Tuesday Caterwaul: Panthers Open Forum
On a night when their execution and mental sharpness flickered on and off, the Bruins needed go-to stars to pick up the rest of the team. They were fortunate to have Rask at the top of his game. The Boston puckstopper stuffed 38 of 40 shots, not including the three he turned back in the shootout.
- Boston.com’s Fluto Shinzawa. Not to take anything away from an unexpected yet thoroughly thrilling come-from-behind points-grab by the Cats, but look above once again and replace "Bruins", "Rask" & "Boston" with "Panthers", "whomever is healthy" & "Florida". Sound like a familiar premise?

Ha, what a fab idea to get folks in the community to know who their Rampage team is! This could be what Dineen decides to use on guys not playing up to snuff, could you picture Madden or Versteeg asking you if you wanted fries with your sandwich?

Hey everyone, been enjoying the discussions on this site for a while and decided to join in.
Any news on Jovo? Am I the only one excited about the possibility of Ellerby getting a chance to play? I’m a big Ellerby fan and I really thought his game was coming around at the end of last season and I wonder if this might be his opportunity to show what he can do. I don’t want to say that he hasn’t got a fair shake this season, but i think he showed last year he was more than a 7th dman
Welcome, Syc :)
Still waiting for official word on Jovo; I called a broken hand last night, but seeing as my predictions are typically wrong…
Almost certainly expect to see Ellerby tomorrow.

You aren’t the only one excited. I’m glad he will be back in the line up. I think this will help the team move forward and win some games along with the return of some forwards too. I’m an ellerby fan myself.

Had a great time at my first Panthers game. Sitting in section 103 I got to see both Cat goals up close. Really got excited at the end when Repik kinda tripped and almost put it in. Awesome time and great crowd, even with tons of Broon fans

In honor of the potential for Ellerby to get some games in (I am incredibly excited about this, by the way! We always need more Ellerby!), I think it is an appropriate time to bust out my very favorite thing Shane Doan has ever said, for those who may not have seen it before or who may have forgotten it or who just need to be reassured that they are still saner than someone out there.
That 5 on 3 was awful

It ended up being a blessing that we got scored on during that 5 on 3, because otherwise Matthias’s breakingoutofthesinbin goal would have been nonexistent. Who knows if we would’ve even gotten a point without their 5 on 3 goal.

Will they ever change that delay of game penalty ruling? Shouldn’t it be up to the referee’s discretion whether it was intended or not? It’s not like much of the game was even delayed…it took all of four seconds to grab a new puck.
That rule and shootouts are my least favorite aspects of the game.

My thoughts on clemmonson from a players point of view:
I’m a hockey player and have spent a number of years playing both goalie and out as a skater, so I know what its like being in both of these situations. I also know what its like to have a good goalie and a bad goalie.
Clemmer is a capable backup in this league and that’s really it. I think players and fans both cringe when they see the Puck coming at clemmer, because they really believe the Puck is going to go in every time he sees a shot. Whether these beliefs are substantial or not, they have the same effect nonetheless. The players fears and lack of trust in clemmer causes them to stray from their game. They become too occupied in their defensive zone trying to do too much to not let shots on goal leaving men open or not giving themselves the opportunity to break out effectively as a result. Personally, I’ve experienced similar feelings and gone through the same pattern of behaviors when trying to “make up” for what my goalie may have been lacking.
Not only that, but clemmonson seems to be very un-clutch. He set a very bad tone early in the game letting that first one through – which was entirely his fault. He was out of position for what should have been a routine blocker save for any NHL goaltender. After that, he picked his game up. However, I don’t think that a goaltender should be receiving the praise he’s getting from some people on here for stepping up and not playing like he did in the first period. He played a good game the rest of the way, but he was not spectacular by any means. He made a few good saves but ended up throwing it away by giving it up in the shootout. Bergerons game saving shootout goal was one clemmer should have had back, had he stayed out of the net and cut off an inch more of angle. He let in a wrist shot that was taken maybe 4 feet out of the net. That’s unacceptable for an NHL goalie. To me, he should be receiving “spectacular” praise when he can play an entire game the way way he played in periods 2 and 3. He shouldn’t be cut any slack just because people have lower expectations of him. Hold him to huger standards, I’m sure if we and the team and organization did that and told him they expected more out of him, we might see an improvement.
Sorry for the rant lol. Agree, disagree?
by lipsonjeff on Jan 17, 2012 12:16 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Agreed. Clemmer had a good recovery, but the first goal on the first shot is inexcusable.
I also believe the team plays differently in front of Clemmer than they do Theodore. Hopefully we’ll get back to winning ways with Theo back.

Once FLA scores three goals in a game and Clemmensen loses we can complain. When the Cats barely average two in a span of games you can expect to lose if your goalie isnt Pekka Rinne or Henrik Lundqvist

Bravo lopsonjeff
Totally agree. I also played between the pipes and watching Clemmenson makes me cringe. He gives up way too many soft goals. I can see why the Panthers are lousy in the shootouts—-too easy to score on their goalies in practice.
Panthers need to ride Theo and his wounded knee as far as possible. Even in back to backs. Glenn HALL PLAYED 502 CONSECUTIVE GAMES IN NET (OVER 800 INCLUDING MINORS). So I am sure Theo could muster 37 starts down the stretch
completely different game completely different era.

I'm SO not used to playoff positioning
Am I really hoping that the Isles, Carolina, and TB win tonight? It makes my stomach upset.
As for the Jets/Devils game…. I’ll root for the refs.
Not wishing injury on any one, but I am SO GLAD Ellerby gets back in line up. Jovo has underachieved most of the year. Like to see Ellerby re-united with Kulikov, and let Weaver baby sit Gudbranson.
The Isles are due...
With that record a Islander win isn’t out of the question.

Don’t know about him being an UFA, Florida has his rights and he’ll be 22 next season.
by Alexander Calloway on Jan 17, 2012 1:35 PM EST up reply actions
if he isn’t signed in a certain period of time after being drafted I think he is eligible to be a UFA. Can’t remember the particulars regarding college players but I am pretty sure that’s the case. With Junior players they go back into the draft, college players become UFA’s.
this should clear things up
“A player not signed by his NHL team within two years of being drafted can re-enter the draft, as long as he is 20 years old or younger at the time of the subsequent draft. Players over 20 become unrestricted free agents.”
NCAA players can become UFAs, but that’s only if the team holding his rights doesn’t sign him to a contract by the beginning of free agency. At least I think the deadline if June 30th.

Just received my SST renewal package. Pretty bad terms this year – no extended payment option (3 months, instead of the traditional 6-12 months they’ve offered in the past), if you don’t renew by 2/13 playoff ticket prices are raised by $8+ per seat and you need to pay in advance instead of on a per game basis. Plus more.
Its like they have a championship team already and tickets are a premium, not one scrambling to make the playoffs.

HA! The writer at the end is making an implication that Matthias could be one of the odd men out when our injured men return.
Clearly, he doesn’t know much about the Panthers. I don’t care if Matthias has a two-way contract, he’s been one of if not the most persistent, consistent, and pesky guys we’ve had this year.

I agree. The guy is all over the place and in a good way. If his scoring touch showed up a bit more he’d be a game changer (I love watching Rask’s reaction to Matty’s goal last night). As it is he has certainly earned the right to stay. Sending him down would send the wrong message.

It gives us pretty damn good chance to make it this year
OTT and NJ are hitting their stride, as of now they’re absolutely playoff bound. WPG is a joke on the road, too.
I’m putting here for reflection later on in the season…. #14 Tomas [Fleischmann] is getting a 40G season. FLASH COUNT: 15G/19A

Not one team in the SE is living up to expectations. FLA the only one exceeding what the ‘experts’ predicted.
