More on Panthers' Esposito, Shirokov, and Seabrook
The Panthers made some interesting moves today, acquiring Angelo Esposito (ranked 13 on the Jets/Thrashers Hockey's Future page), Sergei Shirokov (ranked 3rd on the Canucks HF page), and Keith Seabrook (7th on Calgary's HF page) to help build depth on the roster and have a genuine competition come training camp for all 23 roster spots. Here's a bit more information on the players acquired Saturday.
After the jump, we'll begin with Esposito...
Angelo Esposito, drafted 20th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2007, is described as an excellent playmaker, and one of the most talented players to come out of the QMJHL in years. However, two serious knee injuries and consistency issues have held the former The Michel Bergeron Trophy winner (awarded to the Offensive Rookie of the Year in the QMJHL) back in the AHL. He has the talent to be a first line winger in the NHL, but he's going to have work to achieve that potential.

Sergei Shirokov, drafted 103rd overall in 2006 by Vancouver Canucks, like Mike Duco, is undersized at 5'10". However unlike Duco, who plays a very aggressive, enforcer role, Shirokov is more of an offensive player. The Canucks scouting staff loves his skating, despite Shirokov not being very fast. If Tallon can convince Shirokov to come to play in North America, he could be a nice potential second line winger in the future.

Keith Seabrook (brother of the Blackhawks' Brent) is an offensive defensemen, drafted 52nd overall in 2006 by the Washington Capitals. Seabrook comes to Florida with great passing skills and the ability to quarterback a powerplay, but he doesn't appear to bring much upside outside of a 5th or 6th defensemen and powerplay specialist.

I’m startin to think, Tallon is tryin to do Dudley’s old routine of throwing names are a dart board and seeing which ones stick. Just making trades, for the fun of the trade.
You saw a future in FLA with McArdle, Duco, and Henry?

these guys have a total of 8 games. None will be stars but neither will the guys we traded. Just building depth.
Seriously Turtle, Smoke More Weed
Shirokov (if we ever see him) has more of a future then those guys had combined. Thats not a knock on Ken Mike of Jordan, but Shirokov would have cost a lot more if it weren’t for his KHL deal.

Actually, my comments has nothing to do with the players involved. Its about how seven years ago, people were hating on Dudley for doing this type of thing, while building the Panthers for a post lockout roster. But six years of losing have suddenly made it ok. And most of the things I see Tallon doing here in Florida, I see being influenced by his time with Dudley in Chicago. Tallon was a freakin commentator for years, 16 to be precise. He didn’t have the managerial experience before Chicago. But he was surrounded by talented asistants and advisors who did have experience, and he’s learned from them.

So?
The best in the league surround themselves with good people. I don’t see what’s wrong with that, other than glory going to Tallon (Though he shares it with everyone it seems).

The problem is, it took 7 years for Panther fans to accept what was being then, and if it doesn’t work out this time (hypothetically, as I like most, not all, of what has been done), how long will we have to wait again? This is what scares me.

Perhaps we can wait to see. No choice otherwise.

Stocking the farm team. No room for Duco and McArdle here anymore with guys like Matt Bradley and Ryan Carter around.

Seabrook looked really really bad at development camp right before he was traded—but I still hope he can turn things around.
Seems to be the case around those in the know. Hopefully the kick of a trade will do some good.
