Monday Caterwaul: Panthers GameDay Open Forum
Rumors abound pointing to a possible return by starter Jose Theodore (knee), who retains an overall winning record (15-13-1, 3 SO, 2.40/.923) when facing Boston. Scott Clemmensen - still the only realistic guarantee for a spot on the lineup card among Florida goaltenders this evening - sports a 5-3-1 mark (2.24/.929, 2 SO) vs the B's. And yes, those stats reflect the horror that was this, their most recent lovefest.
Update: via the club, Theodore "not expected to be in the lineup" tonight.

Why last night rocked:
- Hey, no loser points!
Why last night jonesed:
- WSH over CAR, 2-1 (REG); no need for a recall into the significance of this one as Tvo says no to 43 SOG
- MTL over NYR, 4-1; Pacioretty leads trio of Habs' three-pointers with 2G, 1A
- PIT over TB, 6-3; Malkin's 5 points (3 third period goals) sink Bolts, losers of seven in a row
Playoff Update:
- FLA did not play; playoff odds down 2 to 73.4% per Sports Club Stats
Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla (beyond the obvious):
- WPG at OTW, 7:30 p.m.; Happily - for now - Sens have won both games in 2011-12 by combined score of 10-5
- BUF at DET, 7:30; Wings are 6-1 in past seven vs Sabres
Next up for the Cats:
Mere hours away vs Boston from One Panther Parkway; the LBC Game Thread will be playing for Rio Grande Short-Haul Trucking, Briggs and Brown Sanitation, First State Bank of Salome & Woody's Smokehouse at 7.
Did you know:
Broons are 7-1 in last eight at the BAC, including 3 victories in the shootout...C David Krejci has an 11-game point streak (5G/11A) dating to December 17...

Ok so while fear has completely taken over my brain after the Caps win last night, there is one huge difference in the standings today and the standings last week: games in hand. For the first half of the season the Cats had 3-4 games above the rest of the SE (and most of the league). Now they have games in hand on nearly everyone that matters. Even if the boys won against Pit and NJ, just by numbers alone, we were bound to be out of 1st at the end of January.
Proof? Please see the following equation:
The lack of games we play this month + the amount of games everyone else plays x Washington’s decision to realize they are Washington = A knowingly rough January
See??? This was in the cards even before the Cats were injury plagued and playing like the Cats of old. No need to panic now. (…runs away to knock on wood…)
It looks to me like a coin flip between WAS and FLA for the Division.
The Caps are basically playing 50/50 games (at best) with some of the dregs of the league and getting some bounces that allow them to walk away with two points. At least lately, anyway. They certainly are not dominating and don’t look like they will start doing so any time soon.
FLA bolted out to a lead based on some overperformance from Theo and the first line, which was due to stop at some point.
TBL, CAR and WPG are dead in the water, though, so someone else will win the Division. The Caps have to go back on the road, where they stink, and their schedule stiffens up significantly after January.
It’s anyone’s guess who ends the season on top.

Winnipeg sure has shown their true colors on this road trip, how humiliating would it have been to lose the division to them?

I should probably disclose that I’m a Caps fan over here, just in the interest of fairness.
I don’t think the ‘Peg was ever any threat to win the Division. They had a little hot streak, like all teams will, and coinciding with a cold streak by the Caps they got up to second in the Division. I’ll be astonished if that isn’t their high water mark for the season.
Florida and Washington are both mediocre hockey teams and I anticipate they’ll both get mediocre results the rest of the way. The remaining games between the clubs (four, I think?) will go a long way to determining who takes the Division, and then it’s up to loser points, bounces and luck.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
So we are all back to saying that we are in the “Southleast” division??
I hereby predict Captain Mike Weaver #43 will score 6G 20A -RCR 0G9A 12/6
Be impeccable with your word, don't take anything personally, don't make assumptions, always do your best...
Maybe. The Caps are getting killed on the PK and on the PP on the road – conceding lots of goals against and not scoring any of their own. It’s a good recipe for losing hockey games.
However, they are generating better than average shots on their PP and suppressing shots against pretty well.
So maybe those numbers turn around a little. And maybe they don’t. They’re consistently under water in ES play on the road, but not by a huge margin. Certainly not enough to expect the abysmal results they’ve gotten so far. But enough to expect them to be sub-.500 by a bit.
In the end, it’s a coin flip.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Clemmenson is starting tonight, Foster is still here as backup.
Not having a good feeling about tonight. Clemmer is going to have to stand on his head.
On the bright side, all four injured forwards were skating today with the team in non-contact jerseys.

Bad Blood: Handshake line fight between North Dakota and Minnesota in NCAA.
That established: Blood, a 2007 Ottawa Senators fourth rounder, was a bit of an [expletive] after the game, going after Florida Panthers’ pick Kyle Rau (2011, No. 91 overall) in the handshake line and then fighting with Seth Ambroz (2011, Columbus Blue Jackets, No. 128).

Flash on the third line is a recipe for disaster. He’s really a one-trick pony, and that trick is scoring. Granted, if you’re going to have a trick, that’s the one to have. But he’s soft as hell, he won’t cycle or backcheck and he’ll get abused in the corners and in front of the net. Might as well keep throwing him out on the first line and hope he gets hot again.

Worth a read from SI/Dater's mailbag
If Roberto Luongo leaves Vancouver (as I predicted in my 2012 NHL forecast), I doubt very much if he comes back to Florida. I saw Jakob Markstrom play a few games early this season and I will bet that as long as he stays healthy, he will be a star in the NHL. The only reason he was sent down was to have him play every day because the Panthers have those big one-year contracts with Theodore and Clemmensen.
— Joel, Coral Springs, Fla.
Well, first off, Theodore and Clemmensen are making a combined $2.5 million on both of their contracts this season. I’m not sure that amount is “big.” Second, while I agree that Markstrom is a good prospect and likely the Panthers’ goalie of the future, there might still be a two- or three-year window where another netminder can come in and be the main guy while Markstrom keeps learning.
Luongo could be that guy. He’s still got game, he’s well remembered in Florida, he liked playing there, and he’d sell some tickets — something to always consider with the Panthers. So, I’m sticking with my prediction on this one. Luongo moves after this season, and Florida is prime real estate.
Thank you for your questions people. Keep ’em coming. — Adrian
