gary Bettman in the NHL series. The crowd would automatically boo him and the devs wouldn’t be able to fix it…
by siddious on Jun 24, 2011 10:23 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
And there goes edmonton..
insuring they have the #1 pick next year as well.. all small forwards, and no defense.
Wonder if they can top their 3.17 GA avd per game from this past year?

Huberdeau! (from a completely unprofessional opinion that only watched YouTube vids of each lol)

From OFP
If #Avs take D Adam Larsson as some are suggesting, #FlaPanthers have very interesting decision with strong Fs left…could move pick to Philly or Ottawa
What should happen is.. Colorado Drafts Larsson #2 leaving Landeskog to us.. Tambelini then procedes to die in a fire
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 24, 2011 7:28 PM EDT reply actions
ooo, drama...
Smyth was NOT yet traded back to the Oil.
Full credit to the team trading him to use Calgary to play Edmonton.
colorado is all over their map on what they are doing…. good luck to them. trade anderston, trade their top pick this year. what are they doing over there….they needed a defenseman
Never a truer statement. As a Colorado native, I’m embarrassed of my home team. Long live the Panthers
by Chris S Roberts on Jun 24, 2011 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions
this now settles it… Edm and COL are two of the worst managed teams.. if you need defense you draft defense..
Now I say we take larsson and have the two studs on the back end, and insure that were picking in the top 3 with edm and colorady again next yr
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 24, 2011 7:32 PM EDT reply actions
Wait, so if you need defense, draft defense, but if you need offense, draft defense? Florida has the young guys coming up on the blueline after Kulikov + Gudbranson the last 2 years. Take Huberdeau or see what you can get for the pick.

I'm with you.
Tired of defense. I want offenss and the team needs a pivot. Huberdeau or Couturier? Don’t care. Just pick a forward.
Picking Larsson wouldn’t be such a bad deal, as long as they bring in Jovo to mentor all the kids, similar to Philly with Pronger.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Huberdeau is still available and is one of the premier talents in this draft. The Cats would do well to pick him up.
This is true, Landeskog was good but Huberdeau had that late push

Not a quote, but close, from Tallon:

Methinks Pierre McGuire might be getting the picks before they are announced… he’s had a “sneaking suspicion” about each pick, and somehow he’s been right. Lol, I know they get the picks before they are announced, but don’t play it off like you’re some sort of guru. “Hmmm, I have a feeling this might be a forward… I’d be surprised if it wasn’t Strome”… Just wait for it to be announced and go from there.

They have Briere and Giroux to play center next two or three years, plus a few other kids capable of occupying the role presently.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 8:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Briere played center in Philly before playing RW and he played center in Buffalo for years.

Honestly, I don’t believe in hating the kid for something he hasn’t done yet (re: wanting to leave Florida for Montreal). I commented on an earlier article on this site that in one of Huberdeau’s draft profile videos on NHL.com he’s shown in a photo as a kid wearing an uncrested Panthers jersey.
I think the fact that he has a connection to this area is a good thing. As long as we win and incentivize him to stay, we will enjoy the benefits of his skill for years to come.
Yeah, no need in hating your own players before they even hit the ice. Lets see what he does in the organization

posted this a couple times now.. he’s pretty good offensively, not as physical when it comes to contact but will still get in the corners to fight for pucks.. my personal fav was the 2:20 mark when he goes in against 4 defenders loses the puck fights to get it back and sends a feed to Macfarland for the goal.. would be good to keep those two together

yes he is.. but he’s still damn good
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 24, 2011 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions
Campbell doesnt have the shot on the blueline as most offensive def are.. but he racks up the points in assists.. he’s physical and can really help our young blueliners
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 24, 2011 10:39 PM EDT reply actions
Tallon is officially an idiot. He doesn’t just sign Campbell to an idiotic contract once. He later goes out an acquires him with same said contract a second time. Unbelievably stupid.
If Olesz is on his way out too, then that mitigates a good portion of the contract methinks.
by panthersfan27 on Jun 24, 2011 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions
I know, right? An experienced, cup winning defenseman added to what would have been an unbelieveably young blueline. Enough money in one contract that’s at least a quality player that we don’t have to reach to get to the cap floor, and he unloaded a contract equally, if not worse contract for a horribly underperforming player. What a moron.
A possible HELL YES to you my good sir
by HockeyKnight on Jun 24, 2011 10:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Even dealin Olesz away, doesn’t make up for the additional $4 of wasted cap space four 5 years. You folks are gonna hate Campbell in two seasons.
That $4 million is gonna be the money you want to give Gudbranson or one of the other kids when hi ELC is up, and at that time, NO ONE is gonna take Campbell.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions
You brought up a good point earlier; what if the new CBA will allow an out to renegotiate deals?
by panthersfan27 on Jun 24, 2011 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Tallon acquiring Campbell twice with this contract proves he has a mancrush on him. Campbell won’t get bought out.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 10:44 PM EDT up reply actions
I said renegotiate, not buy out. There has been some thought that renegotiating contracts will be allowed in the new CBA.

Still, you’re talkin about a 32 yr old player with an incredibly stupid cap hit. He’ll be 34 and if you think that cap hit is gonna come down below $4 mil per, you’re not seeing this for what it is.

Rhino’s contract was done after this season. Not 5 years from now when all the kids ELC will be expiring. Its Campbell’s and Huet’s stupid contracts that made the salary dump’s necessary, cause NO ONE else would take them, evidently except the one man who signed them to them.

Jovo? Really? I mean I love the guy, my first hockey jersey I ever got was a Jovo jersey. But talk about a guy whose numbers are going down…
But you’re not paying him $7 million for the next 5 years. You people see the world as black and white, and ignore the greyness in the future. You need to see past the next season
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions
try getting to the cap floor without a 7mil contract on the books when u still have to sign 10 more players… ur not going to find 10 players to sign for 3mil each per year.. and if u do youre getting screwed.. worse than chicago just did if this deal is in fact for rhino and rusty
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 24, 2011 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Wrong, you can sign players like Kovalev to single season contracts with insanely stupid to achieve bonuses, as ALL bonuses count towards this next season, not the following one, due to the CBA expiring. I forget where I read the write up it the other day, but it was a beautiful idea.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions
yet kovalev will need an oxygen mask on the bench and not produce.. sounds like a good substitute.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 24, 2011 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions
You NEVER have to pay the bonuses was the sweetest part of the deal, cause the goals are impossible to achieve, like a Olesz winning the Hart trophy in his contract.

For christ’s sake, I don’t see it as black and white, but geezus.
by panthersfan27 on Jun 24, 2011 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t see where you think his bad contract, which is a bad contract, is going to be such a hinderance. It’s not like we’re chasing Lecavalier or Drury or something. We’re building through the draft with young guys, we have a good core in place that’s already under long term deals. Money like this on Campbell isn’t going to break us. He’s worth having around, because honestly Weiss and Booth haven’t exactly exuded leadership, McCabe, Allen, Wideman are gone. Stillman’s gone. Campbell will be good for this club, regardless of a bad contract.
He’s signed to 5 years at $7 million per. ELC contracts are only 3 years, so you need to hope no one from this draft plays for two years and doesn’t sign a contract for two years, so their contracts expire same time as Campbell’s, so they can get pay raises.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions
No one is gonna take a 36 yr old Campbell at $7 per when these kids contracts come due for raises, and the Panthers need to give them contracts or lose them.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions
OK fine, so in a 2-3 years from now, let’s hope that enough of our draft picks are ready for full time NHL, 1-way deals. Besides Campbell now, who’s left that’s really going to prohibit paying some of these kids $1 mil a year? Or do you think every pick we make from 2010-2013 are going to be 30 goal scorers asking for $3-4 mil? Booth is signed for about $4.5 per, Weiss goes up to $4 per I think by 2013. Our biggest contract now with Olesz gone after that? Dadonov at $875k per. And having Campbell around until these top level picks mature and come along will only make us more competitive in the immediate future.
I’m pissed about this one. I wanted to see rusty through. DAMMIT

Twitter - @sdiaz6215
Ok listen, this isn’t about the type of player Campbell is. Its about $7 million for 5 years, as opposed to $3.1 for 3 years. Its the business aspect of the deal, and being able to retain the kids, all these picks come out to be decent NHLers. If it was $7 for two or three years, fine. Its the type of deal I’ve talked about in the past, BUT the contract is more freakin insane that takin on Horcoff’s if we dealt with Edmonton.
you act like the 7mil is going to put us at 64mil and as if we have 5 rfa’s coming up next season
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 24, 2011 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions
You still have a crapload of players to sign. If you want to be a serious contender, you’re gonna look for younger guys who can augment the kids we have. Campbell isn’t a younger player. He should be a stop gap, but that contract isn’t a stop gap contract. a 2 or 3 year contract is a stop gap.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions
And those younger guys, people who will score, cost money.

32 and final year of his contract, he’ll be 37 and earning $7.1 million. We are the ONLY team in the league that was willing to take that contract. Chicago has been tryin for two years to dump it.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions
sounds like similar situation with olesz’ contract..
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 24, 2011 11:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Difference being, Olesz has youth and the chance to develop still on his side, with the proper coaching. With Campbell you get an aging player with a stupid cap number.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions
A highly unlikely chance to develop, just to make that clear.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions
and again… the 7 mil is not putting us at 64mil with more players to sign, so were good.. you know what, we’re still 26mil under the cap.. with 10 players left to sign.. i think we’ll be ok ;)
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 24, 2011 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Ya know, whatever man. You like thinking about what the dollars could look like in 2013-2014, that’s fine. I get it, it’s a valid point. Maybe it’ll come back to haunt us and we see some good young talent go eslewhere because they want more money.
Personally, I’m happy to have a veteran, cup winning defenseman on what will be a young team to help us be competitive in 2011-2012. Just two different arguments and view points, stop acting like yours is right and everyone else is an idiot.
I don’t think you’re an idiot. I think you’re a fan. I think Tallon is an idiot, just to put that out there
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Oh, and I had high hopes for Tallon. Now I’m scared at what kind of stupid money he’s gonna toss around July 1st on a subpar free agent class, when if he waited a year, he’d have the chance to sign a MUCH better class of players.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions
you mean another class of players who wont want to come here?
you seem to forget theres a minimum cap we have to meet, they arent going to just forget about that for a year simply so we can wait for better players to go for.
besides i wouldnt call richards or gagne subpar. nor would i call fleischman or laich

Compare your class this year to this class
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions

So I’m confused. Next year’s class is full of good second tier talent with some high level exceptions.
by panthersfan27 on Jun 24, 2011 11:29 PM EDT up reply actions
You have guys like Sharp, Umberger, Boyes, who are all about the 30 yr or under mark, that can be brought in to augment this team, and take them from a team of youth, to a serious contender, similar to when Briere was brought into Philly. While they’re not superstars of the Crosby, Stamkos, Ovechkin ilk, they’re guys that would make a difference on a team. Suter, Carle, Coburn. $5 or a highly doubtful ^4 mil per for the same 5 years, as opposed to to Campbell would be a hell of a lot more beneficial.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 24, 2011 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions
What’s to say they’ll even be available, though? Sharp probably will be off the list. Umberger, Boyes, and Stempniak all would look good at the right price, though.
