Sunday Caterwaul: Panthers Open Forum
"Krys' commentary to me is that he did say something. At the end of the day, we're confident there will be no further punishment and he will be cleared of wrong doing and his name will be cleared. Krys is a family man with kids, his whole family is in Canada and are hearing this everywhere. It's tough on all of them. He hopes there is an understanding that there was no ill intent on his part. It was a misunderstanding. He wants his record to be clean when all this is over.''
Scott Norton, longtime agent for Panthers forward Krys Barch, following an accusation of a racially-motivated slur by his client directed at Montreal's P.K. Subban at the conclusion of the first period of Saturday's eventual 3-2 Florida victory. The league is investigating the allegation. Much more from OFP here.

Why last night rocked:
- DAL over BOS, 4-2
- TOR lost in regulation to...
Why last night jonesed:
- ...WPG. Further, just about everyone who realistically needed to pick up points did, with WSH, NJ, TB, OTW and BUF adding to their totals
Why tonight is, in fact, not a Big Deal in SoFla:
- CGY at NSH, 6 p.m.; only game on the sched, kids
Next up for the Cats:
Thursday from Madison Square Garden; LBC Game Thread at 6:30. WPG and WSH each play one game in that span.
Did you know:
Of FLA's 39 games, 21 have ended as one-goal affairs (regulation and OT/SO)

The only good thing about this stat is this year we are on the winning end. How many last year did we miss it by 1?

A bigger surprise than CBJ holding a lead over WSH for more than two periods? Yeah, probably.

Notice how much time and effort was spent by the officials in keeping Moen and Gudbranson away from each other?

If we ever roll 7 D at a MTL game, let Guds do his thing. Getting Moen off the ice would be pretty good too since hes been scoring this season.

Between our general dislike of their fans, the team’s attitude towards winning the game for their fans (Shawn Matthias: “Those Canadiens fans can just go home disappointed, can’t they? We don’t… care about their fans, we care about ours.”) and some obvious dislike between the players on the two teams, with the new schedule and potential playoff matchups we could be looking at the beginning of an ugly rivalry with the Habs.

The way I see it, we are only 3 points from first with a pile of injuries that could easily have made us fall out of contention. Watch out when we are healthy!

GAME WORN JERSEYS
If you go on ebay, there are game worn jerseys for Quinton Howden and Johnathan Huberdeau. There is a WHL subway Canada/Russia seires jersey and a Team Canada for Quinton Howden. There is a Team Canada jersey for Huberdeau, just thought i’d share.
Also weren’t we suppose to sign john Madden? what’s happening?
Goc is close to coming back but Madden still may sign.

Heard it might be a while. Nothing close to official, though.
At the very least, we should be seeing Samuelsson back on Thursday.

I just threw this out there on twitter but...
What if the chirp from Barch was something innocuous and it says more about the official’s thinking than the player’s intent? What if the official would have used said phrase a a racial epithet in his own life and assumed Barch was doing the same? Going out on a limb here but in my experience racism is more deeply ingrained in older white dudes than it is in 30 year old athletes.
Again, just throwing it out there. If he did indeed use a slur/epithet/euphemism then Barch is in the wrong all the way… but think about it.

I also think it’s pretty crazy how deep our lineup looks when completely healthy… since, ya know, I feel like we’ve barely gotten a look at our lineup at 100%. I wonder where Upshall fits in once he’s back…
Versteeg-Weiss-Fleischmann
Samuelsson-Matthias-Upshall ?
Bergenheim-Kopecky-Skille
Santorelli-Goc-Bradley
Where does Sturm fit in? We really need a true 2nd line center as well. Maybe Dale can make a trade for a second line center with an expiring contract or with a bit of a cap hit in a package deal for Santorelli, Sturm, Clemmer, and a pick or something?
Heres what I’m thinking:
(Upshall is listed as a RW on depth charts and profiles, but Ive found a lot of places where hes listed as a LW, so that helps. Sturm is the same way.)
Fleischmann-Weiss-Versteeg
Upshall-Matthias-Samuelsson
Kopecky-Goc-Sturm
Bergenheim-Santorelli-Skille
leaving Bradley and Barch to keep Ellerby company.
However, its highly unlikely we have a 100% injury free roster, so this is all hypothetical. As we’ve seen, some players like Bradley step up to fill injury absences then fall back to earth.

Butters, Upshall, Samuelsson, Kopecky, and Sturm have all played both wings at some point in their NHL career. Enough games to warrant Yahoo sports to have them listed as multipositional players in fantasy hockey in past seasons. Bergenheim might even have played a little right side with the Isles early on.
by MrOmnipotent on Jan 2, 2012 12:44 PM EST up reply actions
Lots of third line talent there. And that group might get you a third round pick, if you’re sending the other team a second.
by MrOmnipotent on Jan 2, 2012 12:41 PM EST up reply actions
Thank goodness Samuelsson and Goc are both at practice today (wearing the Oranges). I feel like that means with the amount of practice time/time off the team gets before the game Thursday, we might see them both back in action. If they’re both back, then we’re only missing Bergenheim, Skille, Upshall, and Sturm. And hopefully by the end of next week we’ll see Bergy and Sturm back.
I’m hoping that we’ll be totally injury free and have every person back by end of the month.
Dreger reporting the Leafs put Philippe Dupuis on waivers. He’d fit a center spot nicely moving Kennedy back to one of the wings.

Do the Panthers really need another guy who can’t score or isn’t a major set-up man? Dupuis would be a waste of a roster spot for the next 30+ days.

If hes on a two way contract, I’d be fine with it. If anything it would help keep SA happy by sending back Kennedy or someone
