Game Day Preview: Preseason Game 6 - Florida Panthers at Dallas Stars

Photo

Start Time: 8:30 PM
Radio: None
TV: None
Florida: 1-3-1
Dallas: 4-1-0
Pre-Season Series: 0-0-1

The final game of the pre-season is tonight. This is the final audition for a number of players including Ryan Carter, Erik Gudbranson, Jonathan Huberdeau, Tim Kennedy, Mike Kostka and Evgeny Dadonov. The remainder of the roster cuts will take place on Friday and the Cats will have a week until their opening game October 8 on Long Island to practice with a regular season sized roster. Injuries to Scott Clemmensen and Mike Santorelli have opened an extra couple of starting roster spots to younger players.

UPDATE: G Tyler Plante has been placed on waivers for reassignment to San Antonio.

Star-divide

Last meeting: The Stars and Panthers played an ugly, brawling, penalty-filled game on Tuesday night that included two fights (Versteeg vs. Goligoski and Matthias vs. Dillon), a 10-minute misconduct (Erik Gudbranson) and a game misconduct following a boarding major (Ryan Garbutt, on Tim Kennedy). The Panthers, down 3-1, came back to tie the game during the major penalty, but lost in overtime.

Notes: Michal Repik and Steven Reinprecht both cleared waivers on Tuesday. Repik was assigned to San Antonio while Reinprecht is still practicing with the Panthers.

Injuries: Scott Clemmensen (knee), IR, 9/26 (3-8 weeks); Mike Santorelli (shoulder), 9/27, 2 weeks; Ryan Carter (groin), day to day; Matt Bradley (virus), day to day; Scottie Upshall (hip), day to day;

Healthy Scratches: Stephen Weiss, Tomas Kopecky, Sean Bergenheim, Jason Garrison, Brian Campbell

Starting goaltenders: Jose Theodore will be the starting goaltender for Florida, backed up by Jacob Markstrom.

ha ha, i used to work with a guy who talked like that. Always put The in front of names and finished every sentence with “you know” Example “How about that save by the Jose Theodore…you know”.

guy had a weird accent, stuttered and was a complete jerk to boot. one of the most annoying people I’ve ever come across. my friends and I got some funny lines out of it but it did get old quick when you were hearing it every day.

So, your feeling sorry for the guy trumped your more murderous instincts, eh? Been there done that.

Thou art a better man than I, sir.

Id be MORE than happy...

With a 2 goals allowed night by Theo, and 1/1(goal/assist) from Huby….to along with a 4-2 Cats victory.

sounds good to me. a win would be nice going into the regular season

by Todd Little on Sep 29, 2011 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, anything above or beyond that would just be gravy, as far as I’m concerned.

Yeah. Tallon & Co. have until Sunday, I believe. But I’d rather not see it drag out into another Guds situation from last year, if ya know what I mean.

All other players on waivers yesterday cleared. Today’s waivers: Leighton (PHI); Plante (FLA);

OnFrozenPond George Richards
#FlaPanthers waive G Tyler Plante, presumably to send him to AHL San Antonio. Jacob Markstrom appears backup to Jose Theodore to start 11-12
OnFrozenPond George Richards
#FlaPanthers decision likely came down to Tues game v #Stars; Markstrom stopped 10 shots; Plante gave up 3 goals in second period

by Rob PKane McMahon on Sep 29, 2011 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Whatever the pundits say about him being better suited in the AHL, they told Markstrom and Plante they were competing for a backup role. What kind of message would that send to send him to SA anyways, even if he earned it.

I’d say give him a start or two while Clem is out. Roll the dice.

Maybe this will also give the Markstrom a true taste of the NHL. Even sitting on the bench and watching the NHL at full speed can help with his own timing. This isn’t Sweden or the AHL, watching the best play may really help Markstrom’s timing. This kid already has the desire to be the best in the world but this little stint up here for a few games should still help.

A lil thunder and a lil lightning is what the Cats are going to bring this year.

Let’s get it tonight cats! Hoping hubby proves he belongs here and Theo gets a lil better defense in front of him! He can make the big saves

by CatNipp on Sep 29, 2011 1:15 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

sometimes a baptism by fire is best. It may speed up his maturation process. the problem won’t be if Markstrom shows he isn’t ready in the few starts he may get, it will be if Theodore plays poorly while Clemmensen recovers.

Is there an over under for penalties for tonights game? I would love for the bad blood to continue.

Hey there, Dallas Stars fan here

Looking forward to the game tonight! Hope it’s another lively affair between the two teams.

I’ll be tweeting observations/updates throughout the game tonight for our readers over at DefendingBigD, and I try to answer questions people have as well (how does xx player look tonight? kind of stuff.)

Feel free to check out our Twitter widget at DBD where you can see the updates, or feel free to follow me on Twitter directly for tonight…I understand if you leave tomorrow ;)

We enjoyed having a few of you in our gameday thread the other night!

Followed! I won’t be home tonight and twitter is the easiest way to catch updates, so between you anyone else from here I have added and the Panthers own acct I should get plenty of info! thanks :]

Anyone know what both guys are wearing on their wrist in the picture?

I’m putting here for reflection later on in the season…. #14 Tomas [Fleischmann] is getting a 40G season.

SEVEN... TO... ONE...

I hope Markstrom grabs this by the balls… He can make the jump right now if he performs well in the coming weeks at practice. That job is up for grabs, period. Without goaltending, the spending spree this past summer was wasted (except for the fact that we HAD to spend just to get to the Cap floor).

If we are relying on Theodore, we are in serious trouble. Tallon needs to be scouring the waiver wire.

by VanMurph on Sep 29, 2011 11:11 PM EDT reply actions

The spending spree would have been wasted if we signed 1 year deals. Markstrom has 4 years to become totally awesome.

And they criticized the 4 year deals

Question ...

How many potential captains played in this one and how many sat out? The ability to rally the troops was not in evidence tonight, it seems.
