"I got along great with the coach, and the [Flyers] organization, and they asked me what I thought I was capable of doing. They told me I'd be in their plans. This was at the year-end meeting. Two months later, I was traded."

Why last night rocked:
Man...where to begin?
- BOS over WPG, 5-3; just 5?
- PHI over CAR, 2-1 (REG); come to think of it, almost rather the Canes took this one
- VAN over TB, 5-4 (SO); 8 different scorers in regulation
- STL over MTL, 3-0; Halak stumps Habs in heralded return to Montreal
- CGY over NJ, 6-3; Mr. One-Line-Team checked in with a minus-2
Why last night jonesed:
- NYR over PHX, 2-1 (SO)
Flip a coin:
- TOR over BUF, 2-0
- OTW over PIT, 5-1
- NYI over DET, 5-1(!)
Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla:
- PIT at WSH, 7:30 p.m.; Pens are 8-3-1-1 in D.C. since the lockout
- NJ at EDM, 9; Devils are 10-10-5-0-0 all-time at Rexall/Northlands, though Lou's Crew is 6-1 over last 7
Next up for the Cats:
Friday. At home. Against Pittsburgh. Now is a time of great decision - Are we to stay or up and quit? - There's no avoiding this conclusion - Our town is turning into…the LBC Game Thread, 7 p.m.
Playoff Update:
Did not play, playoff odds up 1.9 to 83.3% (Sports Club Stats)
Did you know:
Tomas Fleischmann is 7-5-12 (with 2 winners) in 15 games vs. the Pens
On the table:
Despite a recent rough stretch, Rampage fans have reason to look ahead to Saturday night...Theo may return soon, but in case the injuries in net don't settle out down the stretch, an option does exist...speaking of goaltenders, good ones are evidently a pretty big wheel down at the cracker factory...our longtime pal FrankD will be stepping aside from editorial duties at PensBurgh; our very best of luck to him - one of the pioneers in SB Nation's hockey network - down the road...just how bad is the situation in Columbus?...Surgery? What surgery? Alien is all smiles.

Yeah, not getting the logic in “our” list. Maybe based on last ten games (hence WPG above FLA)? No idea.

Power rankings will usually be based on the most recent trends with a team, so you don’t get things like a team that starts hot and then freefalls still in the top while they’re doing it. At least, I think that’s what they’re supposed to do. Theoretically. In practice, the Panthers were red hot and still never managed to be in a place where I thought they belonged on anything earlier this season, including when they were first in the east for that one blissful day or however long it was.
most power rankings are based on recent trends but not to the point of being completely off base. Ranking a division leader behind teams chasing them or having a team like the Caps ranked 10th when they have struggled all season and are not even in playoff position and coming off two straight losses is borderline ridiculous.
by Todd Little on Jan 11, 2012 11:48 AM EST up reply actions
Still…have to question WSH being ranked 8 spots higher than FLA, especially considering the Caps have lost two straight (though the previous four were all wins)

The WSH one cannot be defended, except maybe on the basis of Ovie having five goals in five games and that being a scary sign of things that might be to come. MAYBE.

I agree with the choice of Paul MacLean. Not just because I’m a part-time Sens fan, but because I’ve watched that team for nearly a decade and the energy that team brings every night is a complete change from seasons past.
I know you can say the same about Dineen and the Panthers, but everyone expected the Senators (including me) to finish last, and yet even with Craig Anderson’s slow start, they keep winning.
I completely disagree with Dan Bylsma, Claude Noel getting considerations though. Bylsma is overrated and Noel…well I haven’t watched enough Jets games to see if he’s done anything.

Looks like Petey is having fun with goalies again in NJ.
“He makes his own decision on it,” Brodeur said of DeBoer. "Definitely I’m not going to say I deserved it or whatever. He probably felt it worked once in Ottawa and he’d try to do it again. I don’t know his thinking process on that one.
“Especially games like that you have to give me a chance to play. Seven minutes into the game, it’s not over yet. Maybe he tried to spark the team or something. It just didn’t work this time.”

not sure why you are Rocking a Flyers win over Carolina. A team very likely not making the playoffs like the Canes beating a team that is going is a help to the Panthers despite being in the SE.
That will change beginning tomorrow; came to same conclusion this morning. Lightning, Isles probably fall into that category as well. Good pickup.

Good things to think about
Last night was Winnipeg’s game in hand on the Panthers. both teams have played 42 now.
When the Pens visit it’ll be their third game in four nights.
Boston will be without Marchand when they visit on Monday.
There’s hay to be made here.
Would love a nice winning streak to break open another sizable lead.

Give them the win in D.C. and they may be a little less hungry when they get to us, too. I never like to meet a team capable of great things when they’re on a losing streak.
A Pittsburgh win would make the first half of this week very good for the Panthers standings wise.

we got cut off from the last section at 6:55 after doing exactly what they told us to do. My son was really looking forward to asking Versteeg about breaking his stick in New Jersey.
We got cut from the Weiss section for the same reason- they were stopping all the signings at 7pm BUT that was never stated in the info and apparently they didn’t get started til nearly 6.. For all those Weaver fans- HE was the reason the 2nd section had so long a wait, he was being super chatty. As opposed to Garrison who was shoving everything down the table as fast as possible…
I hereby predict Captain Mike Weaver #43 will score 6G 20A -RCR 0G9A 12/6

And I will add… its classless not to have the 1/2 season holders come to this too. Is it REALLY such a hardship for the Panther players to spend 2.5 hours signing autographs for ALL the people who put up their hard earned dollars to come support the team???

Got thru all 4 stations but it was a tight rush lol, now to get that jersey framed. Weaver was cool but I had the most fun with Bradley talking about the hit from Monday, asked marky if they were putting in a full robotic knee and got a good laugh outta him too.
by Robert Wright on Jan 11, 2012 2:56 PM EST up reply actions
I had no problem going through all 4 lines as I got there very early and was in front of my first station. It is not unreasonable for the players to sign for an hour but more than that really is not right. I had gone to some of these before and I sort of like another way they did the setup better than this. They had all the players setup around the front. Sort of around where the old Pantherland configuration was. When you got to the first player you just continued on until you saw each player. From first auto to last only took around 15 minutes.
Took me about 45 minutes to get all of the signings. Didn’t have a problem at all. Had the most fun talking with Versteeg for a few minutes. Did anyone notice that Weiss really didn’t look and act all so happy yesterday??? Wonder what that was about…..

I had the same impression as you. Weiss was not happy last night. Versteeg was great. I really liked Campbell as I thanked him for coming to the team and he thanked me for having him.
Yea, I thanked Versteeg for coming here and said that hopefully he stays here for a long time to come. I told him that I liked him in Chicago and he told me that I better not be following them anymore, haha. I should’ve asked him when he was going to sing again, save that for next time I guess.
I don’t know what was wrong with Weiss. Either he was tired from practice (no excuse since no one else acted like that) or he’s maybe frustrated due to the fact that he’s not scoring or something that was really bugging him. Really thought I was going to meet an outgoing guy, was going to joke with him and ask him when he’s going to get the “C”, but he was just out of it so I didn’t even bother.
Skille was another guy that really made an impression. Very funny guy, for the hardest working player on the team. He was jabbing at Santorelli all night in front of the fans. Very funny guy, for those who didn’t go to the signing by the way, on his card he said that he’s going to be back really soon.

I’ve heard from several people who have met him that Weiss is a) not the most outgoing guy on the team and b) is very uncomfortable in these fan encounters. I have also talked to people who said if you get him at the right time, he can be very funny and personable, but extremely reserved the majority of the time.
I love me some Weiss and am still 100% behind his Captaincy campaign, but it is slightly disappointing knowing he’s not Mr. Personality. Regardless, the dude is allowed to have a bad day and if he was not in a good mood, it’s hard to pretend that all is well. Who knows, maybe he was having lady problems?? Or had a tummy ache?? Or is still upset about missing a tooth?? Speaking of…does he have a tooth during non-hockey situations?? Hmmmm…..
If the suspicions of a nagging injury have any merit that my have been part of the reason. When I met him during the pre-season he was quite personable.
My girlfriend actually asked him about the tooth and he said something to the effect of ‘never during the season but I have a bridge when there’s no hockey’. He was very cool about a question I’m sure he must get all the time.

Hmm…. something must have been on his mind then. I mean, I understand if he’s like that because that’s how I am when I’m around people I don’t know, but I’m not sure. I did hear on the radio the other day that most of the players ARE actually playing with injuries, so that can explain that. Also partially explains the slump that the team is currently in (hopefully exiting).

Such a joke… if this is in fact the list that is released tomorrow I vote that the “committee” that selects all stars gets dropped soon after.
Snubbing Garrison for Girardi or Kimmo is a joke in itself.. but throwing Evander Kane in there ahead of Versteeg or Fleischmann is a straight insult to them our club and our fans

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 11, 2012 4:23 PM EST up reply actions
Eh. If Versteeg and Garrison make it, Winnipeg and Philly fans would say the same thing you just did. Numbers are about even all around. Assuming they want to, or have to, pick one player from every team, Kane’s the only option in WPG and he’s got 18 goals on the year, one more than VerBeauty. Personally I’d like to see Garrison make it just to see how hard that cannon really can fire, but Girardi and Timmonen are top defensemen on the top teams in the league, so you can’t really get too upset about them being chosen.
The cats didnt have a rep at the game for a year or two, so I dont want to see the NHL use the excuse for putting someone in. They never went back and threw in a panther to make things fair.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 11, 2012 4:24 PM EST up reply actions
Except the Jets this season are better than the Panthers in the past two seasons. See any Blue Jackets on the roster?
by Alexander Calloway on Jan 11, 2012 4:28 PM EST up reply actions
I think Evander Kane has more goals than Versteeg and I know he has more than Flash this year. If the top line wasn’t as cool as it’s been, I’d say they’d be more of a lock, but let’s face it: they’ve cooled off.
On the other hand, Jason Garrison not getting the nod as a defenseman is gross. On the other other hand, they probably don’t want that shot of his in the game itself. Might accidentally chip another guy’s mask.
On whatever hand I’m up to, Girardi is also having a pretty great year.
Oh, and the analysis at least says that Versteeg barely missed out. But I don’t like that “barely” nonsense. He should be there, by rights.
Players get hurt or decline to join after the rosters are announced, so Garry can still be in the All-Star game.
by Alexander Calloway on Jan 11, 2012 4:30 PM EST up reply actions
that’s a mock up by the NHL.com staff not the real deal so let’s not get our panties in a bunch yet. I think Campbell and Versteeg should rep the Panthers but if not no biggie. The extra rest will do our guys good for the stretch run.
the thing thats agitating about it though is that people sat and thought this list actually looked good.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 11, 2012 4:32 PM EST up reply actions
I thing I love about the All-Star is how people be complain about the rosters and when the game is over, how useless the All-Star game is.
by Alexander Calloway on Jan 11, 2012 4:56 PM EST up reply actions
Yea, but leaving Florida out 2 or 3 years ago isn’t quite the same as not having the new Jets represented in their first year back. I don’t think Columbus has a guy in, so I guess it’s not like the MLB after all. But Kane’s got one more than Versteeg and is certainly just as deserving. And I agree, if that top line had kept up the pace they started the first couple months, all 3 could have been there. But with the injuries and teams starting to key in on them, they’ve slowed down.
I’m sure most teams have one or two guys that are probably deserving that didn’t get invited. There’s only so many slots to be filled. And in the end, I’d rather have Versteeg and Garrison get those days off to get ready for the final 2 months of the season anyways.
Repping a team simply because it’s their first year back in the league shouldnt be a factor.. it’s like rewarding them for being bad in the past losing their team and then finally gaining one back.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 11, 2012 4:31 PM EST up reply actions
Rob you should also take into account not only is it Winnipeg 1st year back but the game is also taking place in Canada. Kane is a worthy choice if it comes to pass.
So if it were in a US city it would be acceptable to throw kane off the list in place of someone less deserving..

I still don’t see why Kane is so undeserving… but in the end, it’s the All Star game… I get we all want people to give our players some respect, but I’ll happily wait until May and June to earn it than have it “voted on” for a meaningless game I haven’t watched in 10 years.
Guys, the ASG is a total complete joke. Dont sweat it if Versteeg doesn’t make it (does he really deserve to? Wheres Kovalchuk?) or if Garrison makes it (is he suddenly in the top 12 defenseman category?)
So lets say no Panthers make the ASG. Good, give everyone a rest. Have a light practice. Host their own skills comp.
Newsflash! FLA doesnt really have any stars worthy of All Star recognition. We hardly get NHL on the Fly recognition. Thats just how things are right now. In two years when Huby is scoring 40 goals and gets snubbed, be upset. But dont get upset because suddenly ice cold Versteeg doesnt make it.
I’m putting here for reflection later on in the season…. #14 Tomas [Fleischmann] is getting a 40G season. FLASH COUNT: 15G/19A

40 goals for Hubs? Fleischmann hasn’t even reached 20 and you’re moving on?

Not moving on, but I’d love to think Huberdeau scores like Stamkos!

Didn’t Billy suggest the other night that Hubs was going to have a 166 point rookie season? (I believe what he said was that Huberdeau was going to outpoint him in his first season and Mr. Lindsay has 165 points for the franchise, but I could’ve been confused.)
Yes, Brian Campbell should go.

Re: All Star Game Roster
Really? This game is not a meritorious honor to players who are doing a great job. I haven’t watched it in ages. Why is anyone here upset that some of the Panthers have not been selected to the game?
Simply put, take the days off, let some guys heal up, get at growing that division lead and making the playoffs once the hooplah is over with.
Hockey is a business, only we fans love it as a game.
Does anyone think the NHL should send 1 rep for each team?
The old sympathy card
Fish, Heatles, Cats, Fins, Noles
Only as much as I think kids should get a trophy for just showing up. That is to say, not at all.
I’m with Chris, when we have a legit superstar (at the league level, not just locally) that gets snubbed then we can cry foul. Until then let’s just sit back and enjoy the caricature of a hockey game that is the ASG.
On the other^5 hand, angellen makes a really good point about Garri-bomb: I wouldn’t be surprised if other players were scared of getting hit by one of his shots during an exhibition game.
How cool would it be if the team had an open afternoon practice where they actually held their own skils comp for the real fans?
