Panthers Roster Cut to 28, Repik and Reinprecht on Waivers

Three more players were cut and one put on the injured reserve list to bring the Cats' pre-season roster to 28. With these cuts, the team inches closer to the opening night 22 man roster they'll be carrying into the season. Scott Clemmensen was placed on injured reserve after undergoing a procedure on his knee this morning. He will miss up to 8 weeks while recovering. In the meantime, Jacob Markstrom and Tyler Plante will compete for the second Panthers goalie spot to start the season.

Defenseman Colby Robak was sent to the San Antonio Rampage a day after General Manager Dale Tallon praised his work in camp. Forwards Steven Reinprecht and Michal Repik were both placed on waivers in advance of being assigned to the Rampage. Reinprecht was waived in December of last year and eventually loaned to Adler Mannheim in Germany, while Repik had a stronger showing in camp than usual, but not as strong as Evgeny Dadonov or Jack Skille, who has started to show some offensive prowess as well as defensive ability.

Star-divide

The Panthers have 6 more cuts to make before arriving at the opening night roster: 4 forwards, 1 defenseman, 1 goalie. Expect to see a lot of bubble players in the next two games, including the two prospect goaltenders. The current camp roster:

Tomorrow at the game, I’ll mainly be looking out for Huberdeau, as well as Matthias, Carter, and Kennedy, to show why they deserve a spot on the roster. I honestly think that Huberdeau will steal it away from all of them, despite the lack of size. I think that Howden will be sent back to juniors because of the injury, and its unfortunate, because he might be ready right now to crack the lineup. He’ll be ready next year for sure.

I am going to predict these cuts: Howden, Matthias, Carter, Skille, Kostka, and Markstrom

by Colt1235 on Sep 26, 2011 9:11 PM EDT reply actions

I’m with you on Markstrom. I think Plante stays. Kostka’s gone for sure, unless there’s something they don’t like going on with Kuli or Ellerby that we don’t know about. I think Gudbranson stays.

For the forwards, I’m almost convinced that Kennedy has basically made the team. And I think Huberdeau has a really good shot. And I think Dadonov makes the cut. The rest, I’m not sure.

Agree completely 100%. Carters a good energy line player, wouldn’t mind keeping him on the roster for games when we play tough teams. Same goes with Skille, and he’s having a good camp so he’ll make the team also.

Yes he can, he just has to clear waivers. A one-way contract just means that if he gets sent down, he still gets paid the same as if he was playing here. Like Wade Redden. Same with Reinprecht, as Murph says. Unless someone claims him, the Panthers will be paying him $2mil+ to play in the AHL or Europe or wherever he ends up.

The issue is re-entry waivers. They won’t want to send Ellerby down because they won’t be able to recall him without re-entry waivers and at just over $400k, he’d be a bargain to some team needing a 6th D-man. So they’re not sending him anywhere unless they’re giving up on him, in which case they might try to trade him first.

As for Reinprecht, they may be hoping someone grabs him off the waiver wire. They might even be willing to put him on re-entry waivers if someone will take him for half salary since it’s the last year of his contract and they have to pay him anyway.

Just a “hunch” here.. but I say Huberdeau is going back to juniors for another season due to the fact that he’ll be killed in a real NHL game and management want him to be around 190 or so.

I just can’t see how Repik makes it past the Jets. He’s young, fills a serious deficiency for them, he’s inexpensive, and he easily slots in as one of their top offensive players.

Culled more or less from the CBA and Wiki via NHL Arena:

Before November 1st of the NHL season, the reverse standings of the previous year determine the order. For example, the Edmonton Oilers had the first chance to pick any player waived prior to November 1st, 2010 because they finished last in the standings in 2009-10.

After November 1st, the order is determined by reverse standings of the current year (at the time the player is placed on waivers). The lowest team in the standings putting a claim on a player is guaranteed to get that player.

Litter Box Cats - Your tarp-free Florida Panthers Colossus

So as things currently stand, EDM and COL have (until November 1st) the 1-2 option on anyone FLA sends to waivers.

Yes I'm aware, but that doesn't say that the waiving team can claim the player.

Or at least, it wouldn’t make sense to allow them to do that to send their player to the AHL (Could you pull them back to your NHL squad? Probably. But to get a guy to the AHL, you need the player to clear.)

No and no. All 29 of the other teams have priority in the order stated. If any one team claims him then they can put him on their NHL roster. If two teams claim, then the one higher in the priority list can put him on their NHL roster. If no teams claim, then you can send the player to the AHL.

No. It goes without saying that you can’t waiver claim your own players.

If you could, then the Isles never could have taken Grabner. They finished two spots ahead of us two seasons ago.

The only priority the waiving team gets is if we were to waive a player to send to the AHL and someone picked him up, if that team waived him again later int he season and we were the only team to put in a claim, we could then send him to the AHL without him clearing waivers again.

Trade Priority, As Well

The original team also gets priority if the claiming team tries to trade the claimed player.

Example: Isles claim Repik, Jets want to trade a 3rd for him. Isles must first offer that same deal to the Panthers before finalizing the deal.

That’s only within the first 30 days he is with claiming team. After 30 days, he can be sent to minors, but must clear waivers again, and original team has no right of first choice.

by MrOmnipotent on Sep 27, 2011 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

The difference is that Grabner came in a trade and Repik has been in the organization for a while. He’s been up at various times in the last two seasons and never stuck. Grabner had one bad training camp and they tried to send him to the AHL and it failed. Repik has had three waiver-free seasons of shuttling between here and Rochester already and though I thought he looked improved from last year, he’s getting outplayed by Skille and Kennedy and that makes him expendable if he gets picked off waivers. Honestly, Hazen might already be in line to be a call-up before Repik. All of the acquisitions were about not only replacing the Cory Stillmans on the team, but also forcing these kids like Repik and Matthias to produce or go to the minors (or get picked off the wire). Frolik had more upside than Skille or Repik and he got traded because he didn’t fit in with Tallon’s vision of the team. I have a feeling Repik is in that boat as well.

The Jets would be foolish not to take a long look at him, be we’re closing in on “project” status. As was noted earlier, he’s seen a lot of 3rd/4th line duty under DeBoer; given some offensive talent to work with he may yet blossom sooner than later.

He’s marginal at this point, which is why I don’t see the Islanders claiming him. However, the Jets are full of marginal at best players, and could use someone like Repik. They could throw him out there this year, protect him a bit with offensive-zone starts, and see what happens.

Given the proper environment, I think Repik can generate offense.

Everyone’s gotta remember how hard it is for a rookie defenseman in the NHL. We need to have some patience; the raw talent in Guds is gushing, but he just needs game time, coaching and mentoring. He is going to end up as a cornerstone defenseman for this franchise for years to come… but he’s gotta get through his first two seasons, which are generally the rockiest.

by Ryan Meier on Sep 27, 2011 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d be perfectly willing to give him a roster spot, he just needs to play 60-70 games for it to be a good rookie season. Just dont want him to have a bad game, get pressbox’d and think its his fault. Gotta ride it out like Kulikov (and Ellerby) did.

Something also to keep in mind for any non-Panther fans here. Some of Tallon’s moves are questionable, yes, but there’s been a country club atmosphere and a losing culture here that he’s trying to get rid of. And some of his bizarre on the surface moves are part of that. Yes, he’s gotten rid of some talented players, but at the same time there’s a really insidious culture of losing here that needs to end. And the guys who were part of that are being weeded out.

I don’t know. I got here in 2006, and that team just wasn’t good enough. It was too many end of their career vets (Roberts, Gratton, Gelinas, Belfour, Stumpel) a few kids heading into their peak years (Weiss, Horton), a couple overachievers (Jokinen, Stumpel) and a bunch of people who would never make another NHL team’s roster (Kolnik, Kwiatkowski, Mezei). JM really blew it hitching his season on Nieuwendyk, Bertuzzi and Auld. Auld ended up spending the second half of the season on the bench, Nieuwy played 7 games, got hurt and retired and Bert played 14 games before being hurt most of the season and traded to the Wings for Matthias. The rest of those guys just weren’t quite good enough to get it done.

The option remains for replacing Clemmer through free agency; not much to work with but someone like 28 year-old Pascal Leclaire remains a potentially affordable pickup if the Cats have given up on Scotty.

In such a case, send Clemmensen (who has a year remaining under contract, albeit on a one-way) to San Antonio to work with Markstrom. Plante presumably isn’t in the long-term plans anyway.

That's one very ugly Goalie combo

Leclaire and Thedore. The injury to Clem isn’t good.

I said it before in a comment a couple of weeks ago that I expect Theodore to play poorly and that Clem would take over the starting goalie start sometime in late November or December. My prediction about Theodore not doing the job still stands but now I don’t know what Florida can do to fix the mess he’ll get them into. The pool of available journeyman goalies is hardly inspiring and Markstrom probably needs more time in the minors. Plante I don’t know enough about.

Might as well trade for Rick DiPietro. I mean, I like the guy (I used to watch him play in Syracuse when he was a CBJ prospect), but he gets hurt, a lot. We’d be better off trying to pry Nabokov away from the Isles if we’re going to go there, and I don’t think we will unless Plante can’t hack it as the backup.

A possibility though kind of slim

How about Big Ben Bishop? The Blues have three goalies in camp and he’s the least likely to make the roster. Bishop has been in the minors by the Blues.

Besides his size, the one reason i remember Bishop, is that he shutout Florida 3 years ago for 45-50 minutes of hockey till he got hurt and another goalie was put in to finish.

I wouldnt be opposed to Bishop. If we do decide to pick up a goalie let it be through waivers rather than signing/trade (unless theres a 2-way, one year deal in the works)

I’m putting here for reflection later on in the season…. #14 Tomas [Fleischmann] is getting a 40G season.

You’d be opposed to a near league minimum, one way deal that doesn’t include a no-movement clause? You can still send the guy down or overseas.

I’m not upset over Repik. He’s had some chances here and hasn’t been able to stick.
He has some skill but I just don’t see the finishing ability as of yet. He wasn’t a big goal scorer at the AHL level either. To me he is a player the Panthers don’t really need anymore, if he doesn’t get claimed great! put him in SA and see if he gets better but I think Repik himself would be better served by moving on to another organization.

That seems to be the consensus everywhere.

I think some people are afraid of another Grabner situation happening.
don’t think so. I think given time and the right opportunity Repik can help some team out but I don’t see him making the impact Grabner made last year.

by Todd Little on Sep 27, 2011 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Grabner he is not. At no point in his career has he ever been as touted as Grabner was.

by Ryan Meier on Sep 27, 2011 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly, the only reason we see Grabner and Repik in the same sentences is because NYI is in the mix.

That, and it’s not all that often a rookie is waived, picked up by another team, and goes on to be nominated for the Calder :)

That’s the plan. The only thing that might happen is Reinprecht’s agent finds him somewhere else to play and tries to get the Panthers to agree.

good

I’m really glad Repik cleared. He can hone his game in San Antonio and be a good injury call up. With the ice time he got with Panthers after the deadline he should be able to take it up a notch in the AHL. As for Reinprecht…I don’t know but Lost In Germany by King’s X is playing in my head.

Weiss

Could he be movin on? Only appeared in one game thus far. How bout this: Weiss and Jose for Cory Schneider?

by bearcat30 on Sep 27, 2011 4:38 PM EDT reply actions

The Sedins haven’t appeared in a pre-season game as of yet. They’re not going anywhere, Weiss isn’t going anywhere. There’s some bubble players to sift through.

man, lots of hype for Cory Schneider these days. It’s not hard to be a back up on a really good team and accumulate nice stats. I would not deal Weiss (or any top 6 guy) for Schneider. That’s the type of player you sign as a free agent or trade some picks for.
