Wednesday Caterwaul: Panthers GameDay Open Forum

From the Nothing To Do With The Above Photo department: Having spent better than six seasons in the Western Conference, Panthers winger Mikael Samuelsson's 16 previous trips to the Pepsi Center have been statistically profitable, collecting 14 points (5G), a plus-6, and 4 assists on the man-advantage at the home of the Avalanche.

Why last night rocked:

  • NYI over WSH, 3-0; 2 goals for Parenteau as Isles stuff Caps in D.C.
  • NJ over WPG, 5-1; Sykora, Clarkson, Elias, Foster all plus-3
  • OTW over TOR, 3-2 (REG); Turris, Alfredsson with 1G/1A
  • TB over BOS, 5-3; pair by Bolts Overlord Horts not enough to salvage state sweep

Why last night jonesed:

  • PIT over CAR, 2-1 (SO); Neal with the Skillz Komp winner
  • NYR over NSH, 3-0; plus-3s for Girardi and McDonagh
  • PHI over MIN, 5-1; Jagr, Read each 2A as Wild continue slide to 8th spot in West

Panthers Playoff Update:

Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla (beyond the obvious):

  • WSH at MTL, 7:30 p.m.; Caps are winners of last two at Bell Centre (and a shutout loser at home vs the Isles last night)

Next up for the Cats:

  • Tonight from Colorado; the LBC Game Thread learned a very important lesson today: never shop east of Beverly Hills...before 9.

Did you know:

  • Panthers have never lost to Avs on a Wednesday in Denver (2 ties & 1 regulation win, that lone victory coming on November 17, 1999...the last such meeting).

Tuesday’s Organizational Transactions:

Tuesday’s NHL Waiver Wire

  • None

we really need a win tonight, with the Hawks coming on Friday. it’s been a rough two weeks and i’ve been trying very hard to talk some people off the ledge. my biggest point – we’ve been struggling for a few weeks and just this week lost grasp of first in the Southeast.

with all the injured guys coming back this week or next, it’s time to go on a nice run here before the all-star break. there’s got to be a trade coming down the road too, right? too many forwards and they can’t really consider Matty down to SA, can they????

by alterego6487 on Jan 18, 2012 8:58 AM EST reply actions

No Matty to SA… but who will go once everyone is healthy (assuming we actually get there)? And what will we do next year with the draft picks turning pro? Interesting questions and roster moves coming up.

by Pilchino on Jan 18, 2012 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

i’m not worrying about next year and the draft picks just yet…. we need to get to May!

Reading up on this Sopa thing and I’m realizing… If it passes the game feeds online that some of you watch could end up disappearing making it harder and harder for some to see an actual game.

Don’t know if it’d effect LBC or any other SBN site directly or not though… The thing kind of reads weird and doesn’t get into detailed specifics.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 18, 2012 9:03 AM EST reply actions

SOPA and PIPA would be much worse than that. LBC and SBN could be shuttered since they aren’t direct licensees of the sports to which they carry coverage. Also, if someone posted a bad link, they would be held responsible not the poster.

Its a really messed up state of affairs, engineered by a bunch of untrustworthy groups and industries who, instead of trying to work within in the system and profit, are trying to rewrite the system in their, twisted, image.

    Seeing Red since 1994.

by coasterg on Jan 18, 2012 9:05 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah I’m reading up on it more.. you know before I’m not able to.. lol

It’s a shame really because you think, Wikipedia for example where many of us get tons of information could be taken down simply because of one post someone may put up. Now I know they are good about checking facts and removing things almost instantly but it could still happen..

Any fansite for the Cats could potentially be taken down which I find to be stupid considering most sports teams welcome such things giving fans a way to communicate with one another etc.. Been going on for decades.

Would this also mean we can’t talk about the Panthers on Twitter anymore since we’re not directly associated with the team and aren’t “official”

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 18, 2012 9:11 AM EST up reply actions

LBC and SBN could be shuttered since they aren’t direct licensees of the sports to which they carry coverage.

On the hockey end, SBN has a working relationship with the NHL (by that I mean there is no “bad blood” between the two, we share content, etc).

Your note about “bad links” – and the potential for direct liability – is true, which is why we got proactive about it last month.

by Donny Rivette on Jan 18, 2012 9:46 AM EST up reply actions

Problem is, the day the NHL has an issue with SBN with no agreement in place then they could use this potential law to limit or shutter SBN or the offending page.

Traditionally, copyright and other intellectual property owners have to enforce their own rights via lawsuit. By flipping this burden to content providers your changing a fundamental part of the intellectual property system. And that change is being done in such a poor manner that it’ll be a mess.

Plus its a violation of our basic rights of expression. Very Chinese and Russian of the media conglomerates and related lobbies IMHO.

Nope! Not if they can be proven to have tacitly endorsed it by not protecting their copyright while being aware of the “violation” beforehand.

SOPA & PIPA will create the biggest firewall and dictate what we are permitted to read/write/sell/etc on the internet. Sign the petition on Google.. we hear the leaders and wanna be leaders of our country talking about less regulation, less government and here they try to take away another form of free expression.

As far as I know, the main problem for user-driven sites, like Wikipedia, is that anything linking away from the site has to be monitored under the bills as they’re currently written and so if you link to a site that links to illegal content, that’s a no-no — which means Twitter’s sunk, plus most avatars and pictures people use and post may only be debatably legal. It’s a mess.

What would be real nice would be to put up five or more in Winnipeg again, too, since that’s one of those wretched back-to-backs we’ve been sucking at so hard this year. It’d be even nicer if Verbeauty once again scored more goals than their entire team managed. (Winnipeg’s had that kind of treatment from a total of 17 players in 12 different games this season. They inspire either awe or giggles in me with that stat.)

This is honestly make or break time for this team. At this point there are 3 ways the season can unfold. 1.) The team can turn around and begin playing like the beginning of the season. 2.) The team will continue to slump and force Tallon to make a trade to acquire a scorer to try to make the playoffs. 3.) Tallon will sit on his hands and wait for the injured players to return hoping their presence will lift the team into a playoff spot. I think we will end up making a significant trade getting rid of some of the extra forwards we are currently carrying. With the way the team is playing I don’t think Tallon will accept sitting back and waiting. We all saw what he did at the beginning of the season when he traded Booth.

During my M.B.A. studies, we were told specifically not to use Wikipedia for any source material. Also, as I put up there, I run a publishing company, and it would take somebody full-time here and a lawyer to try to take down all of the pirated material that is out there. So, I’m torn on this whole situation.

I’m going to guess that the original research was what was being referred to in the original tweet, but you’re exactly right. Wiki is great for things like that.

by angellen on Jan 18, 2012 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

As well you shouldn’t! I love Wiki, I almost always have a tab open with it and if I’m just doing some casual fact-checking about who was on the 2009 Russian WJC team or when John Adams’ birthday is, it’s great. It’s given me some great trails to follow through the citations, too, but it’s not a scholarly source. The reason universities tell their students not to use it is because there are protocols in place with peer-reviewed arguments and theories that just aren’t available to Wikipedia. Even when there are experts editing those pages, they’re going to slip up because there’s not a committee of other experts checking them. Good academic practice never means Wikipedia, even though we all use it.

We’re really missing out on a second line center right now.

If Weiss is not centering Flash and Samuelsson, does that mean it’s gonna be Goc centering Versteeg and Matthias? With Upshall and Kopecky being centered by Madden? Santorelli centering Barch and Bradley?

    Where does Repik fit in?

I can’t see Dineen sitting Repik right now, though. He scored a goal last game, he’s creating scoring chances, he’s been playing well. I’m thinking he might scratch one of the three 4th liners.

by lipsonjeff on Jan 18, 2012 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

Probably don’t need Barch against the Avs, but some guys are going to get sent down and I think Repik might end up being odd-man out.

provided they can sign him. I am excited about Shore’s potential but wouldn’t be surprised if he is dealt at some point if the Panthers need to add a good piece to the NHL roster (just a gut feeling here). We do have Bjugstad and Howden in the pipeline at the center position.

by Todd Little on Jan 18, 2012 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

Howden is a winger and Bjugstad is playing the wing with Minnesota. The depth at center is solid right now, so Shore get a degree and play with his two little brothers next season without the Panthers worrying.

Speaking of injuries.. Such a smart guy that Hall is.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 18, 2012 4:06 PM EST reply actions

That was so not his fault, other than that he wasn’t wearing a helmet which is dumb dumb dumb dumb.

Just about every panther wears theirs during warmup except for a few here and there.. and I believe the Rangers all wear theirs too

Everyone but Versteeg and Kulikov. Uh, and maybe the injured guys, I don’t think I actually got to see the wounded foursome while I was home.

no shootout tonight please. Av’s are 7-0 this season.

I was just listening to Dineen on Sid Rosenburg, he did say that Versteeg is a game-time decision due to possible health issues. He denied that he was unhappy with his play aside from the Pens game, and he stated that having Versteeg on the team is different than a team that doesn’t have VerBeauty.

Hurricanes acquire Evgenii Dadonov and A.J. Jenks from the Florida Panthers in exchange for forwards Jon Matsumoto and Mattias Lindstrom.

    ?!?!?!?!

Wow, didn’t see Dadonov being moved. Dale doesn’t waste time when he doesn’t like someone’s play.

I think they gave him more than enough chances. As long as he doesn’t go Grabner on us.

The guy that we got for Dadonov, Lindstrom, he looks like he actually could be a good player. 18th overall on Carolina’s Top Prospects, a Power Forward, here’s his profile: http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospect/Mattias_Lindstrom
