Yormark
We have spent money in the past and it didn’t buy us anything because we didn’t make the right decisions. We are going to make them now. Our hockey operation is as good as any in the league and is cleaning the slate to move forward.

We’re losing money, no question about that, but that can be turned around very quickly.
Unless the CBA drastically changes, I just can’t see that turnaround—the economics don’t work, and it has nothing to do with where the team is located—if the team does win, and revenue is increased, they’ll just forgo revenue sharing—the system is broken. There’s no way a team that is losing almost 10mil a season according to Forbes can turn things around quickly— and it doesn’t matter about winning especially when the Caps lost 9.1 mil last season. It’s stupidity like this from Yormark that really depresses me.

Only way this team is goin to make it without revenue sharing is winning. But not just winning. Winning in a dominating fashion. And this is a reason, I believed the Cats needed another losing season or two, to have that top two or three draft pick, and to draft some elite level offensive talent. After this offseason’s moves, if the panthers don’’t produce a winner on the ice, its gonna do more harm than good to the casual fan/observer. A lot of the moves were smart in term length, age of player, type of player. I just think it was too soon in the rebuilding process and sometimes the situation creates that dilemma. The situation being, you weren’t going to see the type of players in regards to character and work ethic, on the market in a year or two. Possibly just more high end talent as UFA’s.

Another good thing about the contracts signed is, in two/three years, when the kids in camp today are starting to demand roster spots, the guys signed recently will be valuable assets for trades, in cheap contracts and short term lengths. A lot of these guys will be the types playoff teams are lookin for. So they might garner a derth of top end picks that can be used to go after a top two pick and draft a Toews, Stamkos, Malkin, etc.
Well, except Campbell with his contract.

I agree but again—if a lot of the successful teams on the ice are have an operating income (earnings before taxes) in the red like the Caps, how can we expect a winning to model to work?
by Craig Fischer on Jul 12, 2011 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions
I mean when you look at the teams making money, a good chunk of them aren’t winning teams. I wanted to write something on this but I’m not prepared to get merc’d again lol.

Hey, I completely understand. It was 10 years ago, maybe less, that the Red Wings said, if they don’t make it at least to the conference finals, they usually lose money on a season. But this is why I said, a DOMINATING fashion. They need to make season tickets desirable again. Full season, not a ten game pack. They need to make people want to fight for tickets, similar to back in the day at an Eckerd drugs that had Ticketmasters and sold Panther Pack tix at 10 am, on the day of game and sold out in under 3 minutes, even for the worst of teams. but if the Panthers can become one of the more marketable teams in the NHL by dominating not for one or two seasons, but by becoming the modern idea of what a dynasty is, similar to Detroit or Jersey has been over the last decade, then the sponsorship dollars are gonna go up as well, as we have something most other teams don’t. We have Latin American companies lookin to get into mainstream USA and Canada for business. Not just cater to the Hispanic community. So we have a potential for more sponsorship when occupying the main stage.

Hmm, interesting take on the Latin American companies.

I really think differently than a lot of fans when it comes to the business side of hockey, and it influences a lot of my thoughts as a fan in general. I got slammed a lot on a few webpages in the early 2000’s for it. Which is why i understood where you came from with your write-up and why I defended it.

Has anyone...
Heard anything about Guds out there? Any news on him signing soon?
A lil thunder and a lil lightning is what the Cats are going to bring this year.
No signing news; be shocked if anyone on “the inside” even decides to address it publicly during camp.

I’m so there Oct 15. Sitting in my usual spot over the entrance to the opposing team. Such the better view to see…. Flash score the first goal off an assist from Captain Weiss..
I’m so there that I’m working on my funds for 2012-2013 season seats :-)

Might have a better seat available that night. Stay tuned tomorrow.

Off topic a little....
Just a littel junior hocke related thing. Tonite on A&E if you watch the hour long episode of Gene Simmons Family Jewels, he and Shannon were here in Saskatoon back in December and they filmed tonites episode here. Check it out to see the local WHL Blades, as Gene took to the net during the 1st intermission…

Does anyone know what Jacob markstroms new number is?
by CatNipp on Jul 12, 2011 2:02 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Timmins looked awesome, the coaches kept him on by himself afterwords and they all talked, I think maybe for his opinion on the other prospects. didn’t really see Jenks, Howden is definitely ready for the top line in San Antonio. I was most impressed with Jonathan Hazen, he really showed up this morning.

And people think I’m crazy when I predict he makes the team and the starting lineup this year… There’s no need to rush prospects, but when they’re ready, they’re ready.
He would have been on the team last season, but both sides couldn’t agree on a contract.
by Alexander Calloway on Jul 12, 2011 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think you’re crazy. I just don’t think he’s a lock. That said, I’d love to see him make the team this year. I’m glad they sent him back to juniors last year, but the D’s pretty deep this year and “Bench ’Em” Pete DeBoer is gone. If he makes it, it’s because they think he can make an impact.
The question is who’s the odd one out. I don’t think it’s necessarily Keaton Ellerby.

about the financials
lots of sports teams lose money in their day to day operations. The real problem occurs when the losses are so drastic they surpass any rise in franchise values during a particular owner’s stewardship. There was a very interesting article a few years ago that showed almost every owner in NHL history has been able to sell at a profit over original investment and accrued operating losses while said owner possessed the team. Even Barry Shenkarow the last owner of the original Jets made a handsome profit when he sold them off to Phoenix. I’ll dig around and see if I can find it again.
I’d like to see that, Todd. Very curious what the WPG sale price was compared to its theoretical value at the time.
In the end no one locally stepped up to keep the team there.

too true. I really wish the NHL would have kept the teams in the 21 team league in place and expanded from there. That way we’d still have the original Jets, Nords, Whalers and North Stars. I’ll see if I can find that article. I remember he got something like $65 million for the Jets. They almost ended up in Minnesota to play at the Target Center the year before but the deal fell through.
That’s an awful lot of coin for that team. More so considering the Whalers were sold (not yet moved) for a click over $44M only two years earlier.

while I look for that article here is a little piece of information. I like to point this stuff out especially to our friends up north who think every team in the south is packing up and moving to Canada because they lose money every (or most) season. In 2003 Tom Golisano purchased the Buffalo Sabres for $92 million, during his ownership of the team they lost money almost every year (except one season) to the tune of $68 million. In early 2011 he sold the team for $189 million. So let’s see, $189 million minus $92 million original investment minus another $68 million in operating losses equals a profit of $29 million. A 32% return off his original investment in eight years, seven of which the team lost money.
So unless you have cases like Phoenix or Atlanta where the team is losing gobs of money in a short period of time, history shows franchise values rise enough to offset operating losses as long the losses aren’t out of control. The guys that buy these teams (in most cases) aren’t as stupid as fans like to think. They know operating a sports day usually involves losing money to some degree but that they will get it back and then some the vast majority of the time.
You’re not accounting for inflation or the devaluation of the dollar.

Original price was $108,720,000 in 2010 dollars. Still not a terrible investment.
