2011 LBC Florida Panthers / NHL Entry Draft Day Two: Live Open Thread
After a big night which saw the drafting of Jonathan Huberdeau and a purely cap-motivated transaction featuring much-maligned Rostislav Olesz rolling to the Blackhawks for Brian Campbell, the Panthers head into Day Two with 2 selections in round two, 4 in round three, and 1 each in the fifth, sixth, and seventh. For now.
No deals involving picks...yet; how much longer will that be the case?

I don’t like his size, sure you could throw the st louis example out at me, I just dont think we have the size/talent to match him with just yet. I mean we could throw him with some 6’4 center n hope it works out, but its not garunteed..
Saad is pretty good when it comes to work magic in the opposing zone plus he plays with mcfarland which could be good chemistry for us in the future… Jurco’s stick handling as well as his shootout ability would be a huge plus to us, and he knows Huberdeau well, and plays with him in saint john

From TSR
“Easily one of the more skilled players available in the draft, Grimaldi has a proven track record of production at every level. Strong work ethic and dedication to the game have enabled him to develop skills in skating, passing, shooting and puck handling that could comprise a video on "How To…." All indications are that he’ll keep developing as he moves up the ladder. The only obvious knock is his size.”

I was hoping Tallon would go against the blueprint and take Grimaldi. Woohoo!
Besides, it’s not like there won’t be giant slabs of beef to stick up for the little guy.
The way I see it, Kane is undersized obviously, so maybe he really sees some really good skill and work ethic in this kid.
- Go Panthers -
I think some people are focusing too much on the “size” part of Dale Tallon’s blueprint and not enough on the “character” part. Given size vs character, Tallon’s taking the character every time.

Swedish defensemen
“Bengtsson really came on during the second half of the season and is a player with tremendous upside which should justify a draft selection within the top three rounds. Part of what could be a pretty solid crop of Swedish defensemen in 2011, Bengtsson plays a responsible defensive game while also being a very smart player with good offensive instincts. He’s going to need some time to develop, but he’s a player who could be a very nice pick-up for any team willing to step up and take him.”
by Alexander Calloway on Jun 25, 2011 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions
Also
An offensively skilled defensman with a good shot. Very solid on the blueline and with the potential to become a good power play quarterback. Passes the puck well and has good on-ice-vision. Fine mobility and plays pretty simple in his own end. Nice size, but could play more physical. (EP 2011)

“Trocheck was one of the top players with the Saginaw Spirit this past season and does a lot of things well, but lacks a defining quality to his game. A little undersized, Trocheck isn’t blazing fast and doesn’t quite have the talent to consistently be an offensive threat; also being guilty of taking some shifts and games off. When he’s on, Trocheck is a player that has some decent upside as he has a pretty nifty snap shot and isn’t afraid to use it. He also will take his game to the front of the net and some of the areas that teammate Brandon Saad tends to avoid. If Trocheck were a little bigger or more dynamic, he could make a case to be in the Top 60, but in this draft, he’s better suited to be selected somewhere around the 3rd or 4th round. "

Logan Shaw!
“Shaw started to find his game during his third year in the QMJHL and could be a bit of a sleeper to look out for given his large frame and unpolished game. The Mooseheads winger was one of the bright spots on a pretty poor club last season and has pretty good goal scoring instincts and has the ability to get things done. As mentioned, he’s pretty raw and is definitely a risky project, but in a draft that starts to thin out after the second round, he could be worth the risk.”

How far off is Howden from making the jump to the team? I know Bjustad is still another year or two way.
Looking at our offense for this season, not counting any free agents, and it’s pretty slim assuming Huberdeau stays in juniors another year.

If I was Tallon, I would be looking for some veteran first line wingers that can play onv the same line as weiss. I think that they will keep booth and dadonov on the same line, but it wont be with weiss. So whose left to pick up? They will have to outbid for a free agent or make a trade…
I think it is very doubtful that we will see any of those kids except Gudbranson on the NHL roster. Maybe at the usual trade deadline purge when there are no players left to play….
the purge won’t be happening anymore.. not unless its an insane offer we cant refuse.

Forgive me for my timing, had to work yesterday and today, and my ignorance in regards to my question about the Olesz for Cambell trade. There have been a lot of mixed reactions when it comes to the deal about chasing a bad contract by getting another one. I feel like its a good deal which I will explain later but first my question. If the Panthers decide after year 3 that Cambell is no longer worth 7.1 million and they decide to buy out the contract, how long and how hard does our cap take a hit?
The reason I am in favor of this trade is multiple. 1.) I was a huge olesz fan but honest to God he was not performing. So to take on a player who puts up more points is a win. Taking on a player who puts up more points as a d and freeing up a spot at forward to get someone who will have even more production is a huge win. 2.) We were going to “sit” on Olesz’s 3.5 mil contract and get minimal output from it so acquiring a player of Cambells caliber is really like signing him as a free agent for 3.6 mil for the first 3 years. 3.) If we do buy ouy the contract and it only hits us for 1yr, big deal! At least we got production out of it for a few years. 4.) Tallon seems to be a great trader. He has made average players look great and turned around and dumped them for high draft picks i.e. Dominic Moore for a 2nd rounder. Who knows how desperate a team will be for a player of Cambells caliber. And lastly 5.) All off season long all that we heard was needing a d-man to jump in the play to help the offense. We had McCabe and Wideman who could do things when we set up but neither could lead the rush. We now have that in Cambell and he can teach that to the younger d’s that are coming up.
I think this a great deal for the immediate future and we may be able to escape too much damage from the back end of it. Still scary though, 37 yr old at 7.1 mil.
by Ad1zzl3 on Jun 25, 2011 1:47 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
I think we got a good deal in this trade, like I said, I’d rather sign one big contract than a bunch of inflated little ones. By getting Campbell we’ve quarantined the disease that is bad contracts across the roster. One buyout is better than 5.
That was a helluva lot to type on your phone, welcome to the site :)
by Chris S Roberts on Jun 25, 2011 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions
All bonuses count hard against the cap this year, meaning if Samsonov was signed to a $1.5 million contract but offered a $2 million bonus for winning the Hart and another $2 million bonus for winning the Richard awards, he have counted as $5.5 towards the cap this season, even if he never receives the bonuses. So you can sign a bunch of mid to low level players to cheap contracts with stupid and impossible to achieve bonuses, and easily attain the salary cap floor.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 25, 2011 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions
To answer your question, if bought out, IIRC its half the value for twice the length of the remaining years, meaning if he has three years left on his $7.1 mil contract when bought out, its a $3.55 hit for 6 years after the buyout. That’s more than Olesz was earning, and he at least was gonna occupy a roster spot, but his contract would have been up before then also.

As I watch these replays of Bure's career...
I realize how elite he truly was.. Ovechkin has nothing on him. Imagine if Bure got to play in an NHL with todays rules, all those two line passes that would have lead to break aways would be break aways.. all the times he was grabbed, pulled down etc would now be penalties leading to power plays where he scored a big number of goals..
guy scored 59 in florida who’s next best player at the time was whitney who had declined from his career best year. Bure even made Kozlov better and helped him to his best year..
Wish he didnt have the knee issues and could come back to help florida out, since he loves it here
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 25, 2011 1:54 PM EDT reply actions
If they allowed two line passes in Bure’s days, he’d have scored 150 goals, since he didn’t believe in entering the defensive zone and only cherry picked at the end of his tenure here.

I think we’re getting close to good and maybe a good season this upcoming season. The good players that we have now and dveloping are Booth, Weiss, Skille, Santorelli (Hopefully), Reasoner (Hopefully), Mathias (Hopefully), Carter (Hopefully), Hurbedeau, Howden, Bjustad, G Wison, Gudbranson, Kulikov, Ellerby, Garrison, Weaver, C Wilson, Campbell, Markstrom, Plante, and Cheverie. We’re getting close to the playoffs once everyone is done developing.
- Go Panthers -
I can imagine Matthias being used as trade bait.. if not this offseason sometime next year, too many top centers coming up. Sure he still has nice hands but he wasn’t developed properly by us and his offense hype has left
