Your Take: Panthers' Matthias signs 2-year deal
Now that it's official, what's your word on the "two-way/one-way" contract accepted by center Shawn Matthias? From OFP:
"The biggest hurdle to getting a deal done was getting Matthias to agree to a two-way deal, meaning the Panthers can send Matthias to the minors and pay him considerably less than his NHL salary of $800,000. Matthias got a two-way deal for 2011-12, but his 2012-13 pact is one-way specific."
A wise move by the club in guaranteeing future earnings (in 2012-13) based upon 36 points in 126 career NHL games? Or given the proper opportunity, is the kid ready to blow up offensively?

Everyone knows that Dadnov will most likely take a spot, so in my opinion the final spot will really be between Matty and Howden/Possibly Huberdeau.
- Go Panthers -
Those already more or less guaranteed spots:
Weiss
Santorelli
Goc
Dadonov’s a winger, while Fleischmann can play center. Agreed on Howden/Huberdeau (tho very much long shots with this group), and Steve Reinprecht is potentially still lurking…

I don’t see Reinprecht making the team unless it’s as the 13th forward. Then again, maybe he’ll come out kicking ass. I guess we’ll have a better idea next week.
Matty’s got a shot, but yeah, they need the flexibility to send him down this year. I like it.

I see this as a fight between Carter and Matty, and honestly I see Carter getting it. In his limited games last year, he not only played a physical energy role (which would go good with Bradley and Skillez) but also scored some goals when no one else could.
Matty’s coming off an injury.

He got a bad rap last year b/c Deboer didn’t like him. Well nobody liked Deboer. And the team still sucked after Rhino left. I have always been a fan of his, since back in his days with Colorado. He was part of that amazing Cup team with Sakic, Roy, Bourque, the big guys. He doesn’t get nearly the respect he deserves here in FL imho.

Stillman is official. Tallon announced him as Player Development Assistant to Skrudland. No link, saw it on Facebook.

Matthias too young
I personally think the 2 way is a good move. He could develop and play better next year and they won’t be bond to his salary.
The argument against it, though, says that because he’s now guaranteed a certain (higher) salary in 2012-13 there’s less “incentive” to strive for a better performance. In theory; this is not an assumption at all.
