Florida Panthers Prospect Roundup: January 14, 2012
Been a while since you've seen one of these, but it's back! During the hiatus, the Rampage improved to .500 hockey with the help of hot goaltender Jacob Markstrom. With both Markstrom and Brian Foster in Florida, the Rampage signed Andrew Volkening to an amateur try-out (ATO). Volkening spent four years at the United States Air Force Academy, being their regular goaltender from 2007 to 2010. He won numerous awards in his college career, being named Atlantic Hockey Top Goaltender in 2008 and 2009. He went 69-39-14 with GAA of 2.19 and a . 915 Sv%.
The Rampage (or Florida Panthers) made a move on Friday, trading Angelo Esposito (who was acquired on July 8, 2011 for Kenndal McArdle) to the Texas (or Dallas) Stars for Ondrej Roman. Roman split his junior years between the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL and HC Vítkovice Steel of the Czech Extraliga (the highest-level ice hockey league in the Czech Republic). A fifth round pick (136th overall) in 2007, Roman played 72 games for Texas last season, scoring only 22 points (8G/14A) and playing in only two playoff games, while being a healthy scratch. This season he split time in both the ECHL (scoring six points in six games with the Idaho Steelheads) and AHL (five points in 24 games) before being traded.
Read on after the jump for stats and more...
The Rampage are 2-3-0 in the new year, losing close games to the Charlotte Checkers and Houston Aeros by one goal, and recently suffering a 5-0 blowout to the Abbotsford Heat on Tuesday. The Rampage currently sit 13th overall in the Western Conference at 17-18-2, just five points out of the eight seed.

Even our autotagger doesn’t list him (not SBN’s fault, btw). Kid’s gonna be big.

Tough call; as I understand it he can’t participate in either the rookie- or training camp due to NCAA rules. He could of course go pro early, but I don’t see that happening given his background, not to mention the competition among prospects. No reason not to wait a year.

If he does, like all players that jump from college to the pros, he’ll need at least a season in the minors to adjust to pro game.

Very likely.

not “all” NCAA players need to play a season in the minors, some are ready to come straight to NHL and that might be the case with Shore especially if he goes back for his senior year. Craig Smith with Nashville – no AHL time. Matt Read from the Flyers played 11 games in the AHL at the end of last season after he finished college and then made the Flyers in his first training camp.
Whoops, meant most. Forgot about Toews

Just finished watching a recorded DU game from Friday night. Shore had two powerplay goals and 3 assists for a five point night. Shore parked himself in front of the net on the PP and lead the breakouts for Denver, looking like the power forward I hoped he’d become. Interestingly Shore also is the captain of the club, and he gave up an empty net hat-trick to make the safe play and pass to a teammate, a very gentlemanly thing to do. Prospects John Lee (wears an A) and Sam Brittain(injured) also play for DU, but they didnt get much talk.
Overall, very impressed with Shore. He’s the top line center for DU, so he might be that 2nd line center we need for the future. I hope Tallon can swing a trade with L.A. to steal Drews bro Nick, he’s a pretty good player himself

Man, Garrett Wilson is underachieving and Trocheck looks good
Think Shirokov is under contract for another season over there

Hyman will be in the Frozen Diamond Faceoff outdoor game at Progressive Field tomorrow; Michigan vs OSU

Is there a reason why Garrett Wilson is underachieving? Is he being given enough of a chance or is he just not performing? Would love to see the Cats call him up just to see what he could do. Could just be one of those players that work out better in the NHL vs. the AHL.
- Go Panthers -
Doubt it. He may have had a great year with the guys around him. Joey Hishon was his linemate and a top prospect, could have inflated Wilson’s numbers.

His ECHL numbers are alright, so it could just be he’s not adjusted to the AHL level yet.

I would not get too up or down on any of this guys on this list except the few that are considered “can’t miss”. The sad reality is most of these guys will never make it in the NHL. Maybe about 10 of them (give or take a few) will become NHL regulars. The majority will toil away in the AHL and get called up here and there. I’ve been following the NHL for over thirty years now and if you believe everything that’s is written about these prospects than you may as well start reading the national enquirer. Drafting these players is such an inexact science although I think teams are doing a better over the 5-10 years as we are seeing fewer busts at the top end of the draft.. If had a dollar for every time this 1st round draft pick was going to blossom into a thirty goal scorer or this 3rd rounder was a steal that could play on the second line I’d be doing a lot better than I am now.
Basaraba
I follow UMD hockey very closely (program that Garrison came from along with current prospect Joe Basaraba). Basaraba is beginning to look good. He’s a big guy who can skate and has a little offensive game. At best, he’s probably a 3rd/4th line guy in the NHL, but someone who I think has a chance for you guys.
