Sunday Caterwaul: Panthers Open Forum

"The hard part of the game for me was the fact we gave [Florida] three free goals. For me that was really disappointing. We had clear possession of the puck three times in our D-zone with really not a lot of pressure and we served up three pizzas that ended up in our net.”

- Jets head coach Claude Noel via the Winnipeg Free Press

  • PHI over NJ, 4-1
  • MTL over TOR, 3-1
  • ANH over OTW, 2-1 (REG)

Why last night jonesed:

  • TB over PHX, 4-3 (REG); doesn't really even count as a "jones"

Why today is a Big Deal in SoFla:

  • WSH at PIT, 12:30; Caps have won 8 straight at Pens
  • BOS at PHI, 3; Broons are 10-2 in last 12 in Philly

Next up for the Cats:

  • Hosting Philadelphia Tuesday; the LBC Game Thread will be packing an iron at 7

too bad he didn’t know that if you win 1 playoff game in three series there has to be 13 games, not 12. gotta love when they do that

2 points clear of the Laffs and tentatively 2 points up on the Caps.
I don’t count my game in hand chickens until they hatch.
Much better Panther mood as I read this a.m.’s caterwaul.

Haven’t looked at the standings much lately but just did and…

Holy [Explitive deleted]! Edmonton is back on their way to yet another #1 overall pick!

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 22, 2012 11:37 AM EST reply actions

Looks like they may have to battle it out with Columbus…

by OldDave on Jan 22, 2012 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

I got my money on Columbus pulling ahead. Mason has been horrible but I have some faith he’ll have a game or two like a few years ago still left in him

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 22, 2012 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

Columbus would be wise to play Mason if they want the #1 pick, Sanford has been much better.

by Todd Little on Jan 22, 2012 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

The first time I read that, I saw Ranford and thought there’s no way that a 50-year old Bill Ranford is still in the NHL. Then I chuckled at myself because Bill Ranford at 50 might be able to start in Columbus.

sad, my out West team is falling like a stone. Playing some bad hockey.

by Todd Little on Jan 22, 2012 11:51 AM EST up reply actions

I’m fine with it, based off of tweets from the start of the season between me and an edmonton player who shall remain nameless :]

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 22, 2012 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

Meanwhile, one of mine is rising like a phoenix!

(No, not the Coyotes, the Ducks. Coyotes need to as well, though.)

The Florida Panthers have become Chicago's retirement home. This is oddly fitting.

by BadLuckCharm on Jan 22, 2012 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

At some point, you have to assume that the kids get healthy out there for an entire season and the West gets flipped upside down as they rampage through the conference. But man, a Nail-RNH-Hall line would be some kind of legendary.

Also, you have to assume they get some defense, but I’m sure that’ll happen.

by angellen on Jan 22, 2012 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

defense is deep in this years draft.. but then again their GM is horrible so we all know he won’t draft based on needs.. take nail.. keep Khabi in goal.. finish with the #1 overall again 4th straight year.

usually that kind of work gets one fired.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 22, 2012 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

They won’t even have to worry about drafting defensemen at this rate. The way they’re going, they’ll have an excess of like 146 consecutive first overall picks (all of whom are forwards, duh) and they’ll just start trading those guys for the defensemen they need.

by lipsonjeff on Jan 22, 2012 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

The price tag is too high. They’ve proven that each of the past 2 years when they had #1 overall and asked for a kings ransom + more for the pick to trade down one to two spots.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 22, 2012 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

They have some good D prospects on the way but need to get better on the NHL roster and an upgrade in goal who be a good idea.

by Todd Little on Jan 22, 2012 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

Their second first rounder last draft was a Dman so they don’t always go forward.

by Todd Little on Jan 22, 2012 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

The one thing I don’t like about last night is the notion that people think the Panthers have ended their slump. I think winning more than 1 at a time would then warrant that. How about one of those fancy, new fangled winning streaks I’ve been hearing about? I heard even the Anaheim Ducks and New York Islanders are into them, they get ones that are 4 games long.

Fish, Heatles, Cats, Fins, Noles

by National Mario on Jan 22, 2012 12:09 PM EST reply actions

The Ducks are a GREAT team.. to imply that it’s crazy they would find a winning streak when we can’t is kind of insulting to their lineup. They started the season bad, big deal.. so did they Bruins, they just found it sooner.

btw, How would one win more than one at a time when theyre only capable of playing one at a time.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 22, 2012 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

It is an insult to their lineup. They are supposed to be better. Especially compared to last year. It’s an insult to both lineups if you think about it.

Fish, Heatles, Cats, Fins, Noles

by National Mario on Jan 22, 2012 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

I bet you they finish pushing for a playoff spot.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 22, 2012 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

I really don’t care if the Ducks finish pushing. But they were a team playing bad and they found a way to get 4 game winning streak. Something the Panthers can’t seem to do. Don’t care how good the Ducks players are, they were sucking it this season earlier. Just the facts. Much like how the Panthers are sucking it now.

Fish, Heatles, Cats, Fins, Noles

by National Mario on Jan 22, 2012 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, they sucked for quite a while.

They got the coach fired, then Boudreau couldn’t get them going for a while. If I must be honest, I doubt he even has anything to do with the winning streak, either. I think the team just woke up like they always do late in the season. Anaheim ALWAYS starts terribly, but make a miraculous push at the end. I think Selanne opening up on the work ethic of the team especially hit home.

Selanne isn’t going anywhere (Sorry, Winnipeg, but he LAUGHED at the idea of wanting to go back there), and he deserves at least one last shot at the Cup. I hope the team gives it to him.

The Florida Panthers have become Chicago's retirement home. This is oddly fitting.

by BadLuckCharm on Jan 22, 2012 7:09 PM EST up reply actions

And honestly?

If the Panthers made the finals against Anaheim?

I’d have a tough time rooting for Florida. Probably still would, but would not be disappointed at ALL even if they got swept again.

The Florida Panthers have become Chicago's retirement home. This is oddly fitting.

by BadLuckCharm on Jan 22, 2012 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

Anaheim vs Florida. The nightmare finals for NBC and all Canadian teams.

Fish, Heatles, Cats, Fins, Noles

by National Mario on Jan 22, 2012 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

Only worse potential tv ratng draws involving the Panthers would be a series with Nashville or Phoenix. Maybe Stars, but they still have some nostalgic fans back north. If Florida is to become a popular team in the ratings, they’re gonna have to play Vancouver, Detroit, or Chicago in a Cup finals, and put a serious hurtin on them.

by MrOmnipotent on Jan 22, 2012 11:22 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, nice that they won but the Jets outplayed them.

by Todd Little on Jan 22, 2012 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

The old cliche, “they were tired” is B.S.! Come on, these guys are young, supposedly in shape by now, only have to “work” 82 nights a year for around 13-25 minutes. Get off that excuse. I will trade places with them any time, anyplace.

by bearcat30 on Jan 22, 2012 12:19 PM EST reply actions

Just curious, have you ever played competitive hockey? I know when I played in rec leagues back in the 90’s, I was more tired after playing a game, than I was after running on a soccer field for 90 minutes in school. And I was in shape, as I rode a bicycle everywhere around North Broward/South Palm Beach. Hockey is a strenuous sport, and then you have other factors like travel and this being the sick time of the year. That affects you no matter your age.

Does any one wonder what Bradley was thinking when he let Antropov walk right in a score the second goal. Should have put him on his butt. But, he just kept backing away and gave the guy a perfect shooting lane.
