Poll: LBC Community Member Location Census for 2012

An unofficial census, of course, but a quick way to get a feel for where y'all are strolling in from to chat up the Cats, rats and a merciless stretch of injuries. Hearty thanks to our crosstown pals at Fishstripes for the inspiration, and to you for gracing our doorway each day.

Please note, there was simply no way to break every geographic region of the planet into a reasonably-sized poll, so if your own little slice of Eden went unrepped, the fault is entirely my own (hence the "hotbeds" choice).

I am not a number. I'm A FREE MAN!

At any rate, I would consider myself as living “In the Shaddow of the Arena” as it were. Live from the 33351.

I live in the shadow of the arena as well. repping the 33326. although I do a lot of my posting while at work in NMB.

Me, I’m trapped in the hockey wilderness that is Oregon. Expansion to Seattle and Portland please! At least it’d mean I could actually attend a Panthers game.

The Florida Panthers have become Chicago's retirement home. This is oddly fitting.

by BadLuckCharm on Jan 11, 2012 8:14 PM EST reply actions

If someone puts a building in either of those spots you’ve got an awfully good shot at expansion

Key West Arena in Seattle still exists, even if it’d be a poor one (Maybe slightly better than Winnipeg’s) until a new arena gets made.

The Rose Garden can hold hockey. They have the Winterhawks, at least.

The Florida Panthers have become Chicago's retirement home. This is oddly fitting.

by BadLuckCharm on Jan 11, 2012 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

Err… “KeyArena.” Whatever.

The Florida Panthers have become Chicago's retirement home. This is oddly fitting.

Was under the impression that isn’t a “hockey-friendly” barn…

Not particularly, but it’d work interim.

The Florida Panthers have become Chicago's retirement home. This is oddly fitting.

by BadLuckCharm on Jan 11, 2012 8:49 PM EST up reply actions

If Expo Hall was sufficient for the Bolts, Key Arena will do splendidly.

Plus, if Seattle can support the Sounders so well (MLS, 4th largest attendance in the world, apparently), I think they can support a hockey team.

The Florida Panthers have become Chicago's retirement home. This is oddly fitting.

by BadLuckCharm on Jan 11, 2012 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

Also, Rose Garden capacity for hockey: 18,280.

Gary Bettman, make it so..

The Florida Panthers have become Chicago's retirement home. This is oddly fitting.

Winnipeg’s arena is pretty new and seats a little over 15K for hockey. Key only has something like 9 or 10K seats with unobstructed views for hockey. the WHL team in Seattle got the hell out of there. Not a hockey friendly arena at all even as a temp. home. see my post on 90 Seattle expansion below. Sonics killed NHL hockey in Seattle during the NHL’s great expansion of the 90’s by crooked means.

by Todd Little on Jan 12, 2012 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

If there were a hockey team in Seattle I’d move there tomorrow!

Seattle over Portland as a potential NHL site. I think the NHL works better in the lesser sized markets when there is no NBA. Imagine if Nashville (when it was going through it’s growing pains) and Columbus had to compete with the NBA?

Seattle got jobbed in the 1990 expansion where the Sens and Lightning came to be.
Bill Ackerley, son of the SuperSonics owner, attached himself to the expansion bid of Chris Larson and Bill McFarland and during the final stage of the process without his partners knowledge went into the NHL committee and told them Seattle was dropping out before they even presented. Soon after Key Arena was remodeled to be a virtually basketball only arena unsuitable for NHL hockey. Seattle was considered by many to be the favorite in that expansion and most likely would have gotten a team.

by Todd Little on Jan 12, 2012 9:14 AM EST up reply actions

having said all that – please, no more expansion for at least the rest of this decade.
leave potential markets like Seattle open for troubled teams to move into. if and when you have all teams solid in their markets at some point then and only then make the jump to 32.
