Panthers Welcome Back Ryan Carter
In the fourth move of the day, the Florida Panthers have finally resigned UFA Ryan Carter to a one year, two-way contract. Carter was acquired in the trade for Cory Stillman from the Carolina Hurricanes last March and brought unmatched intensity and energy to the horrid post-deadline Panthers. In 12 games with the Panthers (Carter missed some time with the Panthers while rehabbing a back injury) Ryan put up 3 points (2G/1A) and finished the season a +3. The Panthers were the center's third team last season, Carter started out with the Anaheim Ducks, then moved to the Hurricanes before ending up in Florida. With some welcomed stability on his side, Look for Carter to challenge Shawn Matthias for the role of 4th line center.
And who could forget...

I just want to say that I think Carter will have the biggest jump in points of any player on the team.
Oh by far, I’m waiting for Matthias to be traded away now for maybe good pick or a roster wing maybe.

I’ve been saying in other threads that I’m also just waiting for the tweet to come in that says Matthias has been traded. He doesn’t have the opportunity here anymore to play decent minutes, and he should be given the opportunity somewhere else because he works hard and he’s a good kid… It’s just that he may not be in TallonCat’s plans.
However, I feel like his stock has dropped a bit this past season due to injuries and below average offensive numbers… If we get anything in return I see it being a midround pick (maybe 4th round) or a solid AHLer/prospect. But I’d like to still think we can get a proven winger or 2nd or 3rd round pick for him.
I think it was either Carter or Mathias. I also doubt Mathias will be back. Everyone is being signed by Gund. I wonder if that will stop him from attending the prospects camp next week?

No, players don’t need to be signed to come to development camps or training camps or to play in preseason games. It’s almost always in a player’s best interest to go to these things, anyway, even if they end up with another team eventually.

Only exception – to my knowledge – is NCAA players are not eligible to play in pre-season or scrimmage games against other clubs if unsigned. Please correct me on this if I am wrong…
