My ideas for NHL realignment

These are some scenarios I thought the NHL could go for 2012-2013.

Plan A- Time Zone based

EAST

Atlantic- NYR, NYI, NJ, PIT, PHI

Northeast- BOS, MON, TOR, OTT, BUF

Southeast- FLA, TB, CAR, WAS, DET/CLM

WEST

Central- CHI, NAS, STL, DET/CLM, DAL

Northwest- WPG, CAL, EDM, COL, MIN

Pacific- LA, ANA, SJ, PHX, VAN

Plan B- Less Travel (mainly for West)

EAST

Atlantic- NYR, NYI, NJ, PIT, PHI

Northeast- BOS, MON, TOR, OTT, BUF

Southeast- FLA, TB, CAR, WAS, CLM

WEST

Central- CHI, NAS, STL, DET, DAL

Northwest- WPG, CAL, EDM, VAN, MIN

Pacific- LA, ANA, SJ, PHX, COL

Plan C- Expansion Adding 2 more teams and making 4 divisions in each conference

EAST

East Canada- MON, TOR, OTT, QBC

Mid-Atlantic- PIT, PHI, WAS, NJ

Northeast- BOS, BUF, NYR, NYI

Southeast- FLA, TB, CAR, NAS

WEST

Central- CHI, STL, DET, CLM

Mid-West- DAL, MIN, COL, PHX/New NHL City (Kansas City, Missouri; Houston, Texas; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma)

West Canada- WPG, CAL, EDM, VAN

Pacific- LA, ANA, SJ, PHX/New NHL City (Portland, Oregon)

Plan D- Return of Wales and Campbell Conference to create a mix of all teams

WALES

East- FLA, WAS, NYI, NJ, PHI

Central- PIT, STL, NAS, CAR, OTT

West- LA, WPG, PHO, COL, CAL

CAMPBELL

East-TOR, NYR, BOS, MON, TB

Central-MIN, CHI, DET, BUF, CLM

West-ANA, EDM, SJ, DAL, VAN

Plan E- Northern and Southern Conferences

NORTHERN

East- MON, BOS, NYR, NYI, NJ

Central- CHI, DET, TOR, BUF, OTT

Went for A just because its the most practical, but I cant help but wonder how awesome a north-south split would be

There’s nothing practical about Colombus or Detroit being moved into the southeast, when they’re midwest teams. I’d be more logical to move the Flyers into the SouthEast, having a regional rivalry with Washington, but not much else would make sense other than Nashville.

I could see Plan C being feasible within five years, especially considering Quebec is probably a lock for a new club.

Complete dream alignments, tho I like the return of the names of the two conferences. I’d like to see a return of the divisional names as well, if two teams were to be added in expansion.

Most likely alignment is goin to be:

Atlantic – NJ, NYI, NYR, Phi, Pit
Northeast – Bos, Buf, Mon, Ott, Tor
Southeast – Car, Fla, Nas, TB, Was

Central – Chi, Clb, Det, Min, StL
Northwest – Cal, Col, Edm, Van, Wpg
Pacific – Ana, Dal, LA, Phx, SJ

And that’s IF Phoenix stays in town. Geographically, it makes most sense, travel it makes most sense, as traveling across the border for Vancouver to play in the Pacific will drive up their costs with international travel taxes. And the difference between Vancouver to Phoenix and Dallas to San Jose is only about 150 miles and you already have rivalries semi built up there.
