Open Thread: Panthers Rookie Camp underway from Coral Springs; Matthias re-ups
The (somewhat complete) camp roster can be found here; keep in mind it has not yet been updated to reflect Thursday's Marc Cheverie/Justin Bernhardt deal, so expect another goaltender (Tyler Plante?) to be making an appearance soon.
Also: due to absolutely stupid NCAA restrictions, prospects Nick Bjugstad (Minnesota), Zach Hyman (Michigan), and Rocco Grimaldi (North Dakota) cannot participate. Rock on, boys...we'll miss ya.
Update: C Shawn Matthias has been re-signed to a two-year deal. Thx to Sdiaz6215 for the link.

Sucks to hear about Bjug, Hyman, and Rocco. Was looking forward to seeing them in a game scenario. :(
Oh well. Hockey is back!

Three of them might make for a heckuva line.

Yeah, college players can’t do almost anything with a pro team. It’s not an issue with other sports because they don’t draft college players. As an example, you have to explicitly give up your status as a student-athlete to be drafted by the NBA.

Actually, the NBA, you can declare for the draft and later withdraw before the draft actually happens. In the NFL, if you declare for the draft, you’re done. No second guessing. A lot of kids are drafted out of college in baseball as well. All of the big four sports draft out of college. In fact, they’re tryin to force kids into college with the NBA.

Hmm… Interesting. I did not know that. My knowledge of NCAA rules mostly regards eligibility issues while they’re in college. I don’t know a lot about the drafting outside of hockey because I don’t really pay attention to those sports. But it’s amazing what these kids can get in trouble for while they’re at school. It’s insane.

There goes the trade speculation. Yesterday’s trade still makes no sense.

Does anyone have info on Bernhardt…..How will he benefit the Panthers Org. Does he have any specific skills that make him a standout in a certain catagory……..
Here’s his profile on HockeysFuture.com…
Last updated a few weeks ago. 5.5D
“D – Unlikely to reach potential, could drop 3 ratings – a player who has a chance to reach his potential but is unlikely to do so. The potential rating is multiplied by 70 percent for depth chart purposes, indicating that the player’s potential is extremely fluid.”
No real way to predict his fate, so take it with a handful of grains of salt.

From my PHX twitter expert @YotesGurl:
he’s less skilled, more solid. he’s a physical player that is defensively responsible. I only saw him at camps last season the term “serviceable” comes to mind.

Not if you consider the very real possibilities that A) Cheverie is too good to spend another year in the ECHL and B) the team is set with Markstrom and Plante in the AHL., as well as the fact that we have a lot of goalies in the system now.
Now look at it from the perspective of the Coyotes. You’re Don Maloney and you see that the Panthers have 2 NHL goalies, 2 AHL goalies, one who will probably be an NHL goalie next year and 3 ECHL, possibly AHL goalies. And you have: Mike Smith and Jason Labarbera. So you call up Dale Tallon and ask about his goalies. And Tallon has not only an AHL team to stock, but needs guys to stash in the ECHL and CHL for when guys on the AHL team get called up.
When you see “prospect” swaps, remember some of those guys are going to be career minor leaguers and sometimes a trade is about what you need in your minor league system.

Except Dale Tallon doesn’t have to stock up the Cincinnati Cyclones. If you look at the Florida before the trade you would see two goaltenders who were backups last season, a starting AHL goalie who missed the end of the season with an injury, Tyler Plante, Marc Cheverie, and Brian Foster. If I’m Dale Tallon, and Phoenix calls offering a career ECHLer for Marc Cheverie, I hang up. Florida had the leverage and could have turned this into a bigger move. This trade may not matter, but if the only reason this trade happened was because the Panthers needed some guy in Cincinnati, why not sign someone? Too many goalies? Well trade Brian Foster, what was Phoenix going to do, say Foster isn’t worth the value of Justin Bernhardt?

Or the devil’s advocate would say, Florida fans over value their career minor leaguers.

No Tallon doesn’t have to stock the Cyclones, but he needs to make sure he’s got enough good call-ups for San Antonio. If you want your AHL team to be a winner and you know you’re going to have to call their best players up at some point during the season, you want some control over the players they’ll be calling up.
Look at it this way, if Cheverie is too good to play in the ECHL anymore, then it’s a disservice to him to keep him there another year behind Plante and Markstrom. You can slag the Panthers goalies all you want, but they’re the goalies this year. Sorry, but Cheverie was not going to outplay Clemmensen in camp and get the backup job this year. There’s an outside chance Markstrom could outplay Clemmer, but they’re still going to put him in San Antonio because they want him to play a starter’s load of games, not a backup’s load.
Taking a slightly longer view, next year they’ve got a veteran NHL guy and a young guy they think will be ready to move up and they can look at platooning them for a year until the young guy is ready to be a starter and another guy in the AHL who may be getting ready to be an NHL backup. And then still another couple of guys in the pipeline. So, next year Cheverie could be trying to get the backup gig with San Antonio in the Panthers organization or potentially outplaying someone like Labarera for the backup gig in Phoenix. Weirder things have happened.
Looking at this from yet another angle: it’s a business. A lot of the GMs have good relationships and sometimes you do a guy a favor. Maybe, just maybe there’s some future considerations in there and Tallon will want something back later. Or possibly, Don Maloney let Tallon talk to Jovo before July 1. He signed pretty quickly, no? Maybe Maloney did him a favor and he’s paying it back by giving him a better player than he’s getting back. We’ll obviously never know, but this isn’t an EA Sports game. We’re talking about real people here. Sometimes you have too many goalie prospects at the same level and it’s unfair to hold some of them back just so you can have the most.

Because his second year is one-way, methinks this was the incentive to make Matty finally sign. However, this might work both ways…if Matty can’t live up to potential this season, the one-way becomes an incentive for the team to trade him.

Or he gets buried in the minors like Kennedy last year. He makes the team next year, he gets traded, or he gets waived and sent to the AHL. If he clears waivers, he’ll play there the whole year. So, he has incentive but he also gets burned if he doesn’t make it. That’s a good kick in the ass for him and good for the team because there’s no way he’s slacking if he knows he could get stuck in the AHL with no potential for call-up.
