Panthers Preseason Goes Sour: Just Step Away From The Panic Button
I think it's safe to say the Florida Panthers preseason didn't exactly go as planned. 1-4-1 record, 29 goals against in 6 games, one injury in both the 'promising young center' and 'backup goalie who might end up playing 40 games' categories and a good whooping later, the team has got about a week to figure something out. Now besides the 7-1 romp the Dallas Stars handed us tonight the preseason hasn't gone terribly for the Cats, but you have a few reasons to be a bit concerned. This should be a healthy concern, not a sky-is-falling outlook on the regular season. Save the panic button for midseason, there is no need to hit it now. There is a solution that doesn't involve trading for a goalie. Trust me on that.
In the imaginary land of goodies and gumdrops most of us expected preseason to pass on by smoothly and without any bumps. Oh boy was that a great summer mindset! I bought into that one pretty well, but then again the unprecedented turnover for the club is really the first of its kind. Chemistry was going to be an issue -we all knew that- but the magnitude of the issue was an unknown for both fans and the players themselves. Sure the players entered preseason with a rough estimate of the chemistry that needed to form, but perhaps a 7-1 meltdown clarifies things for the team. They aren't looking at a couple of meet 'n' greet practices, they're facing some major obstacles they must cross before becoming the major force we know they can be. I know this is motivational locker room speech material, so Kevin Dineen better start watching the movies to get in touch with his inspirational side.Don't assume the players are feeling skippidy-do-dah about their preformace either, because my oh my they sucked, and after bad losses they know it. Jonathan Huberdeau isn't on top of the world right now because he scored the lone goal, losing in such spectacular fashion sends a wake up call through the entire roster. Take Matt Duchene's tweet just hours after losing 6-0 against the Kings yesterday:
Sorry to all the fans that paid their hard earned money tonight to watch that terrible performance of ours. We WILL be better...This Avs team is not the same one from last year so don't get used to seeing games like that. We're not gonna disappoint you guys again
Don't you think that same thought is circulating through the locker room of a down and out Panthers club right now? The answer is yes. If I were calling the shots I'd be taking my team the long way home, on the bus, just to let the loss sting a couple more hours. Players don't like to lose, whether in preseason or regular. Getting blown out 7-1 is exactly the benchmark a team needs to measure up to, and right now the Cats are coming up short. They'll just have to build themselves up in one week, end of story.
As for goalteanding, there were no excuses tonight for Jose Theodore. He played quite well in the first period but fell apart in the end. He allowed 7 goals while Markstrom sat on the bench waiting for the call he never got. Good! Let Theodore get blown out, this game didn't count towards anything. In fact, I wish the game continued so he could let in a few more! Jose Theodore signed with the Panthers assuming the starting job was his regardless of his performance. Theodore tried the same thing during his last year in Colorado too. The injury to Scott Clemmensen must have resulted in a big sigh of relief for Jose because he played like he'd had a few celebratory drinks before warmup. The fact is, Jose Theodore isn't battling for a starting role with a career backup anymore, now he's contending with the hockey's best prospect goalie who's repeatedly stated he wants the starting job for the Florida Panthers of the NHL, not the San Antonio Rampage of the next best thing.
After sitting on the bench all 60 minutes of the game, maybe Jacob Markstrom had plenty of time to think. Tyler Plante is headed to the AHL unlike most had expected. Theodore got a big slice of humble pie tonight. Florida needs a competent goalie in order to finish outside of the league cellar this season. "I am the goalie of the future, but when does the future become now?" Coach Dineen's strategy isn't top-secret, he's going to ride the hot goalie. If Markstrom can play average in his starts, expect him to become the starter.
I liken it to college football. Sure, starting a freshman quarterback might be rough in the first few years but in those last two he'll be dominant. Or you can start a new senior every year and start from scratch again once next season rolls around. For Markstrom, if he can start out slow and get the hang of being an NHL starter by February, everything will work out just peachy. They'll give him the starting role if he shows he can improve himself, one bad night doesn't equate to a plane ticket to Texas. Yesterday I wasn't a fan of Markstrom getting lots of NHL minutes this year, but tonight is a lot different.
That's the first scenario, the second is that Theodore realizes he's in the fryingpan (before the season has even started!) and makes a valiant effort to become the starter he was in Washington. If anything, Theodore has shown himself to be resiliant over the years, one bad loss shouldn't end his hopes before they even begin. The last time he got whooped this badly was in April 2009, 2 1/2 years ago. Last time he let in 7+ was almost 5 years ago. These kinds of losses don't happen to a goalie simply because they are usually pulled after 4 goals, it's rare to be hung out so badly. We all know that goalies are weird and that little things effect them in strange ways. How about getting blown out before you're set to start your first game of the season? Not only does that get inside your head, it's also a complete and total embarrassment for a goalie so highly awarded. I made plenty of Theodore jokes tonight as Dallas ran up the score, Theodore needs some kind of cruel motivation from the bench and from the fans to come back with a vengeance. Someone has to strike a chord in Theodore, tonight was a blemish on his pride. Maybe Dineen is a genius for leaving Teddy in for the whole game.
So to make a long story short, there are two ways to look at a team from the opponents view. For the Islanders who'll enjoy home ice advantage in the season opener for the Panthers, a Florida team who lost 7-1 can be viewed as "They're down! They're out!" or "They're looking for redemption to start the season". In the latter respect, the Panthers are a dangerous team ready for a statement win to start a statement season. I truly don't think anyone is content with losing anymore, the vectors for that habitual losing streak were removed this summer. The new Panthers are in it to win it, regardless of the goalie captain or coach. This is just the first of many tests.

Well...
This is a (mostly) new team, so honestly, if after 10 games they are at 4-4-2, I would be thrilled. Free agency saw a lot of cash thrown around, and it should be for the better. How many games will it take for the team to gel? Who can know for sure? Let’s just hope that it happens soon enough to make a serious run at the post-season.

Can we just skip the embarassment and make Markstrom the starter?
All kidding aside, though, there’s one thing I have in mind:
Huberdeau, feeling great he may not be, I believe at the very least he’s earned a 9-day look (assuming the contract deal and all gets fixed).
The Florida Panthers have become Chicago's retirement home. This is oddly fitting.
I place little weight in the preseason.
I want to see the effort if I’m the coach, I want to see the work being but in by the players so I know who I can and cannot TRUST game-in and game-out during the season. Now, Dineen has been placed in a pretty unique situation, and much of the “status quo” gets thrown out in this particular instance, so things can be a bit skewed as far as the final game results my be concerned. That being said, if Theodore just plain phoned it in, then Dineen has an obligation to play the backup, if for nothing else than to send a message to the rest of the team that half-assing it just wont cut it, no matter what hardware you happen to have collecting dust in your closet, IMO.
Start Markstrom, give the team(and the fans) something to rally around before the season starts. If nothing else, it basically tells Theo(and anyone else not willing to leave it all on the ice) that the contract simply states you’ll get paid, and if your content to sit the bench and collect that paycheck, you better believe the rest of the league will be watching….and the KHL will be waiting.
I agree with this mentality. We might have a Crawford/Turco situation on our hands if things continue this way.

I think it all depends ion wether or not Theo actually CARES about how he’s precieved, IMO. If he doesn’t give a s**t and is content to collect a paycheck regardless, then that situation will work itself out.
Dineen has just as much a stake in this as ANY of the players from an incentive standpoint, especially since this is his 1st NHL gig. If Theo’s skills have eroded to the point that he’s simply just delusional about his ability to be the #1, then it’s Dineens job to recognize that, loyality be damned, if it’s just indifference on his point, then he doesn’t just need to sit, he needs to go.
There are few, if any pro athletes, who are there just to collect a paycheck unless they’ve been with a team for awhile and are tired of their situation.
I expect Theodore to bounce back, if not then the Markstrom contingency comes into effect and he knows it.
Florida Panthers, Good Hockey, Great Sponsors!! Panthers STH since 1994 and Lightning STH since 2011.
As much as people say Theo was a good goalie in Washington, he really wasn’t. he lost his job going into the playoffs.
I don’t see a bounce back from Theo here. He might have a game or two he looks good, but overall, he isn’t the goalie people make him out to be. He never was. He’s made a career of having a season where the team essentially played above their heads, for Saku Koivu battling back from lymphoma. He hasn’t produced a solid season since. He’s had a couple average seasons for a goalie, but nothing consistent.
I’ve said all along, Markstrom will get the starting job by the time the All-Star break rolls around. I’m now hoping its sooner, for the Panthers (and for my fantasy league) to salvage a season that is going to live and die on developing chemistry.
by MrOmnipotent on Sep 30, 2011 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions
I think we’d all agree that Theo is just keeping the seat warm. You’d just hope that the professionalism AT LEAST keeps the GAA and save % at a “survivable” level until the break.
He only puts up good numbers in a contract year, which this year isn’t for him. He should never have been signed for more than a single season.
by MrOmnipotent on Sep 30, 2011 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions
I really hope that this team walks into the season pissed. I also think a situation like this will clear up who our Captain should be. In regards to Theodore I am not pushing the panic button just yet. But don’t think that the top brass didnt take a quick look at Turco or Nabokov as a just in case.
A lil thunder and a lil lightning is what the Cats are going to bring this year.

We have no enforcer.....
I’m very concerned about who replaced Darcy H…who will protect Huby…Boother and the boys…..Almost EVERY team has 1 or 2 heavyweights [Dallas 3] ….we have none…..Bradley is a middleweight and Skille is not a proven fighter……Nothing for other teams to fear here!
Agreed.
Just pre-season. I am sure the Panthers will do well once they build chemistry together and some of the lines shake out.

Yonkman looks like an occasional call-up
…otherwise you’re right, it’s a bit lean in the fighting department. Gudbranson may be the one who drops them more than anyone else
Give it til halfway into the season, then a real enforcer will be traded to Florida or picked off waivers (Godard would be awesome)
The days of a Godard type enforcer are gone. For a guy to be to be valuable as an enforcer, he needs to be able to skate and put in some points. Someone like Downie in Tampa. You are seeing fewer and fewer of the Godard types in the NHL.
by MrOmnipotent on Sep 30, 2011 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions
But you’d agree that the Steve Downie’s of the world are the exception, not the norm. While I agree that the days of taking up a roster spot for a full-fleged “goon” or pretty much gone.
Not quite
See: Ducks, Oilers, Flames, Pens, Bruins, Senators, Jets, Kings, Hawks, Flyers, Leafs and Devils
These teams have at least one enforcer on their roster (although I’m certain PDB is doing his best to weed out the meanies on his roster)
And Downie,
I like the guy, he’s very energetic but he’s not someone I would point to and say ‘this is the guy you want fighting for you every night’. He’s a sh&# stirrer and sometimes very dirty. He will fight from time to time but he’s best at playing shutdown defensive hockey, getting opponents pissed off and scoring the occasional goal or making great passes (he’s a legit playmaker). But not the guy for fighting. Too small and not good enough in fights to matter, even against most guys his own size
One more thing about Downie
The Bolts are misusing him. If they keep pretending they are Red Wings east and use him as a main enforcer, they will lose him to injuries. He had ankle injuries last season and part of it was due to fighting bigger guys. I almost feel sorry for him but he does make a nice paycheck (and earns it)
Yzerman should get someone to back Downie up, otherwise it’s gonna get ugly for that team, I don’t care how suspension happy Shanahan is
Jovo even though he’s older now won’t hesitate to drop the gloves, neither would Gudbranson.
You mentioned Bradley but you also can’t forget Versteeg. Sure he’s more benefitial to us on the ice but he’s the type of guy who will drop the gloves and stick up for a teammate (as everyone saw on tuesday) and he’s no pushover either he’ll throw punches quick.
You can’t exactly use size as an excuse when it comes to fighting, remember Tie Domi? if size meant anything when it comes to fighting everyone would be off in Europe looking for 6’9 monsters..

I’m not too worried about last night’s result. It’s the preseason, after all, a road game, and a lot of good players didn’t make the trip.
Huby’s got to get signed so he can get his 9-game look. I think it’ll happen, too. If it’s a money issue (and it shouldn’t be since he’s such a high pick and rookie contracts are capped), all Tallon has to do is point at what happened with Gudbranson last year. Tallon can and has played hardball, and however the situation plays out it works in his favor.
I think the real hardass is Mike Santos, but the point is valid.

For those who think Jose just phoned this in or is just here to collect a paycheck, you don’t know anything about him as a person or player. As someone who has followed his career closely, he’s not that type of person. He’s had rough patches, and he’s consistently worked to get out of those rough patches. I honestly don’t take much stock in anyone’s opinion about how a goalie plays unless they have played the position themselves. So many factors go into why a goal was scored. It’s not all the goalie’s fault many times. I didn’t get to see the game, as most of us didn’t last night, so I think it’s unfair to judge what actually happened. I would hope that people would give him a chance. There’s a reason that Matt Bradley said “To me, he’s one of the top goalies in the league. He doesn’t get rattled by things. I love playing with Jose.” His teammates have always had high praise for him. That is more important to me than what fans think about him. Here’s hoping this practically all-new team is able to get used to each other and a new coach and a new system and shut the haters up.

And I think he’ll be sticking around but only time will tell and we’ll know by tuesday if he even gets a contract done.. If he sticks and he plays like he did in preseason or even at 75% of what he did in preseason then theres a chance we’ll be collecting some rookie hardware end of the year.

On the surface, I have no problem with the signing. I started my “hockey life” as a Red Wings fan and have always kept an eye them, so I’m familiar with Manny. I just wonder who the odd guy out is when Clemmer comes back. You play the guy who’s getting it done, period, I understand that, but if you assume Theo is the #1, and when Clemmer gets back he’s the backup, so Marky goes back down, but then you have 3 goalies in SA. So, you’d have to assume that Manny is just babysitting until Clemmer is ready to go, yes?
Yup, once Clemm is back Foster probably heads to Cincy unless we trade Theodore down the line.

Since it’s a PTO, it probably depends on how soon Clemmer comes back. If he’s back a week or two into the season, they let Manny go. If Clemmer’s recovery takes a while, then they sign him for the year and when Clemmer gets back, they send Manny to the ECHL or they lend either Manny or Plante to another AHL team. (Plante can’t be sent to the ECHL because he’s not on an entry level contract anymore. They may be able to send Legace to the ECHL depending on the terms of his AHL contract, or they may have to lend or move a goalie when there’s five.)

Considering how Doughty knocked about 20-30 pounds off Hall, you might be right, LOL.
RNH is a talent, no doubt about it, but everyone will point to Skinner and say: “See!! He did it!!” to which I say: If you are ignorant enough to think that all situations are created equal, you deserve every bad thing that happens.
I was just curious because now, more than ever before in The NHL, the 1st overall pick is expected to be able to step right in and have an immediate impact. The physical aspect of his maturization isn’t all that different than Huberdeau’s, who knows, maybe as big as he is now is as big as he’s gonna get, maybe he just doesn’t have the frame to put on anymore significant weight.
Only landeskog was supposed to jump right in, which is probably why they drafted him even though they need defensemen. Unfortunately the immediate impact theory doesnt always go as planned, the development theory always works, even if it does mean a wait.

Nice crop of rookies this year with Scheifele being the most impressive by far in preseason.followed by Huberdeau and Zibanejad. Gotta give props to the Jets for supposedly reaching and grabbing a potential gem with their first pick. Curious to see how many of these kids get their ELC’s and play this season.
No Panic Yet But......
First off, I’m new to the Litter Box. I’ve been a diehard Cat’s fan since Day 1. I like most of you have suffered year after year with mediocrity, bad trades, draft picks, coaching, GM’s etc etc. We had 3 pretty good years(yr. 1-3) & 1 Cinderella year ‘96. I remember the chemistry, comradary passion &effort those guys put out every game. They were castoffs from other teams who had something to prove & boy did they do that. Nobody expected them set the mark for most points by an expansion team & nobody expected them to reach the finals in only their 3rd year but they did.
Fast Forward to this coming year. DT had to do something drastic to get the air of losing out of the locker room. We hope new faces, new coach will bring an attitude & work ethic we haven’t seen for years. I wasn’t crying when Vouchoun jumped ship. In fact, even though his numbers were good, he had many bad nights especially the ones where we had the lead with less than 5 minutes to play & blew that lead. How many games did we lose in the final minute? How many of those loses were attributed to “soft” goals? Vouchoun was hot & cold & he had a shitty attitude. Good Riddence!
If we are going anywhere, we better have the goalie situation settled by Dec. With Klemmer out we should go with Marky and let him settle into his NHL boots. He might lose a few but if he lives up to all the hype, and puts together a string of wins, the future might end up to be the present. This is all contingent on the following #1 that we learn how to score more than 1 or 2 goals a game #2 we have a strong defense in front of him not leaving it up to him to make 3 saves on a given play & #3 we learn to how keep attacking & not go into a shell when we have the lead. Goalies should be expected to make the initial save & not be magicians. OK, enough with the goalies.
As far as #11 JonnyH this kid is the REAL DEAL. He’s a fluid skater, has great hands, passes on the tape and seems to have good hockey sense, something JBO never had.
I think we should not only keep him for 9 games, we should make him a permanent member of this team. Forget the numbers from pre-season. Just look at his skill level. Forget the weight issue, just look at his skill level. I’m telling you, this kid is gonna be the superstar we’ve always hoped we’d draft. Too many failures, but I think we finally found a gifted scorer & play maker. I know he’s young but so what, you either have the goods or you don’t. He needs to play every game and develop, not in S.A. but here in Sunrise. Why waste a year, he’s ready now. DT if you’re listening, sign the kid ASAP. He’s gonna be a top line player. When he’s leading the team in scoring after 9 games, you’ll see I was right. Or, he’ll bend under the pressure of playing in the NHL and sputter……….NOT!
Anyway, I’ve rambled a bit for my first post….sorry………….Please feel free to agree or rebutt………..

Anyone remember when the Flames went 7-0-0 last season?
No? Well they did, and they had a +12 goal differential. While the Stanley Cup champions, the Boston Bruins, went 1-3-1 with a -4 goal differential. Preseason’s are fun!

When the Canucks have a bad preseason, they make it to the finals. Preseason means nothing other than to look at what you’ve got talent wise and to get players in game shape. Hopefully without incurring any injuries.
Answer this question, do the preseason stats count for anything?
Cats will be fine, once they get some chemistry and shake the lines out.

Poor guy just can’t seem to crack the lineup of any team that he’s with. I feel bad for him.

The Panthers were discussing his situation today, however, his agent Allan Walsh hasn’t returned calls in the past two days.
Article from Sun Sentinel on Huberdeau and signing a contract by Tuesday.
I say he looks into a new agent

I would assume that means the agent hadn’t returned a call to the Sentinel in two days. The writer should have specified this point. I find it hard to believe with the contract deadline approaching and Huberdeau having such an impressive preseason that his agent has gone AWOL and is not keeping in touch with the Panthers.
Not bashing anyone in particular as it is a widespread issue but what passes for professional writing today irks me to no end. Constant typos, poor grammar and worst of all erroneous information due to lack of knowledge of the subject or simply due to rushing to get something fired off. if you are getting paid to report on something be a little more detailed oriented. I was reading something about the Dolphins the other day on a local news site that will remain nameless and it looked like it was written by a third grader.
The Sun-Sentinel, especially on-line, is a glaring example.

There’s a reason newspapers have copy editors. The blog posts by the beat writers are pre-editing.
Anyway, yeah, somewhere else Santos was saying on Thursday or so that he’d talked to Huberdeau’s agent earlier in the week.
