Stamkos Stays With Tampa Bay
Tampa Bay announced they’ve signed Steven Stamkos to a five-year contract to stick around with the fast-rising Lightning. The Sporting News’ Craig Custance tweets that the deal is worth $7.5 million per year against the cap bringing the total worth of the contract to $37.5 million. The rumors that swirled around the deal the two sides were working on proved to be true as the final amount of the deal was what was being floated in reports.

I’m fine with that, about 4 years hopefully until the Stamkos rumors come flying back.
Stamkos wins the deal as he gets to be a UFA as early as possible
Lightning win in ending the drama and locking up arguably the leagues best goal scorer for a reasonable $7.5 mil per season for 5 years
It’s a good deal on both sides. Those kind of deals are better for everyone really. It forces management to keep the team competitive around the star guys if they don’t have them guaranteed for 12 years, and it’s long enough to not be a distraction to the player and the team. That year we re-signed Jay Bo for one year was awful. That was a distraction the whole season.

Great deal, and refreshing it wasn’t another CBA-busting 8,10, or 12-year arrangement which we’ve become so accustomed to.

yeah, I think it’s time to dial down the top end contracts a little bit. They are getting a bit ridiculous in term and dollars. $7.5 million is plenty for the best players in the league to make per year.
I don’t wish to tell anyone what they can or cannot make, but the 5-year aspect is a revelation.

What can we get away with?
They should have nailed the CBA-circumventing BS a long time ago. The Kovalchuk circus wasn’t enough to nix that crap. There will be a big battle to change all of that nonsense. I’ve got to hand it to Burke and Yzerman for not getting sucked into that garbage. Too bad there aren’t enough GMs around with some balls. The rest of them are playing the game of seeing what they can get away with.
