Winnipeg Jets release Logo & Wordmarks
The reborn Winnipeg Jets finally got around to letting the world in on what has to be the most-anticipated hockey logo unveiling in at least a dozen years (images above courtesy of the club). They certainly bear no resemblance to the former Atlanta Thrashers' collection of up-and-down designs.
Poll and more after the jump...
Can't say I'm too personally blown away; blame it on the sheer awesomeness - and memories of a few bygone years - of this classic coat-of-arms in all its aggressive goodness:
I'll reserve full judgement until the unis are revealed. Call it a work in progress. Full a visual list of the Jets' NHL uniform history check out the Hockey Uniform Database. More coverage from the hometown Arctic Ice Hockey here.

Should’ve just have brought back the old logo to make the fan’s happy; so far, not a lot of people are happy about them.
Now show us our new road whites already!!

I would have been very happy. Unfortunately I’m not the droid they’re looking for.

Dont think it would have made sense for them to keep the old stuff personally, from a money income point of view. Everyone would just wear their old jerseys. now if they have the old jersey as a 3rd or something then sure.
Btw, I love how they just had to incorporate the leaf into every single design, ya know because we all forgot they were in canada afterall..

Understood completely from the financial aspect. Hard not to pine for the good old days.

It’s true. Even though they relented and used the old name, they’re really trying to create a new brand. That’s at least part of the reason they’re not retiring the retired old Jets’ numbers.

I don’t see why the NHL just doesn’t switch out the Jets history from the Coyotes. Much like what happened in the NFL between the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens. Have the Jets history up to the move from Phoenix, make the Coyotes history start from their inception in Arizona, and make the Thrashers like a defunct club.

The City of Cleveland sued in court the right to own the name and history of the Browns after Modell and the Ravens moved to Baltimore. And this was long before they got a second born Cleveland Browns organization.

I kinda like the one on the top right hand corner. The big one on the left seems atrocious to me.
A lil thunder and a lil lightning is what the Cats are going to bring this year.
I agree with the top right. Something about it just looks classy to me. Even the written name looks decent. But the plane in the circle looks like something create for the old Sega 2KSports hockey.

The wordmark looks good, the primary is ehh. The 4, now five circle logos in the league just dont look good on jerseys except maybe on these.
They better hope the jersey is spectacular.

Clarification:
I never mentioned the Panthers had a – new – road white sweater. There have been rumors stating no changes, and those stating minimal changes (sans piping?).
Litter Box Cats - Your tarp-free Florida Panthers Colossus
Don’t remember because it was a while back, but I think I remember seeing comments on Facebook from the Panthers saying that they are gonna have new road jersey’s, sans piping. Also remember Santos saying that after the Press Conference via GR.

Yes. It’s the same sweater without the piping. I think they should leave it on the sleeves because it looks good there, but it’s no great loss on the front.

wow! they made a great logo for when they move to Kansas!
Yes they would be in KC, but nearby Wichita claims itself as the air capital of the world :)
don't be a hater
you need to get informed. Winnipeg just sold out 5 years worth off season tickets in 3 days (unheard of) and have 8k people on a waiting list. KC couldn’t even draw a 50% capacity crowd at the most recent NHL exhibition game played there despite knowing a large crowd would improve their chances as a future NHL market. Don’t hate on the Canadian teams like they hate on us. Be the bigger person and get your facts straight. All KC has is an arena, the people there don’t want hockey and nobody seems interested in owning a team there especially given the economy right now.
Too much white space. Enlarge the maple leaf and it would be fine.

enlarging the maple leaf might cause a problem from Toronto

True, I guess there isn’t much that can be done then…

The Leafs had to give their OK on the design but I’m sure they did based on the primary leaf being covered by the Jet. I have a feeling they would not have be OK with the crossed stick logo that’s going on the shoulders as the main logo.

Meh
I don’t like the logo but I don’t hate it either. It’s clever, clean, but that’s it for me. I know they are establishing a new identity but it would be great to have a 3rd jersey much like their old design. Just to give the sense that the team never left much like it never left the hearts of it’s fans. PR guy right here Winnipeg, add some spice to your boring PR.

Typed up my response and before I clicked post read this one. I sweat the “meh” and first sentence were almost identical lol. It’s not terrible but it doesn’t blow me away. I completely understand why they wanted to establish a new identity (*cough*money, new jersey sales*cough*) but it’s hard when the old Jets logo is so well known (not to mention designed). I’ll also reserve complete judgement until I see them on the uniforms

I think the logos will look better once they are on a jersey and are in living color. They look a little flat presented like this but so would a lot of other logos. The logo on the top right is the shoulder patch from what I’ve heard. I can see the wordmark maybe being a third jersey. I think they could have done a little more with the primary logo but overall it’s decent. Wonder if the home jersey is going to be blue or red. I’m guessing blue.
Based solely upon your recent record I will agree ;)

Most likely blue. Looking at the rest of the division, FLA, WAS, and CAR all have a primarily red uniform with TB now switching to blue. As for the NHL in total there are 11 teams with Red home unis and 9 with blue unis.

They are only in the SE one more season so I don’t think what FL, Wash and Caro are wearing is a factor. I’m guessing blue because parts of the MTS Centre got painted blue and silver this week not red. :) Maybe they will sport a red third at some point although most fans in Winnipeg are going to want one of the old school jersey’s as a third.
Maple Leaf is the new cowbell. It needs more maple leaf!
I like the color scheme. I will withhold judgement until I see the uniforms, but in general I like the designs. My only probelms with them are personal/weird:
- Maybe I’ve played too many video games, but the maple leaf behind the jet on the big logo makes it look like it is in the process of exploding.
- Isn’t the F-16 American-made? I know it’s stylized, but the design screams “falcon”. According to wikipedia, Canada doesn’t even fly them.
- On the lower-right logo, the maple leaf between the T and S makes me read it as an apostrpohe. (this seems like one of those things that once you see, you can’t unsee, so apologies in advance). Jet’s what? The Jet’s what?!?
I really like the logo in the upper-right. It’s just a little busy but I like everything else about it.
The jet on the logo is not a replica of anything it’s just a generic jet. There are elements of both an F-16 and F-18 though.
I wasn’t going to say anything (since I need to have my eyes checked). But the tail on the plane in that logo is definitely not a CF-18. Eh. It’s still a nice logo. Can’t wait to see it in person, hopefully on the losing end of a shutout.

I don’t know shite about planes just repeating what was said about the jet in the presser.
They are saying it’s CF-18 but it does look pretty generic to me.
just kidding about your eyes by the way. that leaf is pretty big though… :)

Really is too bad
It isn’t built in Atlanta.
The Florida Panthers have become Chicago's retirement home. This is oddly fitting.

Wonder if the home jersey will be navy blue like the logo or maybe a powder blue. The logo design they went with is pretty close to replicas of the RCAF Flyers who played in the 1948 olympics. The Moose wore a tribute uniform to that team in 2008 and the jersey was powder blue. I figure they will either wear navy jerseys with red pants or powder blue jerseys with navy pants. Hopefully they wont wear navy and navy. I hated that all dark blue look on the panthers.
Another baby blue like the Penguins/Panthers 3rd jerseys? I wish that trend would just die already…
by Chris S Roberts on Jul 24, 2011 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions
Right. Powder blues belong to baseball teams from the 70’s and 80’s, the Penguins since they did use to wear that, and the San Diego Chargers.

My guess is it’s going to be dark blue. Baby blue is not one of the Jets official colors from what I gather. Just a little supposition on my part based on the look of the ’48 Olympic replicas the Moose sported a few years ago. Those unis had a lot to do with the look they went with and according to Chipman helped him decide to call the team Jets again. he seems pretty big on the Winnipeg – Canadian air force connection.
