Friday Caterwaul: Panthers GameDay Open Forum

Notable GMs such as Dale Tallon, Brian Burke and Paul Holmgren should give [Chicago GM Stan] Bowman some competition in his search for a quality defenseman or forward. Senators GM Bryan Murray and Wild GM Chuck Fletcher also will be active. Every day, teams gain more cap space to use by the trade deadline because they only have to pay the acquired player the remaining part of his salary. The Panthers, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues and Nashville Predators already have more cap room than the Hawks.

  • OT: notice the scores of all those games? Spooky.

Playoff Update:

Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla:

  • WSH at CAR, 7 p.m.; Caps 7-1 in last eight vs Canes
  • MTL at PIT, 7; Habs currently 1-6 in past seven on road
  • TB at DAL, 8:30; snooze

Next up for the Cats:

Aim for the flat top!

The Panthers are one point out of third and two points out of ninth. As weird as it is, i kind of like the 1-2-3 division seeding. It adds weirdness.

The Panthers really need two wins this weekend.

Let’s show this prehistoric b—— how we do things Downtown!

Hoping we can break the streak, grab a win in Chi-town and keep that momentum going.

Will there be a benching today? Probably not, since its Chicago.

Help?

Why has it been six years (3 coaching regimes, umpteen players) since this organization has put together a winning streak of more than three freakin games. My recollection is March 2006, 11 game unbeaten streak led by Hall of Famer Joe Niewendyk. Evidently, our current Stanley Cup ring owners, lack the leadership to give us a big winning streak. Look at the streaking teams this year_Ottawa, Anaheim, St. Louis, to name a few. WAKE UP PANTHERS!!!

no way they move P’ville, but a fella can dream can’t he. Really like that guy’s game.
Roy could be an option for the Cats, maybe rescue Vermette from Columbus.
Another guy I’d love to see the Panthers get for a playoff push is Curtis Glencross but the Flames seem like they are going to stay in the race.

They called me a few years back after gettin free tix through Ticketmaster. I went off on the salesman about why I’d NEVER pay for tix again as long as Cohen, Martin, and I think Keenan was still around, were involved in the organization. I ended up having about a 45 minute conversation with him about the things that would go wrong (which did) and he told me he enjoyed talkin to a passionate fan and I haven’t gotten a call since. But he has sent me a christmas card every year since. lol

Not necessarily. If other teams put in a claim, they have to offer to hand him over to them first before they can trade him. But yeah, I’d guess Columbus takes a shot at him. They don’t have much to lose by doing it.

Looking into my crystal ball I see. . .

The Florida Panthers kid line of Huberdeau-Bjugstad-Howden has torn up the NHL, scoring 105 goals-180 assists -285 points. The kidz lead the Panthers to the Presidents Trophy, and ultimately the franchise’s first Stanley Cup.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 20, 2012 1:41 PM EST reply actions

Looks like Skille and Upshall are for sure in tonight with Santorelli scratched. But HF was implying that if Guds wasn’t playing, Bergy would most likely play with either another Dman from San Antonio being called up or Samuelsson (???) playing D. Now that it seems Guds is gonna play, you think Bergy still gets the nod, or is he gonna wait another game or two?

All I know is that the line of Matthias, Skille, and Upshall looks uber promising. A line of Goc, Bergenheim, and Samuelsson also looks quite nice. That would then relegate Kopecky to the fourth line to play with Bradley and Madden, leaving Barch and Santorelli as the odd men out.

I think the Panthers should look for a good second line center (maybe a change of scenery for Ville Leino) and make guys like Santorelli, Barch, Madden, Sturm, and Samuelsson expendable… as well as a couple draft picks if need be. Also, bring back up Repik.

In that case we could have a lineup looking something like this:

Fleischmann-Weiss-Versteeg
Repik-Leino-Bergenheim
Skille-Matthias-Upshall
Kopecky-Goc-Bradley

I’d be pretty confident rolling those 4 lines every night.

Leino looks like a flash in the pan. Three goals, $4 mil/yr

by bearcat30 on Jan 20, 2012 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

Yea, I know… but the guy has the talent to succeed… He’s having a bad time with a team that has 0 confidence right now. He’s not worth much right now on the trade market and I’m sure that if the Sabres as looking to shake things up, that could be something that could happen. We’ve got a lot of cap space and it makes us a better team. A change of scenery could do good things for a guy with the tools to do well. He just needs to find it.

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

He’s having a bad time with a team that has 0 confidence right now. He’s not worth much right now on the trade market and I’m sure that if the Sabres as looking to shake things up, that could be something that could happen.

And we have a line up that frankly is murky at the center position, after Weiss none of our centers are really second line material and we have quite a few of them in the organization right now. Leino would really only compound the problem of having too many bodies and adds $4 million that we then wouldn’t be able to move if needed.

Hockey is a business, only we fans love it as a game.

by JDMorris on Jan 20, 2012 1:59 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that we’re murky at Center, but I think Leino is the most capable of filling the second line center hole. I really, really believe he has the ability to do it. I think he has the potential to live up to that salary.

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

there are other guys I’d go after than Leino. hell I’d rather take Derek Roy off Buffalo’s hands.

by Todd Little on Jan 20, 2012 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

I’m trying to find a list of this years popular trade pieces that are particularly CENTERS, but I can’t seem to find anything…

I’d probably make another pick that wasn’t Leino if I had something else to look at. It’s hard to think of someone right off the top of my head (especially that’s also potentially on the trading block and within our reach with what we’re willing to deal right now).

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

There may be some competition there

As I suspect that Roy might be among the Blackhawk’s wishlist, along with Derik Brassard.

I would think Vermette can be taken out of Columbus

by Todd Little on Jan 20, 2012 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

I would be more than happy doing that. Any center in the league who has consecutively strung together 40+ point seasons is a solid second line center in my book.

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

Eh, you guys can have him,

would be totally uninterested in having Vermette as a Blackhawk. Seen enough of him over the last couple of years to see that he has plenty of quit in him, certainly enough so that I wouldn’t be interested in having him until 2015.

Let’s compile a list of centers that are either potentially on the trading block or are upcoming UFAs

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

just a suggestion on AV. Speaking more to his likely availability rather than my like of him as a player. Unfortunately there a still a lot of teams in the playoff chase even if a few of them are really pretenders so it’s hard to judge who would be a likely target for a team like the Cats or Hawks. Even teams like Buffalo or Carolina are just a 5 game winning streak away from getting back into it.

by Todd Little on Jan 20, 2012 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

Looking through some teams who might be looking to sell….

Kyle Brodziak or Matt Cullen out of Minnesota?

Hey DMD – think the Blackhawks would ever consider trading Dave Bolland for more scoring depth at wing?

Sam Gagner out of Edmonton

Vermette and Brassard out of Colombus

Tuomo Ruutu out of Carolina

Roy or Leino out of Buffalo

Ryan Getzlaf lolz (I can dream, right?)

Kyle Wellwood out of the ’Peg

Cody Hodgson out of Vancouver

Tim Conolly or Grabovski out of Toronto

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

No way in the world VAN is selling Hodgson

I’m putting here for reflection later on in the season…. #14 Tomas [Fleischmann] is getting a 40G season. FLASH COUNT: 15G/19A

Brodziak is more a third or fourth liner.

Gagner is losing out on a numbers game.

Ruutu plays the wing better than down the middle.

Most of the others, while not untouchable, are highly unlikely to be dealt. And Connolly spends more time on the IR than on the ice.

by MrOmnipotent on Jan 21, 2012 4:01 AM EST up reply actions

why on God's Green Earth would the Hawks trade Bolland?

Especially for depth at the WINGS!?!

At center we really only have Bolland and Toews, yet on the wings we have Sharp, Kane, Hossa, Brunette, Stalberg, Shaw (apparently), Hayes (apparently), etc.

Hell, Sharp’s been hurt for two weeks, and even though he is an All Star we have hardly missed him because we have so much scoring depth at the wings.

Think before you speak.

Yeah.. only I’d prefer to see Kopecky on the second line and throw Madden at center with matthias on wing

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 20, 2012 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

I think Kopecky is really a good third line guy. On the second line, you’re asking him to do too much offensively, which is tough for him. He has certain second line skills, but not the second line scoring production.

Also, if you throw Madden in at center on the third line and Matthias over to wing, are you bumping bumping down to the fourth line? And from the fourth line who are you bumping off the starting roster?

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

repik to the ahl… upshall down to the 4th. he’s returning from injury and his play to start the season doesnt warrant minutes better than 4th line.

I didn’t mean right this second but down the line this season when everyone’s back at their original form.

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

which still doesnt warrant giving upshall better than 4th line minutes based on how he played when he was healthy.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 20, 2012 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

I think Upshall is more than capable of playing 3rd line minutes. He’s not going to suck forever. He has a proven track record and it’s not like he’s old. He just wasn’t playing with the right fire and energy, and he was also playing a lot with Booth (who’s now gone). I think he’s gonna come back much stronger.

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

by Todd Little on Jan 20, 2012 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

I think they can. If ALL THREE of those guys are using their speed and crashing hard at the net, they’re bound to score. If you seperate them, maybe not. But combined effort, I see there being some success there.

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

hope so, Matthias seems to coming into his own but Skille is one of the worst finishers I’ve seen in sometime and Upshall wasn’t doing much before he got hurt but his can definitely do it.

by Todd Little on Jan 20, 2012 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. But I think Upshall is going to find his game. He knows how bad he was earlier in the year and I think he’s gonna come back with some more urgency. Hell, his best linemate got sent packing… so I think he might get it a bit more now.

Also, with the whole second line center thing… I think the reason we can’t string together a real winning streak is because of our inconsistency scoring goals. I don’t think that problem is going to change if we have Goc, Matthias, or Santorelli playing second line center (no offense to them). We’ve got to pick someone up who has shown he can put up numbers and produce. It’s definitely our biggest hole to be filled heading into the offseason. That, and resigning the likes of Kuli, Garrison, and Versteeg.

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 2:44 PM EST up reply actions

been a problem all year. One I thing I don’t like about any of our current centers is that none of them are great passers not even Weiss who is good but not an elite playmaker.

by Todd Little on Jan 20, 2012 2:48 PM EST up reply actions

Yea, it’s true. Hubs is going to make a big different next year with his vision on the ice. Outside of Bjugstad and Shore though (and Trochek?), we don’t have much prospect depth for top line Centers.

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

Wow, you’re not asking for much, are you? Bjugstad is a beast. Shore is likely to be a second-line center, but a good one, and Trocheck I think is going to be a really good NHLer. I love that kid’s play.

Behind those three are a pile of good two-way center prospects: Knight, Brickley, Kosov. The Panthers are just loaded at center depth.

ha ha, thought the same thing, if Bjugstad and Shore pan out the Panthers will be pretty set at center but I think he means can any of those guys be a first line center. One little knock for me on Bjugstad (and I am seriously nit-picking here) is not a lot of assists. I like my top two centers to have serious passing skills. Was not impressed bu his performance at the WJC either. Looked great against the minnows and just OK against more serious competition but that could be said against the whole US team.

by Todd Little on Jan 20, 2012 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

Don't Worry About the Assists

Bjugstad’s offensive role for Minny is to score. He is a capable puck handler and sees the game fine, so his assists will come.

Last weekend’s matchup with UND and Minn was great hockey, and Bjugstad’s opening goal on Saturday night was tremendous. A great set-up pass by Rau, and a serious power move and deft stickhandling left Dell hopeless to stop the shot. That was some fun hockey to watch.

Even if JUST Bjugstad and Huberdeau pan out the way we expect over the next two seasons and everyone else busts, we can put together a pretty unreal lineup with Weiss, Bjugstad, Matthias, and Goc playing center

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

Not to mention Flash, Steeger, Bergenheim, Upshall, Skille, and Kopecky + other prospects and potentials signings playing the wing

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

Don’t get me wrong, BF or Todd, I love Bjugstad and I do think he’s a beast. I’m also really impressed with what Shore and Trochek are doing this season. I just don’t feel like we have that “sure thing” top line NHL center the way the Oilers have got with RNH or Tampa got with Stamkos . I feel like Bjugstad still has the ability to not pan out. I just don’t have that unwavering confidence in our center prospects the way I do in someone like Hubs being able to be a beast or a long time.

by Todd Little on Jan 20, 2012 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

he is Panther property until he finishes playing college hockey whether it’s this season or next season.

by Todd Little on Jan 20, 2012 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

Oh… well it looks almost certain that he’s going to play his senior season so I don’t think we’ll be signing him this offseason. Looks like we’re gonna have to wait another year.

You think after four years of college hockey we’re gonna see him play in the AHL first or come right in to contribute?

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

Shore’s little brother Quinten is joining the team next fall, so Drew will have a chance to play with both Nick and Quinten if he stays for his senior season.

Don’t fret yet, though, about his rights. The Panthers have time to sign him.

It just wouldn’t make sense on either side of the equation to me if he went into UFA. Usually, it’s almost NHL prospect code that you sign your first ever contract with the team that drafted you unless they actually let you go themselves. I’d be shocked if Tallon let a talent like Shore go (even though he’s not a “Tallon Pick”), and I also wouldn’t see why Shore wouldn’t wanna sign here, as we do have him in our future plans.

by lipsonjeff on Jan 20, 2012 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

what your saying is true most of the time but is not code as defined by the CBA. If Shore plays next year it will be four years since the Panthers drafted him that’s why he can become a UFA. If he was a junior the Panthers would have 2 years to sign him or he’d go back into the draft.

by Todd Little on Jan 20, 2012 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed Skille hasnt shown much, but he is one of the hardest working guys on the team and he could put up some points forechecking hard and getting the puck to matty and upshall. Besides, even if they dont put up a lot of points, i could see them being really hard to play against and thats half the battle right there.
