AtlantiPeg's Dudley out as GM

LOS ANGELES, CA - JUNE 25: General Manager Rick Dudley of the Atlanta Thrashers speaks on the phone during the 2010 NHL Entry Draft at Staples Center on June 25, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

The Toronto Globe and Mail is reporting Thrashers general manager Rick Dudley will not be retained as the franchise heads north for Winnipeg, Manitoba.

It's understandable that a housecleaning of some sort would be in order as the club moves in a (literally) new direction, but Dudley, with four years left on a contract signed just months ago, typically falls under the category of "in-demand" front office personnel.

A highly respected former player, coach, and manager, he spent five seasons assisting then-Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon in Chicago, which followed two years of service with the Panthers in various capacities.

Can't believe this guy remains unemployed for very long.

And right on cue:
The best bet is Dudley hooking up with Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon in some capacity because he was Tallon’s right-hand man with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Ditto

He got such a raw deal down here…thanks Alan.

Raw deal indeed. Never stood a chance at success.

Raw deal isn’t the phrase for it. Everything was in place to actually move this team forward, when Big Dick Dudley (sorry, I was an ECW wrestling fan) told Cohen to shove it over an argument about hiring Martin as coach.

Dudley might be brought in to be a special adviser to the GM, similar to what Scotty Bowman has been doing in Chitown. Just his scouting abilities in returning to Sunrise will be appreciated.

“…told Cohen to shove it over an argument about hiring Martin as coach”

Wonder who won that one after all this time?

that was easy to figure out, since the word was out he was fired within 30 minutes, as heard it. Next day Martin and Keenan were in as coach and GM. And everything has truly gone wrong since then. I am a firm believer, Tallon was a product of the men around him, not so much the work he did himself. But I learned a long time ago, the sign of a good manager, is a guy who can sit on his ass and do nothing, while the work still gets done correctly and timely. A manager delegates responsibility, and only works when he absolutely has to.

yup, but that’s exactly what ended up getting him canned in Chicago – he trusted someone to send out qualifying contracts and it didn’t happen. He was probably sabotaged, but it was his watch and he should have made sure they went out.

May I present this guy

what might he do here? Santos is already the assistant GM

Therein lies the question of the day; got to imagine WPG would be highly motivated to “assist” any other club in hiring him.

What do you mean by that?….“motivated to "assist" any other club in hiring him.”

Call it “future considerations” down the road from the Jets (or whatever) to the club who takes Dudley’s 4-year contract off their hands.

Cant he hop on with another club while he is being payed by them? I know it works that way in baseball.

If he goes to work elsewhere in the league he off the books in WPG.

Are there any teams out there needing a GM?

He might want to run the show somewhere before coming back down to FLA.
(that said, I like the guy and would like to see him back with the Panthers in some capacity)

by jimmyh71 on Jun 5, 2011 4:10 PM EDT reply actions

Keep in mind he did run the show here for a short period, as well as setting up Jay Feaster for the ’04 TB cup run.

No GM vacancies exist off the top of my head (though there might be one in DAL after Richards got Bouwmeestered by Niuewy).

I know…too easy a target on that one.

Got to believe CBJ’s Scott Howson may be on a short leash; going into his fifth year.

no respect

This guy is the Rodney Dangerfield of hockey. He is quality so it would only be a plus if he could help us in some capacity. Though he does deserve and instantly would accept his own new gig.

A little irony that Dudley’s job was offered to Cheveldayoff. The same man who replaced him Chicago as assistant GM.
