Saturday Caterwaul: Panthers GameDay Open Forum
"[The Panthers have] a lot of offensive punch, I think. They've got some guys who can put the puck in the net. We're going to have to be on top of our game defensively and making sure we're not turning the puck over.”
- Jets blueliner Mark Stuart (#5 above), proving the old adage that hockey players don’t read the papers, via the Winnipeg Free Press

Why last night rocked:
- CAR over WSH, 3-0; huh? 2 PP and 1 SHG for Canes in stunner
Why last night jonesed:
- PIT over MTL, 5-4 (SO); gold stars for everyone! 1G/1A for Letang in return from injury
Panthers Playoff Update:
- FLA lost to CHI 1-3, playoff odds down 5.3 to 68.4% per Sports Club Stats
Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla (beyond the obvious):
- NYR at BOS, 1 p.m.
- PHI at NJ, 1
- OTW at ANH, 4
- MTL at TOR, 7
- CAR at NYI, 7
- BUF at STL, 8
- TB at PHX, 8
Next up for the Cats:
Tonight from Da Peg (no local TV); for those of you just joining us, the LBC Game Thread will be teaching poodles how to fly at 6:30.
Did you know:
Prior to the last game between WPG/ATL & FLA (a 5-2 Panthers victory on November 10) seven straight meetings were decided by one goal: three in regulation, three SO and one OT. Cats were 2-5 over the stretch.
Friday’s Organizational Transactions:
- F Michal Repik cleared waivers in reassignment to San Antonio
- Forwards Scottie Upshall, Sean Bergenheim and Jack Skille returned to the lineup Friday

Naming Lupul as an alt captain is just a charity to Kessel to ensure he’s not picked last again without actually making it look like a charity by giving Kessel the position himself.
Why were their only 2 named? Someone forget to mention the other 2?
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 21, 2012 12:26 PM EST reply actions
I was thinking the same thing. But Kessel got a car out of being picked last…
by Hawkseye on Jan 21, 2012 12:41 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
It’s the only reason he would be named an Alt ahead of Campbell, Iginla, Hossa etc..
I didnt mention either of the Sedins or stamkos etc because I don’t see those guys ever being named capt or alts because it’s more fun to see where they fall in an actual draft.

Pavek Datsyuk wants to be picked last because he wants the car.

Shameless repost
But I figured more eyes would land here than on a day-old recap and I’m trying to talk myself off the ledge…
I can’t believe I’m doing this, but I’m going to find a bright spot even though after the Colorado game, I vowed to not watch the Chicago for fear it would ruin my Friday night. Of course I watched the first period anyway….
We’re currently 8th. That’s a playoff spot. We’re a point up on Toronto, who hasn’t exactly looked like they’re in any more of a position to be on a hot streak than we are. Behind them? Winnipeg (8 points in their last 10 games), Buffalo (6 points in last 10), and Montreal (8 points in last 10). Not exactly the streaking teams we need to worry about. Yet. Despite the slump, the Panthers have 9 points from our last 10, better than those teams behind us. And despite the slump, we are actually still tied for the division lead. Go figure. And 5 of our next 6 games are against teams we are tied with or below us in the standings (2 vs ‘peg, 2 vs Was, 1 vs TB). The team is starting to get healthy. Who says this isn’t the right time to get our full roster back, get some confidence against supposedly weaker teams, and get back on track? Sure, they’ve hit a rut. But it’s a rut in mid-January, and we’re still tied for the division lead and inside the playoff bubble. If you told me that about this team in September, I’d have been OK with it. Listening to the "experts" calling for a 14th, 15th place finish, I started to believe them. And yea, the first couple months were awesome. But let’s not jump the ship quite yet. At least wait and see where we stand in mid-February before we go all "south Florida" on them.
I haven’t paid attention enough to notice if Matthias is a wing option, but I’d love to see him up top with Flash and Weiss, let his speed and size open some lanes for the snipers. Let Versteeg try to find some room with Upshall and Skille banging at rebounds. Just something different than what we’ve seen. And if we can at least tread water and keep pace the next couple weeks, Columbus is going to have some top 2 line caliber weapons for sale, and probably some other bottom dwellers as well… I’m not quite at the playoffs or bust this season mode, but I’m getting close. If we can keep most of those offensive draft picks we’ve had the last couple summers (Bjugstad, Howden, Huberdeau, Rau, etc…) out of a deal, I’d be up for something rather big.
Matty on the wing. Hmmm.

no TV… damn I wanted to DVR this one and watch it tomorrow. I’ll have to tune into the QAM tonight and listen while driving around.
Center ice package really is worth it if you have the extra cash (can be made in payments) you can watch all of the untelevised cats games as well as every other game in the league if you wanted.

I am going to urge myself to stop panicking and repeat something the players and coaches have been saying for 3 months now.
“There’s still a lot of hockey left.”
This was an acceptable phrase when the Cats had an 8 point cushion on the SE lead and they were trying not to get too ahead of themselves. It is now an acceptable phrase while the Cats have hit a rough patch and need to battle back. There is still time. The season is not lost. The injured boys are back and the team will start to find their game. And if not, there is always alcohol to be consumed.
Tweet me! @srgrossman
If we finish above 72 points it’s still an improvement over last season and ahead of the pace Tallon set as GM in Chicago.

D Bogosian and his 8 points (3G) in 17 games vs FLA is back. But hey…no Kane, right?

We were thinking of heading over, since it’s relatively close, it’s just a matter of having the kids out in public after 8:30
the only way a watch party would be ‘relatively’ close for me is if they relocated the current watch parties 60-90min south of where theyre at now.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 21, 2012 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

I know you live further north… but i really wish the cats would stop saying they relocated to be more ‘central’ when every watch party or event they have is in ft laudy/palm beach. Kendall Ice arena skate was the first thing theyve had down here in years.

They’ve had like one in FTL. And one Panthers LIVE in North Miami Beach. Pretty much everything else is north of the arena. I’m in southeast Broward and they’re usually pretty far from here too.
Anyway, yeah, watch party in the living room. Got 4 games at 7:00, 3 at 8:00, 2 now and a few late, have 2 pizza doughs rising on the stove and a fridge full of beer.
