Exclusive: Florida general manager Dale Tallon (r) makes his first offer to unrestricted free agent Brad Richards

Eh, that’s his interpretation of the interview. i heard it as well and it sounds like Vokoun wants to stay at the right price.

I wouldn’t be shocked, but in all honesty all I’ve heard from sources in the arena is that he wants to stay. So, it leads me to believe that the front office is holding the line on a price, or they’ve got an agreed price depending on what Dale can do in free agency.
From the sounds of things, there’s an offer on the table, he’s going to see what he can get from other teams and if no one’s going to overpay him, he’ll stay.

I don't see what Colorado can offer
Vokoun to Colorado seems to be the popular rumor, but they’re one of the two teams that drafted higher than the Panthers. Also, Colorado has a state income tax, right? If both clubs offered the same amount, Vokoun would likely stay.

1st step is to get him signed by camp, then if he proves himself and works for the spot then he could have it. If he has to get sent down though it has to be back to the OHL though and from my understanding cant be recalled until Kingstons season is over. It might be worth the risk, but it might not.

LOL, you know if the panthers lost 4 first round picks for stamkos on an offer sheet, it would be as if they started last years first round all over again.
i don’t think that it’s such a bad idea. stamkos is still young and fits what we want to do as far as the future. in 6 years you won’t question paying him 10 mil a year. hopefully those draft picks will no longer be in the top 5 or 10 or even 15 as well. if that were to be the case there is no way any of those mid to late draft picks yield more than one (if that) talent of Stamkos’ caliber.

iF panthers lose vokoun in free agency, the cost of picking up vokoun to begin with was for nothing.. we lost all those first round picks for nothing.I will blame JM and sexton for the loss.
To be fair, it wouldnt have been for nothing. We got 4 years out of an amazing goalie which probably made these last few years a lot less painful

a trade for vinny would be bigger to us then people may think, him and richards are best friends, hes the reason tb drafted richards and they hated being seperated when he was traded..

I hope the Panthers stay away from Semin, he has wayyy too many issues. There is a reason why the caps have kept signing him just to one year deals. He is lazy, along with Backstrom. Ovi is the only one that does anything.
If a lazy player can score 40 goals… sign him up. That’s way more than a lazy Horton ever came close to.

they have huge giant size posters of Ovi, Semin, and Backstrom outside of the Caps Arena. They have huge posters of the old guard of the caps outside their new practvie facility…Only in Washington would they put the past and current players up for the world to see on F street, nw… While in Panthers Country, they would put an ad for jetblue or prostate doctors in a billboard on the side oft he arena and at their new practice arena.
12 minutes until the tallon show takes over…. anyone else notice besides the philly trades recently Tallon has been the only one to make events such as this, the draft, trade deadline etc interesting.

I disagree – all they’re saying is that you don’t want to give him a raise over what he was making last year for a goalie that’s really never been to the playoffs. I’ll agree with that sentiment, Vokoun’s on the downside of his career and anyone who gives him a large contract with more than three years is an absolute fool.

Depends on the final roster. Out of this roster, I expect Campbell, Weiss and Booth to be around for a while. Also, Guds if he signs and makes the team.
I’ll probably go with Weiss unless they sign one of the UFAs I really like (Cole, Gagne).

OK, I’m going to try to reason this one out with my ever-fading optimism… Vokoun was gone. He made it known he’s not coming back. If Clemmenson is the default starter, that leaves a still young, not quite ready Markstrom as our back up, not getting any better sitting on the bench for 50 games next year. Or we call up one of our career AHL-ers, and God forbid they ever see the ice… Theodore will push for the starting job, he was a backup in MN last year because they had an all-star quality guy in Backstrom. He’s got something to prove, he’ll be happy to compete and push Clem to be better or he’ll be on the bench. As far as the alternative goes (again, convincing myself there was no way to get Vokoun back)… I can live with it (at least until the games start)

Whoever wins the starting job, the other guy will be there all year, pushing to win the job back. Competition is a good thing. I don’t think Vokoun ever felt that here (not that he should have…) but there always was that stretch in March and April where he’d let the ones from the corner in, fall asleep on a rebound, whiff with the glove… I remember the game threads where people were screaming to trade him right f*$king now! We’ll see what happens with these two, but…

Ok, so here is my theory. If we resign Vokoun then we can trade or release Clemmerson at minimal cost. If Vokoun leaves, and it sounds as if he is, then we have two average goalies to carry us over and we may have Markstrom up before the year is out to see what he can do. Remember that Clemmenson is on the last year of his contract so Theodore is litterally a bridge between Vokoun and Markstrom. I would rather have Theodore as my back up anyways due to Clemmensons performance with shootouts(not that we should be aiming for those).

doesnt matter, varly is going to the KHL. INterestingly, he stated that the Caps trainers are at fault for all of his injries because he has been playing injured the whole season. HE staed that he isg oing to go to russia to rehab and work on his game. Avs win this, if Varly decides to come back tot he NHL in two years.

The Panthers left the draft with 10 new prospects and for the second year in a row, seven in the first three rounds. Their first round pick, Jonathan Huberdeau is a potential star forward. They also managed to snag the diminutive but immensely talented Rocco Grimaldi and center Vincent Trocheck. Shipping out Rostislav Olesz, a perennially underachieving forward who was locked up to a bloated contract for several more years was a bonus. In return for Olesz, the organization will have to take on the even more bloated contract of defenseman Brian Campbell, but given the team’s necessity to get above the cap floor, as well as their youth on the blue line, the move is made easier to swallow.
Huberdeau could possibly be ready for the NHL next season but either way, along with their many high picks from 2010, the Florida Panthers now have an enviable amount of young talent.

That’s in a few years when all the guys on entry level deals are RFAs. That’s how you properly manage a team payroll under a salary cap. If we go to the ceiling now, we’re screwed in a couple of seasons.

I feel like Tallon could potentially trade Garrison for a proven scorer… He kind of seems like the odd one out and the guy without the upside… I don’t think the team wants to get rid of Guds, Ellerby, or Kuli, and Weaver and Jovo are our vets back there. And no one’s moving Soupy DUH. So I think it could be possible.

if Fleischman is healthy, he’s a great signing, as he can play all three forward positions solidly. The money, for a guy with DVT problems isn’t great, but he’s young enough to be written off the books.
And I’m kinda shocked at the amount of 4 year deals Tallon’s done. Think of it this way, all the recent picks are gonna finish their junior careers, then spend a year or two in the AHL, as these contracts expire.
Being 27 doesn’t mean they’re gonna be resigned. Just in their prime, age range for Weiss. If 50% of our picks, preferable the top three round guys from the last two years, all develop, all of these guys are replacedable. And as things stand now, Tallon might have cap room next season, or the year after for a finishing piece for a Cup run.
Most will still be in their primes, when these contracts are up for renewal, at 31 yrs of age. Pick and choose……

I’m pleasantly surprised at no overly stupid contracts. Nothing overly stupid whatsoever this offseason, except the Campbell contract. Vokoun needs to be resigned tho.
Agreed. Though I think the Campbell contract actually helped by showing there was a willingness to take on that kind of contract. And I totally agree on the contracts being well within reason. Key is a lot of these players are in the beginning of their primes.

Which is a great thing in my opinion. Got to make them push to get on the squad. I think this rests any talk of Huberdeau coming this year, which is great. Allow him to dominate another year and bulk up more.

Mike Santos has already said as much, it’s just everyone here is used to the Panthers bringing draft picks in right away that they refuse to believe it. Also, San Antonio wouldn’t have wanted to affiliate with us without some assurances that all of those great prospects were going to see some time there first.

Two years, and leave Markstrom in the AHL for this year, and as a back-up the second. Keep Theo for injury insurance.
Make him earn the starter’s role in the NHL. This next season, give Theo and Markstrom 50-50 duty and play the hot goalie in San Antonio.

Question is, can the owners afford to go to the ceiling. One. Two, why go to the ceiling, when you can add one more piece to the puzzle, and save cap space for deadline day and/or resigning your UFA’s/RFA’s in future seasons?
Right, but even when we poke above the floor, we could still tag 2-3 mil short term and no be hurting our cap situation now or down the road.
Goin slightly above the cap floor isn’t a problem, even spending up to $55 million, but the Cats don’t need to spend to the ceiling, until they figure out how all this they have presently is gonna mesh out. There’s a lot of pieces that need to familiarize themselves with each other.
yeah, and they can also rent their way to the ceiling if they have a good season and can get some deals without blowing up teh future too

Campbell – good foundation, lure for others to come to FLA, justifies the high price tag
Kopecky – proven winner, kills penalties, gritty
Upshall – may do well in FLA with new team, fresh start.
Goc – Looks like a bad move, could end up in minors or as a fourth liner by mid season
Jovonavski – Brings leadership & will help the newbies come along. Slightly overpaid and older, plus had injuries last season
Fleischmann – High risk high reward signing….30+ goals or he is a bust
Goc, with the proper wingers, is a good signing and will battle Santorelli for second line duty, and is capable of spelling Weiss from time to time on the top line.
Doubt it…he may fill in on the second line due to injuries but his rightful place will be on the 3rd or fourth line. He’s inconsistent and not physical….can’t understand why Tallon would sign him

Goc was at .5 PPG last year, and then he got hurt a bit. How is that a bad move of someone heading the the minors? He’s surrounded by more talent now and is young and still has upside. He was one of my more favorite TallonCat moves of the day. Very underrated player. Check out Billy Lindsay’s, Goldie’s, and Moller’s top Centers on the market. He was on all their lists.

Philly may have rendered itself this year’s buffalo, Habs have shedded more they’ve gained, and NJ and TO were wildcards with strong 2nd halves, but if they both stumble out of the gait again (possible between Wilson and Kovy) thing’s could open for for the KittyHawks…

from the looks of things now, Phoenix turned from a playoff team to a team that could end with a top 5 pick in next years draft..
Colorado hasn’t really improved and based on this years finish they could very well be drafting #1 overall because Edmonton has improved their team..

The Florida Panthers have become Chicago's retirement home. This is oddly fitting.
Didn’t have too much of a problem with them til I looked and it seemed like pure jealousy on their part, not just with the cats signings but with the rest of the leagues as well.. and their need to take shots at the acquisitions.

When the Panthers and Blue Jackets’ owners demand a lockout to reduce out-of-control salaries, remind ‘em it’s their own damn faults.
Malik should instead look at the real culprit. The Panthers were forced into spending that much because of the cap floor. I’m not complaining but man, he needs to shut-up.

I think it should be Ellerby/Guds. Garrison and Weaver absolutely dominated on the defensive end and there is no reason that that shouldn’t continue.

I think between Ellerby, Gudbranson, and Garrison, it’ll depend on who is the worst of training camp. Other two will stay up. Each equally likely.

You have Repik for one, but you still have the possibility a prospect has a phenomenal training camp, and beats Skille out for a spot.
And that is what I love about the depth on this team now; competition makes for better players!

Well, there is that little disadvantage, but it also means I don’t need to worry about how I’m getting home, I can flip between hockey and basketball as much as I want, it usually works. The only other problem I know of is when my fiancee wants to watch Say Yes to the Dress and I have to argue about how that’s just not happening.
