2011 NHL / Florida Panthers UFA Day 3 - Live Open Thread
This will be the final UFA weekend Open Thread - understandably - as clubs begin to wind down, publicly, for the summer. Hard to believe the Panthers could make many further acquisitions until training camp, but stranger events have occurred. Now that Matt Bradley is IN and Tomas Vokoun is OUT, look for re-signings of current RFAs such as Shawn Matthias and Mike Santorelli, likely with muted fanfare. Anyway, the soapbox is yours...

all i want for today
santorelli locked up for 2 or 3 years at a reasonable price [2 mil?], gudbranson locked up on an ELC, and stamkos signed to an insane offer sheet. is this too much to ask?!

2year 4.5mil contract for santo would be nice.. the new team will make it interesting to see who competes for a spot. Who decides to step up and take a spot and who could fall in the system and potentially be used as trade bait.
I love Matthias but the way things are looking and as much as his stock has dropped I’m predicting him being packaged in some kind of future trade depending on if he steps up or not.

donny, could you imagine having him on our team? how amazing would that be. i know how truly unrealistic it is, but imagine our current panthers team with stamkos and our best rookies … it’d be hard to imagine us not immediately contending for a playoff spot.
truthfully, im more realistically excited to totally fuck tampa cap-wise with an offer sheet.

Oh I could imagine it, but it’s just not reality, as you stated. Yzerman will match any offer.

Poison Pill! Poison Pill!
All I would love to see is Tallon insert a poison pill into an offer sheet to screw over Tampa. ;)

Yeah, for fun, but the fallout would resonate for a very long time among the GM community. Just not necessary to do it.

supposidly they offered him a 6yr deal worth 7.5mil average.. I’d say throw him an offer for about 8.5-9mil average over 8 years, we wont get him because theyll match it, but it sure would drive up the price.. unfortunately they didnt retain gagne so that gives them more room to work with. They do however have hedman to resign next year and he’ll be getting anywhere between 6 or 7 a year.. which would hurt them when it comes to signing any free agents next year because theyd be close to the cap..
this also depends on how much longer st louis has in him..

Keep in mind the CBA expires in a year, which will affect everything.

No need to yet, as they’ve been “qualified”.

Interesting the Bradley signing has not been noted at CapGeek or Elite Prospects as yet. Usually pretty quick on the draw.

Not expecting him to play much in Florida.

he’s an nhler.. maybe not a 20 goal scorer like our other signings but hes one of those guys who plays with heart, and sticks up for his team.

Agreed
He’ll help the Rampage a lot.

dont think he’ll be in the ahl at all.. and im pretty sure he has a 1way deal
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jul 3, 2011 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions
He won’t be in the AHL. Bradley is a character guy, a gritty 4th liner who was brought in as a locker room boost and a little bit of an enforcer. That type of player is welcome here with the roster changes, as you need these types of players behind the scenes to keep the team fabric closely knit. The fact that Tallon and Santos made it a point to get a guy like Bradley shows me a lot more than any of the other acquisitions do about how well they know what a winning formula is.
Exactly, Tallon already made his SA moves with Yonkman and Rallo. Bradley is almost assured a spot unless he pulls a Grabner in camp

4 first rounders sounds like too much a bounty for any player.
Just looking at Brian Burke’s face of indigestion at the draft when the B’s took Dougie Hamilton? Am I the only one who thinks the Leafs got killed on that deal(overall #2/Seguin and #9 for Phil Kessel)??
Is Stamkos worth double that?
CFS93
looking at our current team, the addition of stamkos would only make us that much better.. realistically i see us making anywhere between 85-93 points this year.. which would put us in the middle of the pack. if not in the playoffs.. which would mean we’d pick anywhere from 14-30.. id say a mid to late round pick x4 is worth a 50goal scorer 100 point getter anyday..
the only thing in question is goaltending, but im thinking theo is going to have an awesome come back year.

Really great article.
The Pants are definitely looking like a team capable of seeing the playoffs, and I’m incredibly happy for them.
One thing I have to disagree with though… Dude’s comments about Canadian fans is just inaccurate. The Panthers have been my favourite team in the East since I was a little kid, and I really want to see hockey spread throughout the States and the world. Associating the views of TSN’s idiotic panel of poorly-dressed monkeys to the opinion of Canada at large is just wrong. Canadians hate TSN. They just suck in every conceivable way. The only real consensus here is that there ought to be more teams north of the border, but we did get that wish when Atlanta collapsed. I think we’ll be beyond content with 8 teams, next of which being in Hamilton or Quebec, but that’s about all we need. Hell, even 7 is good enough.

"idiotic panel of poorly-dressed monkeys"
If anything deserves a rec, that’s it right there.
I completely agree. TSN does not represent the Canadian fanbase, and I know a lot of Habs, Sens, Leafs, Flames, Oil and Nucks fans (sorry Jets, too new) who are really knowledgeable, really passionate hockey fans who could put the TSN goons to shame.
That being said, I know tons of American fans who are exactly the same. That’s one thing to take away from being an NHL fan: the NHL fans take their sport VERY seriously.
One thing I don’t want us to be is the Montreal Expos. I saw Olympic Stadium when they were there on a gameday and it was a ghost town.

SSE president & COO Michael Yormark. "Phones have been ringing since yesterday afternoon and we have a full staff in the office throughout the holiday weekend. So I would encourage fans to buy tickets now, as current prices will beheld until July 15."
YORMARK TAKE NOTE: its not your marketing and crazy deals that will bring fans in, it is tallon and co. doing their job and BUILDING A TEAM.

(which isnt completly a bad thing, since it would require a prospect to be outperforming one of our new vets, but with all the skillz in the system, somethings gotta give)
I dont think any of them will be.. since flash seems to be better and i doubt hed risk his own health or career by going of his meds he’ll have a great year..
Bergenheim might be the one people get hyped about and will become disappointed.. hes a decent player and can contriubute 15g 30+ points.. the playoffs would be where to watch him.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jul 3, 2011 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Down…or is it up?…goes Bergfors to Nashville.
Litter Box Cats - Your tarp-free Florida Panthers Colossus
A good change of scenery for him in the West, where players will get benched if they’re slackers. Bergy went for super cheap, probably a couple million less than what he wanted from the Panthers. Oversold himself just as bad as Vokoun.
by Chris S Roberts on Jul 3, 2011 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions
I liked him but agree with the slacking.. hope he has a come back year.
Wish we could have brought sammy back though :/
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jul 3, 2011 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions
I really wanted Sammy back as well, but that was before Tallon signed my wildest dreams. Samsonov just wouldn’t have fit in anymore, got to leave some spaces for the young guys like Dadonov and others

No, and that’s the beauty of it all. For the first time in a long time, EVERYONE will have to perform all camp and preseason and season to stay out of the press box, AHL or waiver wire.
Any surprises so far in who hasn't been taken?
I’m still kind of surprised that Arnott and Kaberle haven’t found new homes yet (I thought Arnott might have been a Tallon target). Any others that should have been picked up but haven’t?
I heard rumblings about McCabe and CBJ, but didn’t seem substantial at the time. Who knows.

Thanks for inadvertantly reminding me that we don't have most of your cereal brands in Canada.
But we do have Peanut Butter Puffins. So there’s that.

I'm in Toronto.
I used to live in Sarnia, right on the Michigan border. I’d go over and see the weirdest thing. Like. Flintstones cereal. And about 80 million different kinds of Cheerios. It’s like, every normal cereal we have here (Froot Loops, Frosted Flakes, Corn Pops) has some kind of bizarre variation in the US. And we don’t have like… Booberry, Count Chocula, anything like that.
