Minor swap: Cheverie to Coyotes for Bernhardt
The Panthers today announced goaltending prospect Marc Cheverie has been traded to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for undrafted forward Justin Bernhardt.
Per CapGeek, Bernhardt has one season remaining on a three-year (two-way) contract and will likely split time between the ECHL Cincinnati Cyclones and AHL San Antonio Rampage - a club he's previously played for. The Rio Grand Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League are another potential destination, though highly unlikely given his career to this point (and you have to admire Dale Tallon at times like this: the man's got options).
Our very best wishes for a bright future go out to Cheverie who - out from beneath that all-encompassing cloud known as The Jacob Markstrom Effect - will be a top-tier netminding prospect for the 'Yotes.

The only reason I could see Tallon pulling the trigger on this trade is the fact that Marc isn’t going to be our starter with Markstrom being here. He might either see Plante or Foster as being the backup now. Good luck to Marc in the future, in my mind he was going to be our backup.

This trade doesn’t make any sense, yeah sure Cheverie might not be the future in goaltending for Florida, but trading him for a guy who’s basically a career ECHLer is just a waste.

Not excited about the trade, I suspect Tallon will pick up a goalie next draft.

Having watching Kyle Turris down here in San Antonio the last couple years, I have to wonder how long Phoenix will still go with him. He was a great AHL player, but it seems to me he never couldn’t put on enough weight to play in NHL. Maybe a change in scenery could do him some good…
Was beginning to get curious myself about his apparent lack of “forward progression”. Pretty high pick, there…

He can’t progress with Phoenix, he’s averaged 12:16 of ice time in 131 games, and he’s playing a system that doesn’t match his style.
