Nothing fancy this time around. Brad Richards, Tomas Vokoun, and a number of others still remain in search of new homes. As well, Mike Santorelli and Shawn Matthias await new contracts. Let it rip...

RealKyper: #Rangers. Apparently Richards left some money on the table and took less money to sign in Broadway. #NHL news.

Probably the Torts relationship?

Damn, you just beat me to that one. And yes, that would be my guess. That and they actually do have a number of good young players there. The Rangers with Richards are going to go further than the Flames with Richards. And between the Leafs and Rangers, I can see going with the coach you’ve already worked with and like.

Oh right, forgot about the Kings. Don’t know. I kind of feel like it was the Leafs who offered more money, but I don’t actually know that.

i sort of feel obliged to buy tickets. i’m the only one that i know that loves this team and have been away for school in the past but still manage to make it to around 15 games. however, the Panthers never see my money cuz i scalp. i feel obliged to let them see my money now.

by alterego6487 on Jul 2, 2011 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, my problem with that area is that it’s so hard to see the other side of the ice. I prefer the corner area. We’ve been in 422 the last couple years and were in 420 before and I like both of those sections. Lower bowl I want to be closer to center so I can see both goals, but they get a lot more expensive really fast down there.

That’s the truth for everyone who doesn’t have $8-10mil players. Everyone’s bagging on Florida for raising the UFA prices, but we didn’t invent the floor. The Isles may find themselves in the same boat, as well. They have 18 guys signed and are still $6mil under floor.

just getting in and..

I find it funny richards decided with the rangers.. lol you’d think if he’s going to take the same money he made last year he’d go to a team thats more capable of contending then the rangers. Like the rangers or not people need to realized that in past years no matter who they signed they always manage to disappoint year after year. If I myself as a player were signing a big contract that would be a big factor in not going there, and face it Richards is good, but he’s not THAT good as you look at his numbers from the past..

I think he made a foolish move not going to Tampa or even philly if they sent him an offer.
Sure it might come back and bite me in the ass but overall I think theres a good chance he’s going to go there and end up not making it past the east finals for the rest of his career.

From ESPN Insider article “Day 1 FA Winners and Losers”- their first under the loser category:

“Losers

Florida Panthers
There are many ways to get to the salary floor, and this is one of them. Trade for Brian Cambell’s enormous contract (that GM Dale Tallon signed in the first place, in Chicago), overpay LW Tomas Fleischmann — coming off a medical condition that may have scared off other bidders — and throw money at a rapidly declining 34-year-old D Ed Jovanovski, whose deal may already look bad in 2011-12, let alone four seasons down the line.

Yet sometimes the worst deals are the ones that are never made. It’s a mystery why the Panthers never dealt elite goaltender Tomas Vokoun at any point over the past two seasons, instead choosing to likely lose him for nothing in free agency. And if Vokoun — one of the best couple of NHL netminders since the lockout — in fact doesn’t re-sign with Florida, they can improve at every other position and still likely finish lower in the standings due to the magnitude of his loss."

Personally I think it’s stupid, while this year isn’t necessarily a throw away year it is more of a bridge to the next season when many prospects will be ready to come up and take over. It sets a foundation for them to come in to, including potentially Markstrom, Gudbranson, Howden, Huberdeau, etc… And while we will of course miss Vokoun, I really feel it won’t be as much as some people think. Just my opinion

by HockeyKnight on Jul 2, 2011 12:38 PM EDT reply actions

I didn’t know you have a losing day when you improve your team 10x over what it was the previous season.. apparently we’ve entered some kind of bazarro world where good means bad. Some of the prices might have been slightly high but at the same time the prices arent THAT far off. People need to get over the knocking of the panthers, even american press does it and it’s quite annoying. Good thing their foot will be in mouth soon enough.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jul 2, 2011 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. We didn’t sign a Crosby or Stamkos (yet? I’m too hopeful…) but we have depth that we haven’t had in years and years, we can compete with every line, our blueline looks great (on paper, but I’ll admit we need to see it on the ice too). Plus we had the money to spend and didn’t get absolutely ridiculous with contracts

by HockeyKnight on Jul 2, 2011 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

the only thing i agree with is losing Vokoun for nothing. i’d been anticipating him being traded for the last two deadlines….and he didn’t go anywhere

by alterego6487 on Jul 2, 2011 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I was actually thinking last night about this..

Obviously if you can pencil Vokoun in over Theodore on any given night you do it. but if you look at theos play from the past he’s actually very good, hes just had some bad luck during his career. Should that luck return then we have a very capapable backup with clemmer. Would love for Theo to shut them all up and have an amazing come back year as a #1..

Besides, if Vokoun wanted to resign here so badly like every article led us to believe then he would have instead of ‘testing the waters’. He said he want’s to resign with the cats but if a team who could potentially make him an offer he wouldnt be able to refuse.. Guess what buddy, Tallon isn’t going to sit and wait around to know his fate, he’s going to make his own and in turn you’re just on the outside looking in, and tallon doesn’t appear to have any interest in opening the door. Good luck wherever, unless things drastically change with some team right now, I expect him to go the way of Nabokov.. unless of course he gets an offer from the Islanders.. oh wait.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jul 2, 2011 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

IF....

Vokoun was as good as this writer claims he is, then he could have been signed during the Frenzy to some team. But, NO it didn’t happen. I like Vokoun but as my wife and I would say, “He looks like his mind is back in The Czech Republic.” I mean he’s good but sometimes it’s as though he plays 50 minutes of great hockey but for 10 minutes and I don’t know where the hell his head goes too. I’m must saying… Yes I know Clemmonsen and Theodore aren’t the best goalies but I hope that they can be consistant. Honestly that’s what we need. Please let us know if you are good or bad right away so we can fix it. Dont’ have these great 3 games then blow leads the next 10…Ok I’m done.

Good for Versteeg and good for us to get him. The only thing I’m not too thrilled about is sending a 2nd and a 3rd to PHI for him, when he only has 1 year left on his contract. I think picks are too valuable, especially for a 20 odd goal player.

by Pilchino on Jul 2, 2011 3:22 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

seems like a safe bet to say that if versteeg does well the first half of the season, he will have a reasonable contract extension by deadline time.

its a safe bet the 3rd rounder wasnt out pick which basically means we gave up a 2nd rounder for steeg, if all goes well this yr that 2nd rounder will be late and well worth steeg.. who is on a contract yr and may step his game up, plus hes an rfa next yr so we cant lose.

Right, but we got that pick to trade down in the 2nd this year. So really, we got that pick for something.

by Pilchino on Jul 2, 2011 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

id say trading down in the roughly 10 spots and giving up a 2nd is worth versteeg… better than the 1st and 3rd philly paid for him

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jul 2, 2011 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m also really happy to have landed steeg, ive wanted him since last off season when we got tallon and i heard they were trading hawks players left n right… a year later im still SO happy to grab him, he may not be the best player in the league, but hes one of my favorites..

then again the list of my favorites around the league other than crosby and Kane arent exactly star status lol… Grabner, seabrooke, bates battaglia (hasnt played for awhile) kostitsyn..

i’d go as far as saying 10mil per for 5 yrs and 6mil per for 3… 68 mil over 8 yrs.. 8.5mil each..

by Colt1235 on Jul 2, 2011 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions

…and that indeed. I have respect for Horton because he went through 7 years here and didn’t see it getting better, thats why he jumped ship. Vokoun went through 4 years here, knew it was getting much better, decided for a 100% chance to get into the playoffs. He’s an ass.

- Go Panthers -

by flpanther360 on Jul 2, 2011 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

he could have had the decency to contact tallon and given him the option to match the contract or even give another offer based on the lowball figure he took. It shows that he never cared to be here and it was all talk so he didnt look bad. but this completely nulifys that.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jul 2, 2011 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

GR estimating the Panthers would have paid him twice that for more years.

In any case, the ship sailed for Tallon once he signed Theodore. Vokoun was finished here. Remember, Tallon wants guys who want to be Panthers. Right now, it’s more important that JT wants to be here than that TVo is the better goalie, because he’s got a guy who should be better than both in a couple of years.

Theo wanted to be here, cause he wouldn’t have an NHL job otherwise. The kid in Minny had to go out for the season, for Theo to have a job last season.

by MrOmnipotent on Jul 2, 2011 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions

The why isn’t important. Yet. What’s important is the new guy wants to be here and the old guy doesn’t.

What’s important, regardless of where they want to be, is how they stop the pucks during a game, or more often than not in Theo’s history, if he stops the puck. Theo only has good years when its a contract year.

by MrOmnipotent on Jul 2, 2011 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

So Clemmensen plays. And if that doesn’t work out, there’s a billion other guys out there. Doesn’t matter. The goal is long-term, not this season. Tallon’s trying to build a dressing room now and a winner later.

He’s tryin to build both now. Don’t fool yourself. He’s ready for the letdown, but he’s lookin to win, this year.

by MrOmnipotent on Jul 2, 2011 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think he has any expectation of winning this year, he does however have expectations that we improve greatly, and possibly make the playoffs.

nobody expected the hawks to make the playoffs in 09.. and they ended up going a far as the west finals, sometimes its nice to not set expectations so high..

btw being in the building during game 3 in chicago when they beat the wings in OT was amazing. it’s what got me on board as a hawks fan.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jul 2, 2011 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, I don’t think he wants to lose, or doesn’t want to win. I’m just saying that he’s taking guys who want to be here over those that don’t even if the first guy is a better player, if that’s what it comes to. That appears to be the case with Vokoun. Vokoun wanted to go where he was guaranteed to make the playoffs and didn’t think it was here. Tallon needed a goalie and Theodore’s the guy he went with. We can argue about whether that was the right decision all season, but Tallon gave his reason and I was just repeating it.

Do I think Theodore is the best goalie that was available? No. But that guy didn’t want to be here and took less money from another team to not play here.

i never thought he was much of a character guy anyway. despite coming up big many nights when we needed him to, vokoun was never the guy to get inspired from during tough times, and i believe he was the best panthers player the last couple seasons.

Everyone has him listed as a free agent. If he tried to play in the NHL, they might have done something, but I think even he admits, his best days are long behind him now.

by MrOmnipotent on Jul 2, 2011 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess we’d have to check with Garth Snow to be sure, but the reports a few weeks ago say he tolled the contract and Nabokov was under contract for this season. Yesterday the Globe & Mail mentioned it as well in an article about the Avs picking up Varlamov.

it’s all irrelevant, i think. we’re not touching another goaltender at least until we see if Theodore is awful or not.

by alterego6487 on Jul 2, 2011 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Was trying to find a list of free agents next year..

Just to see what might become available, and if we do in fact improve and become the detination everyone is making us seem to be becoming.. and well..
Dustin Penner.. Ales Hemsky (one of my favs).. Patrick Sharp (another tallon reuinion?).. Alex Semin.. Ryan Smyth.. Shane Doan.. Rinne
No real clear cut superstar but still a good pool to choose from..

however when I moved on to 2013.. O M G.
Crosby.. Iginla.. Elias.. Perry.. Getzlaf.. Ribeiro.. Lupol.. Hartnell.. PM Bouchard.. Jordan Staal.. Zajac.. Clowe.. Weiss.. Backstrom.. Howard..

Seems like we’re always just off when it comes to timing..

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jul 2, 2011 7:03 PM EDT reply actions

i think the “superstar” we’re all waiting for is coming in the form of Huberdeau

As much as I love Crosby I’m realistic to the fact that he’d never sign here. I mean I hope I’m wrong but still..
