Whether people agree with [Tallon’s] philosophy or not, he’ll hand a vastly improved group over to new head coach Kevin Dineen that also includes Kris Versteeg and puck- moving defenseman Brian Campbell. All in all, character guys have been added to a group that includes a talented young core that will help form some potent line combinations next season.

With 7 guys signed and Alzner OTW as well, I can see them shipping Green off. They’re not likely to move out a forward when they have 8 D signed. Green and Wideman are both .5 point/game players, but Wideman is cheaper by $1.3mil or so. Carlson was at .45 points/game in his first full season last year. Yeah, I can see that making Green and his $5.25 million salary expendable.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jul 6, 2011 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

not going to happen, Shero is too smart for that. however, a certain canadian marketplace who wants to make a splash no matter how stupid a move…. Ding Ding Ding Winnipeg or Toronto are going to be the final destination.

by Hawkseye on Jul 6, 2011 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

itd be a great move for both teams, pitt picks up a high scoring defenseman to add even more pressure on teams and take a little off of crosby, as well as a good wing to play along side of crosby.

malkin was also injured last year but at the same time hed be the center for ovie, the russian connection and the fact that they went 1 and 2 in their draft would naturally be something to bring them together, knock backstrom down to second line center and it makes their team that much more dangerous

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jul 6, 2011 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

by Hawkseye on Jul 6, 2011 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Dont forget they needed neither malkin or crosby to make the playoffs. Why put cancer in your lockerroom? The likely places are the canadien markets who always are sucker for the flashy and cancer.. which are Winnipeg and Toronto.

Vancouver Sun

from Ian MacIntyre:

We don’t mean to pick only on Tallon, who did an excellent job as Chicago’s previous GM and never got the credit he deserved for the Blackhawks’ 2010 Stanley Cup. But toss in has-been goalie Jose Theodore and some guy named Marcel Goc and the Panthers spent over $100 million in about a week. Not many people besides Gary Bettman think the Florida franchise is worth that.

But wait!

New York Ranger GM Glen Sather spent $60 million on one player, Brad Richards, and is being hailed as the free-agent sweepstakes winner. Just like when he signed Wade Redden and Chris Drury and Scott Gomez and Bobby Holik and. . .

LOL Haters always hate. How much did Vancouver spend on Luongo alone? That’s working out great isn’t it?

why dont they bring up the caps expensive backstrom, semin, and ovi line . How has that worked out for the caps in the playoffs…

Heck, you can even bring up the semin’s line in the playoffs. most expensive line did nothing when it mattered.

Richards, who will really be paid $57 million for the next six years as the Rangers circumvent the salary cap, is a fine playmaker.

They say teams like florida is why there will be a lockout next year… the reality of it is, its teams like NY, Washington etc that there will be a lockout next year.. seriously? its obvious what NY did with richards in their deal completely front loading it and giving him next to nothing when hes 38-39-40.. even if he retires because of the fact that hes only making 1mil those years it reduces any cap hit he may have instead of being 12 mil theyre looking at only 6 which any team can work around im sure.. well other than philly..

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jul 6, 2011 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. DId we overspend…yes but just a touch to try and hit the floor. We did not go crazy as people make it sound. People are just looking at the monetary figure and not the number of years of the number of players signed. sigh

Trinidaddy

by trinidaddy on Jul 6, 2011 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

There are a LOT of reasons we’re approaching another lockout, and it’s mainly due to the board of governors increasing the cap several times in the last several years to ridiculous levels (based on league-wide market conditions in the midst of a recession) and constant attempts by teams/GMs to circumvent the existing CBA’s intentions through KovyKontracts.

The only reason Tallon spent like he did was because he had to reach a floor figure that is inflated to a level it shouldn’t be. Do you think he was personally excited to sign Sean Bergenheim to a deal worth almost $3 million a season? I sure don’t.

by Ryan Meier on Jul 6, 2011 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

The BoG isn’t raising the cap level. The CBA is, as its based on league revenue.

by MrOmnipotent on Jul 6, 2011 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

And the PA had the option of raising the cap due to the revenue levels.

very convoluted.

We’ll let the season speak for itself. I can’t wait for it to start and see where the Cats are in the standings come December.

by Ryan Meier on Jul 6, 2011 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

that might be the deciding factore.. since we always start slow and it bites us in the ass towards the end.. if we can have a strong oct/nov and dec to start the season we’ll be in mighty fine shape

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jul 6, 2011 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

True, but the new management that has their foot on the pedal will ensure a full season’s worth of effort is put in or else. Now THAT is refreshing :)

I’m breaking it down by division, Home/Away, Home/away streak, standings(games against 1-10, 11-20, 21-30), games against playoff/non playoff teams 9 (and streaks)

if you wanted to get really technical too you could do it on the players, average games / goals / assists / points per game over the previous 3 years. to determine the possibilities for this year, matching those numbers against the teams average from last year to see if theres any improvement.

Anyone notice in Fialkov’s line combinations, he put five guys on the penalty kills each? Facepalm there if there ever was one. Really wish the Sentinel had a true hockey writer. Hell, the Baltimore Sun article is by Mike Bernandino, a Sentinel writer I believe, or at least was.

No, you guys don’t get what I’m criticizing. Its not Fialkov I am criticizing. I give him props for tryin to learn the game, as I will help anyone with that. I’m criticizing the papers for putting someone who had no inkling previously about the sport, as the beat writer. Not with the Panthers, but with other sports, you see people being groomed to eventually take over by writing in the blogs or assisting with stories. Not just “You want a job? Here. Go write about hockey. No one cares about hockey anyways” type of management.

If the Panthers want to be taken seriously again with tv sponsors, they’re gonna need to get someone like Jiggs and Potvin to do broadcasts again.
