NHL Realignment Talks
So at the draft the topic of the impending realignment came up according to Yahoo Sports as the new Winnipeg Jets have shaken up the league. The idea currently being thrown around is to have 4 divisions, having 2 divisions with 8 clubs, and the other 2 with 7. The regions being named are the Pacific, Midwest, South, and East. This has got me thinking of who would be in what division.
EASTERN
East: BOS, NYR, NYI, MON, OTT, NJ, TOR, BUF
South: FLA, TB, CAR, CBJ, WAS, PIT, PHI
WESTERN
Midwest: CHI, MIN, WPG, STL, NAS, DAL, DET
Pacific: LA, ANA, SJ, VAN, PHX, COL, EDM, CAL
Judging by these regions they would need to rename them to something more like Northeast, South, Midwest, and Pacific. Both Detroit and, most desperately, Columbus want in on the Eastern Conference. The idea is to have divisions based on time zones but with 16 teams in the Eastern time zone then the ultimate debate hinges on the Red Wings and Blue Jackets. Unless they take down the conference idea all together. What would any of you do?

Division names:
Adams (BOS, NYR, NYI, MON, OTT, NJ, TOR, BUF)
Norris (CHI, MIN, WPG, STL, NAS, DAL, DET)
Patrick (FLA, TB, CAR, CBJ, WAS, PIT, PHI)
Smythe (LA, ANA, SJ, VAN, PHX, COL, EDM, CAL)
And uneven divisional alignment, could be the prelude to expanding by two more teams, both possibly Canadian. Think Quebec and a second Toronto/ Hamilton area team.
Much as I’d love to see them, Bettman will never allow the old division names to return. Nor likely would his overlords at NBC.

You won’t see a pro sports team in Vegas because of the sports books they keep. No league wants a team there.

How is there a dilution of talent when you have twice as many countries sending kids to the NHL now, than you did before? There isn’t a dilution of talent. The talent level has just risen to a level that, guys who’d have been third liners in the NHL back in the 80s are now career AHLers and second liners then are the bottom line guys now, grittier, muckier types who can put in 10-20 goals. You just don’t see as many superstars on one singular team now.

And you realize, by buying into the theory of “dilution of talent”, you’re justifying the northern belief that southern expansion is killin the NHL.

I can understand the dilution of talent concern, but as fans we are the benefactors of expansion. Gotta return the favor sometime.
