Panthers trade for rights to Chicago's Kopecky
A conditional seventh-round draft pick was enough to lure Stan Bowman's Blackhawks into sending soon-to-be unrestricted free agent Tomas Kopecky to the Florida Panthers.
The 29 year-old forward's expiring two-season contract paid him $1.2M per year, with an identical salary cap hit. Yes, Dale Tallon signed him to it.
It's entirely possible Kopecky allows himself to test the waters of unrestricted free agency on July 1st, but honestly: forgetting this is yet another of likely many 'Hawks to head for Sunrise, who's going to offer more than the Cats?
Pencil him into the roster.
Official statement here. Talking Repik after the jump as well.

Yea, both of us reported the trade. Is there a way for that to work?

Breaking news – on the front page – is handled in-house. Everyone is of course encouraged to utilize the FanPost/FanShot features, and “breaking” a story is no exception there, but promoting a FanPost to the front page typically involves a submission containing no less than 4-5 paragraphs with analysis/opinion.
A very good set of guidelines – which I shall post permanently soon - can be found here.

Exciting news!
we’ll see what comes of it, but it does look more and more that Sunrise is becoming a hockey destination once again
I would now love to get Versteeg on the team and possibly Andrew Ladd, although I’m sure he’ll resign with Winnipeg since he liked his tour there. Would be funny if Pat Sharp doesn’t sign with the Hawks and we end up getting him…… you can dream, right?

doesnt sharp still have another year?

Sharp has a year remaining at $3.9M.

Once again informed by a non cats buddy of mine..
Kopecky and Hossa are very close, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the sole reason of this trade is to use him as bait for Hossa for anything in the future. I have no idea what we would offer but it could be true..
As far as resigning I’m sure he will, tallon signed him once, it could happen again, and it’d be the first example of the influence Soupy has in Florida.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 27, 2011 6:12 PM EDT reply actions
Dude
1) Nobody’s luring Hossa anywhere, he’s signed to through forever to Chicago
2) this isn’t Campbell’s influence at all. If it’s anyone, it’s Tallon, but it probably isn’t anyone. Kopeckey doesn’t have a choice whether his rights get traded or not.
Dude
1) There is a very, very good chance that Campbell talked to players like Kopecky about coming to FLA and then talked to Tallon about getting him. Actually, if its anyone’s influence, it IS Campbell’s since Tallon didnt have permission to talk to another team’s property.
2) Obviously he doesn’t have a choice to come here if he is traded, but if/when he gets signed(before July 1) it will show that he wants to be here, and some of that will be because of Campbell, Skille, and Tallon.
3) I thought that Campbell was “signed to through forever to Chicago”, look what happened.
Dude
1) I’ll give you that Campbell could have talked to him, but it he’s not signed by Saturday I won’t give you that he did. The truth is definitely somewhere in the middle, but right now all thats happened is Chicago dumped an impending free agent they couldn’t sign on a team that thinks they can for a pick. Who talked to Kopecky doesn’t come into play for a few days at least.
2) Campbell was definitely signed through forever, but getting a player to waive his NTC with a choice between one team and another is different from getting him to pick you over 29 others throwing varying amounts of money at him
Campbell had a list of 8 teams he was willing to take a trade to. Panthers weren’t on that list. Tallon talked him into adding the Panthers.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 28, 2011 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Imagine if we signed Wisniewski… Our D could be top 5 in the LEAGUE. We can afford to throw 4-4.5 at him for 2 years or something. Our D would be unreal. Guds also will be signed to anywhere from 3-3.5 per year as an Entry Level contract. Seguin is making 3.55 as the 2nd overall pick so Guds will be just under that.
If we sign one of the better Dmen on the market to a 1-3 year deal around 4 million per, we can focus the rest of our efforts on forwards. The rate Dale is going, we could actually contend next year.
I like Wiz a lot – except for this quick yet painful moment in time – but who gets the bump if he’s brought in?

by Donny Rivette on Jun 27, 2011 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions
Is that him celebrating at the BAC? Oh, God lol.
And I’m not sure who would get the bump but I’d probably say it’d be a helluva roster fight between most likely Guds and Ellerby. If Tallon is looking for job competition, THAT is how you do it.
Yep. OT GWG. On New Years Eve. Still pains me to think about it.

OT: Repik
Just because he’s not on the club’s publicized list of those already offered contracts does not mean it couldn’t happen before noon, Friday.
Remember, Mike Caruso was not among those speculated upon only a day ago.
Litter Box Cats - Your tarp-free Florida Panthers Colossus
True
But there was never a publicized news announcement of the others that were speculated to have received offers like the one that was published today. Don’t teams usually send out all their offers at once?
I think Tyler Plante’s was separate from the other deals.

id love to hear peoples thoughts on whether it is realistic or unrealistic to imagine brad richards signing down here, i want to think that with the cap space, tallon, and an obvious positive motion for the team we could look attractive, but i wonder if he would ever seriously consider it. toronto and new york seem way more likely… would love to hear thoughts!
by stopdropandbreathe on Jun 27, 2011 7:05 PM EDT reply actions
I really, really doubt Richards is even considering the Panthers. Remember, there’s a whole lot going for this team but we’re still in full-on rebuild stage. If Vokoun leaves, that might become painfully obvious too.
However, Campbell was playing for a pretty sweet team and he moved here, so I wonder if the destination status is slowly being restored and players are buying into the Tallon-Dineen future
by Chris S Roberts on Jun 27, 2011 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions
If Richards was older I could MAYBE see it, but he’s looking for the last big contract of his career right now because he’s 31 years old. The panthers would never sign him to a 5 year 7 mil per kind of thing. It’s not the money we’d unwilling to pay but the term. He’s looking for long term and big money. That’s not Tallon’s thing right now, especially if you’re over the 30 hump.
I don’t see it.

GR just wrote that the Panthers believe that Repik is not RFA. Is this some wierd rule again from CBA? Anyone know? I bet it has something to do with number of games played….
GR's quote:
(*) — Everywhere I have read says that Michal Repik is RFA as well yet some with the Panthers say he isn’t and thus doesn’t need to be qualified. Have been trying to get confirmation from Mike Santos for the past hour or so.
Odd, indeed.

Question for anyone who can answer...
So we just traded for the RIGHTS to Kopecky. Was Tallon at any point in the trade conversation allowed to talk to Kopecky/his agent to discuss whether or not he would sign with Florida before hitting the FA market?
I know he did that with Campbell, but he had to waive a NTC so I think that’s a different scenario, or am I wrong?
Campbell situation still would have required CHI’s permission for Tallon/Santos (Tallos?) to speak to him prior to trade.

I wouldnt worry though, Kopecky has Campbell and Skille now (hope they were all good friends) as well as the man who signed him at the wheel. I say 90% chance he signed, if he doesnt oh well, at least we’ll only give up a 7th. I’d rather take risks than sit around twiddling thumbs like past regimes did.

Your tag line is what scares me. I’m a firm believer Tallon was a product of the men around him, not the man who did the actual job. Santos is good, but I don’t know if talon has the same men around him, coming into an organization that has been built into a group of “Yes” men through the years by Yormark.

Very happy with this deal
Kopecky is a great depth forward. I honestly don’t mind Tallon bringing in some of the pieces he had in Chicago…especially if they are solid players ala Kopecky and Campbell. Sign Kopecky to a good, affordable contract and lets go from there.
More GR/Repik...
Everywhere I have read says that Michal Repik is RFA. He is not.
Mike Santos says he is still on his first entry level contract. According to Santos, Repik will be RFA next summer as his contract slid a year.
Bascially, his three-year entry level contract became a four-year contract because of his age and his lack of NHL games in the first season of the contract.
Because Repik only played in five NHL games in 2008-09 (as an 18/19 year old), he doesn’t get credit for that first season. Yes, he played in 75 AHL games for the Amerks, but that doesn’t count. He would have had to played 10 NHL games for that season to count.

Much like how if we had signed gudbranson last year, we would have 10 games to try him out or send him back before his contract kicked in.
