Morning ladies and gents.
So how about Erhoff’s rights being passed around the NHL.
What are our target UFA’s looking like at this point?

Only element of last year’s UFA Day which squeaked it past the other options for me was the eleventh-hour Olli Bomb dropped by Calgary. The stuff of television gold.

He can’t afford him, not with what he’s paying Bryzgalov. That’s why Carter got exiled to Columbus.

Carter got exiled not because of his pay, but because of being a locker room cancer. Ownership got tired of his antics. He was Philadelphia, the city’s, playboy.

Well, somebody had to get exiled because of the money. So, they picked Richards and Carter for problems other than the amount of their contracts instead of Matt Carle and Kris Versteeg. The point still stands. Philly doesn’t have the cap space to sign Stamkos.

Philly really has no need for Stamkos, tbh. Not with Giroux, Briere, Powe, Betts, and now Couturier. They can sign a 3rd/ 4th line inexpensively and not have a problem, as they have enough talent to cover the wings as well.

Do you guys think we’ll need to acquire another D-man? Is it just in case something happens with Guds?
Campbell – Guds
Garrison – Weaver
Ellerby – Kulikov
Twitter - @sdiaz6215
There’s a chance he could be signed and given a stint in the ahl, an actual professional league with later callups. Plus there’s no saying garrison or ellerby will be back if they can be used as trade bait if we acquire another top tier dman
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 30, 2011 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions
There’s no chance of him being given a stint in the AHL. Its Panthers or juniors, period.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 30, 2011 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions
Because keeping him in a league he has no chance of developing in because he’s already above their playing ability while he’s already under contract (assuming he’s signed before the season and given a chance to make the team) wouldnt be a waste of a season for him at all..
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 30, 2011 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions
No, because there are age limit restrictions that guarantee a player under 20 yrs of age returns to the juniors and NOT the AHL. Learn something about the business man. Without the restrictions, the AHL would be flooded with junior hockey players.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 30, 2011 10:32 AM EDT up reply actions
Since I had read it before I went back to check myself..
Directly from the AHL site and it’s rules..
Per AHL By-Laws, the age limit for eligibility to compete in the American Hockey League is 18 years or over, on or before September 15 of each season of competition
The only exception of this is if the player is currently playing in the CHL, because they have a deal currently with the AHL stating that..
A player from the CHL has to either turn 20 by December 31st of the season (ie a player born in 1987 can start playing in the 2007-08 season, a player born in 1988 can start playing in the 2008-09 season etc.) OR have completed 4 seasons of junior eligibility. This agreement also covers European players if they are drafted out of the CHL Also – CHL players are eligible to play in the AHL once their junior season is over (either by virtue of their junior team not making the playoffs or being eliminated from the playoffs) even if they don’t yet meet the age or eligibility criteria listed above.
College players and European players (provided they are drafted out of Europe—even if they later play in the CHL) are not covered by this agreement. They only have to abide by the AHL’s age requirement, which is that a player has to turn 18 by September 15 of any given season to be eligible to play. While you won’t see many 18-year olds in the AHL, some European players have played at that age.
Homework done (Took the advice of Mr. Yormark) and schooling done as well.

Schooling. Gudbranson’s birthday is after January 1st and he’s only played three years of juniors. So he’d be junior’s bound. Thank you young one. Don’t just study reading, but also reading comprehension.

CHL = Canadian Hockey League, or the junior leagues. Not the po dunk hockey league from the central US called the Central Hockey League. WOW, no clue where Portland Pirates play and now no idea what the CHL means. There needs to be smilies on this website and a facepalm for this kid.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 30, 2011 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions
Just to clarify for you, the Western Hockey League (Plays in Northwestern USA and western Canada, including Portland, Oregon with the Winterhawks), the Ontario Hockey League (of which Gudbranson currently plays in), and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (Play in Quebec and the Martimes in Canada) are the three main entities that make up the CHL or Canadian Hockey League. Then you have smaller junior leagues like the Alberta Junior Hockey League and the British Columbia Junior Hockey League that don’t play for the Memorial Cup.

Not surprised. I think they really want Petrovic and Gudbranson to spend another year in juniors. They want this team to come together this year and then introduce those guys into that atmosphere. Which, frankly, makes more sense than rushing them into the NHL. And starting the year with a viable 7-man D-corps is not a bad idea. Ellerby has earned the one-way contract, but he should still be in a position to earn his minutes. That will make him a better player.

Exactly
Defensemen take longer to develop than forwards, so let them develop in the CHL, save the year of the ELC, and bring them into a winning environment. It worked for Ottawa’s AHL year when they won the Calder this year.

Im not usually one for rfa offers because of the cost of draft picks but as u look at the stats of stamkos and can safely assume they’ll continue as he’s still young.. id say the value of a player his calibur would be well worth 4 firsts, even if all 4 fall around pick 10 which from the sound of tallon he no longer wants to be picking there.. this would be how I see it, 5yrs at 10mil, 4yrs at 8mil, 3yrs at 6mil, 3yrs at 5mil.. 15yrs 115mil. That would put him as a panther until he’s roughly 36 with later yr cap hits not being nearly as bad as his value in his prime yrs we would get out of him..
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jun 30, 2011 10:02 AM EDT reply actions
I’m all for it, until TB pulls out a surprise last minute signing. They got Roloson under contract for another year now. I’m starting to like the chances of Vokoun staying better, since the only options seem to be Colorado or Phoenix.
the reason the Panthers should do something like that would be to cripple the Lightning at the very least. We are one of the few teams that actually has the money necessary to try and outbid the Lightning for Stamkos, but Stevie Y has stated multiple times that he will match any offer. If i’m Dale, I put in a similar offer that Rob suggested. EIther the Lightning match it, and then must pay a ridiculous cap hit which they can ill afford, or we get him and pay that ridiculous cap hit.
by alterego6487 on Jun 30, 2011 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions
That’s exactly the reasoning, should he not be signed by tomorrow what this offer does is cause them to sign him at it (of course assuming he accepts it) which would really hurt them. The cap hit at 10 mil alone would put them at 7mil under cap removing their chances of signing brad richards and slimming their chances of resigning gagne. Also take into concidering the fact that hedman will be an RFA after next season and they will most likely be resigning him for anywhere between 5-6mil per season..
Bottom line is if he accepts our offer and he accepts it, TB matches it and takes a 10mil cap hit. Leaving them unable to resign gagne or any other free agents this off season because they will want to save the space for next season when they need to resign hedman. Basically it blocks any chances for our devision rival to improve where as it gives us more free agents on the market to throw offers at. Even though I highly doubt we’d be in the running for Richards it still leaves gagne on the table. And hurts them next year as well as they look for a #1 goalie to sign along with hedman.

I’m just not sold on post-Ottawa Emery; yes he had a nice little run with ANH following a grueling rehab, but his off-ice attitude issues – so well publicized a few years back – may be a big detriment, especially on a club that doesn’t need a hothead in the dressing room.

And I’m sure that attitude is something Tallon would make clear he’s not going to put up with as well as Dineen. Could in some senses hurt us by playing Clemmenson as our #1 but at the same time he has shown signs of taking over the helm such as his year in NJ when needed to.. Hell, tossing him on waivers and him not getting picked up may even be a wake up call to him that he needs to get his shit straight, and if it’s not and he clears waivers he get buried in the AHL where chances are he’d never return to the nhl, not on good terms atleast.

Cheap contract, one or two years length. Brian Elliott, Dale Ellis. There’s options out there for guys who put on decent performances in split duty ice time. Losing Vokoun wouldn’t be the biggest loss, unless management is starting to have doubts about Markstom.
by MrOmnipotent on Jun 30, 2011 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions
Sorry but i disagree, Garon is a much better choice than either of those. Elliot floundered in Ottawa and Colorado, and Ellis couldn’t even hold on to a back up role in TB

Giguere. He’ll take a pay cut no matter where he goes. Hedberg or Theodore for a year wouldn’t be terrible. No point in signing Pascal Leclaire unless the intent is to get Markstrom some prime NHL bench time behind Clemmensen while Leclaire is injured.

maybe we should just focus on all the Tomas’s to build our team. Not a bad start so far. Last year I felt Volky was over the hill and over priced but at this point for one year he’d be worth whatever he wants. Problem is he’s not going to sign anywhere for less than three years as he’s in the drivers seat now and knows he probably won’t be again. From what I hear his kids are really happy hear and he doesn’t want to have them change schools again if possible. I just can’t understand what the hold up is in negotiations. Either he wants to stay here in which case we can and probably have offered him anything he wants or he wants to hit free agency and compare. I think he also sees his chances of making the playoffs for the other teams looking for goalies is no better than hear and that Dale is building something here now. If he doesn’t sign a trade may be our best bet.

He says the first game in the preseason double header is a rookie exhibition, with the second game being the active roster matchup.
Also says they’re pretty much done signing Guds, he’s gonna earn the maximum possible for ELC, they’re just trying to iron out the bonuses.
As for Vokoun, Av’s have been pursuing pretty hard, but they think he’ll go to free agency. Optimistic about resigning with Panthers now that DeBoer is out and the Campbel/Kopecky signings. Might also be waiting to see who we acquire tomorrow.
Lastly, the club is optimistic about Huberdeau making the team come Fall. They haven’t thrown out the possibility.

Wow, this thread has taken off! Anyways, just saw this on espn’s site… Florida currently has the lowest payroll in the league (surprise) based on currently signed players… Of course they still have Bernier and Bitz on our “key RFA list”, but it also says we only have 13 players signed?? Can that be right? I know espn is probably 18th on a top 10 list of websites for hockey info, but wow…
30. Florida Panthers, $38.1m cap space
CAP PAYROLL: $26,125,375
PLAYERS SIGNED: 13
KEY RFAs: F Steve Bernier, F Shawn Matthias, F Byron Bitz, F Mike Santorelli
KEY UFAs: F Sergei Samsonov, F Marty Reasoner, F Darcy Hordichuk, F Ryan Carter, D Alexander Sulzer, D Joe Callahan, G Tomas Vokoun
OUTLOOK: The Panthers need to spend and spend fast. They are so far below the floor, they have to spend more than $2.2 million per player on 10 signings to reach the $48.3-million lower limit.

Unreal, I knew we were low, just didn’t quite realize it until I saw the numbers, lol. Just to reach the floor, we have to spend $2.2 mil on 10 players?? Obviously, if we re-sign Vokoun, that’ll take up a good bit of it, but still….
Remember, we’re going to have to sign some veteran AHL types too, which will eat some of that cap up.
Yeah, I kinda chuckled when I wrote that too.
Scary thing for the NHL is that Tallon might need to poach RFAs just to make it reasonable.

13 roster players, defined as guys who were regulars last year. We have a number of other players including prospects signed as well. That includes Steven Reinprecht and also Tim Kennedy and Michal Repik, who aren’t locks but have a good chance start with the Cats. We also have several RFAs who have been qualified and will almost certainly be signed (Matthias, Duco, Plante, Cheverie, McArdle, Santorelli). Of them, Matthias and Santorelli will make the team, while a couple of the others might be seen over the course of the season. Actually, McArdle could make the fourth line out of camp.
So, we’re looking at a realistic roster of around 18. We’re still missing a defenseman and a goalie to make 20, but it’s not quite as insane as it looks.

Thankfully, he can be the first injury call-up from San Antonio, and counts fully against the cap.

His salary would only count against the cap on days he’s on the NHL roster, so sending him to the minors would be counter-productive to using his contract to meet the salary floor.

Yes, they lent him to that team in Europe for the season. He’s still on the books. I won’t pretend to know what their plans are, but if they were going to buy his contract out, they would have had to do it today.

If they sign Vokoun an pick up a good FA that number will get much small real quick. You know Ryan Carter didn’t do so bad last year. Maybe not all that good either but he does have potential.
From what I saw last year I predict 15-20 goals out of him for ‘most improved Panther’

Do you drink? I’ve waited tables in South Florida, and unless its a major game or a local team, most places won’t change the tv if they know for a fact you’re watching it. But then again, most places I go, no me and my friends will drop a good amount of cash on alcohol, possibly food, and a 30% tip (unless service is atrocious). In fact, most Duffy’s, Miller’s Ale houses, Bru’s Room are like this. Just don’t try and get an Ohio State game turned off in Bru’s Room on a Saturday during football season. You have a better chance of having two different teams play a game to a sellout crowd at the Horseshoe in Columbus.

I’m usually out mondays with friends and we go to the same place all the time, theres one manager who refuses to put anything we want on, in which case we go to the place next door after tipping our bartender well and apologizing to her for his stupidity and losing her business.
however when the GM of the place is in he puts anything we want on, when others complain he apologizes explains we had asked first and leaves it at that.. we handle the peoples remarks ourselves when they have some comments badmouthing hockey.

LOL is the manager who refuses to put hockey on, about five foot tall with a shaved head by chance? When I worked at Fort Lauderdale Ale house when it first opened, there was a dude there as manager who refused, REFUSED, to put hockey on, even when the owner of Yuengling brewery wanted to watch the Flyers and Panthers in Philly on tv. He loved to hold grudges with patrons of the bar as well.
Easiest way to shut anyone up when they criticize hockey is, ask them if they’ve ever tried to fight on ice skates. If they say no, tell them you’ll teach them how after you shove a pair up their asses. :)
