Monday Caterwaul: Panthers Open Forum
Florida forward Stephen Weiss is 6 assists short of tying franchise single-season leader Viktor Kozlov, who collected 53 helpers in 1999-'00.
UPDATE: Since I awoke this morning at the conclusion of the 2008-'09 season, Weiss was 6 assists away. He is most definitely not at 47 assists this year. Yet. Egg on da face!

Why last night rocked:
- PIT over WSH, 4-3 (OT); thinnest possible "rocked" qualification, but beats the alternative
Panthers Playoff Update:
- FLA did not play; playoff odds down 0.02 to 77% per Sports Club Stats
Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla:
- WPG at CAR, 7 p.m.; Jets have handily won all three so far, but last meeting was early December
- NYI at TOR, 7
- OTW at LA, 10:30
Next up for the Cats:
Hosting Philly tomorrow; the LBC Game Thread ponders the approximate dry weight of the Madagascan fruit tree bat at 7.
Did you know:
Flyers & Panthers haven't played beyond regulation since January 16, 2009, a 3-2 shootout victory by Philly in Sunrise.
On the Table:
SBN looks at Tallon repeating his own professional history...a Q&A with Coach Dineen via JuniorHockey.com...food is tasting better these days in San Antonio...PD on Pucks And Paws.

I could not possibly eat another bite of this delicious cake pie
I hereby predict Captain Mike Weaver #43 will score 6G 20A -RCR 0G10A 1/17
Be impeccable with your word, don't take anything personally, don't make assumptions, always do your best...
With the trade deadline approaching quickly, and assuming Tallon will be a big time buyer to push this team into the playoffs, I was curious to find out who everyone thought they should target and what they should be willing to give up. I think our first round pick should be in play. What say you?
might not part with a first as they are short high picks in the next draft due to the Versteeg trade (I think).
I say go for it, we have enough good prospects coming. To me (although it might not matter in the long run) making the playoffs this year is huge for the franchise. I just don’t know how much that is going to affect the game plan at the deadline.
by Todd Little on Jan 23, 2012 11:25 AM EST up reply actions
We had a third rounder from the Sharks that is Philly’s now for Versteeg and we can either give them our 2012 second rounder or our 2013 one as the other part of that, though I’m not sure when that decision has to be made by.
cool, didn’t realize the 3rd rounder belonged to SJ originally.
thanks for clearing that up.

They’re not allowed. Teams have to shut down.
Of course, the coach can always leave some instruction for the team captains and they can informally meet for some workouts during the break…

A lot of rumours out there that Jeff Carter might be available and even though hes having an off year, (i think it has a lot to do with being stuck in columbus), I would love to see him in a cats sweater. I think with him and weiss in the fold, 2 legitimate scoring lines could be created and would take the pressure off guys like kopecky and goc who arent big point getters in the first place.
I’d take Carter depending on how much would have to go back.
by Todd Little on Jan 23, 2012 12:21 PM EST up reply actions
How bout Drew Stafford? A wing with size that can score. I think he would be a steal! Jeff Carter’s contract costs 50% more and is 100% longer. Plus I think he would command a much greater ransom.
The Versteeg deal brings Philly a 2nd and a 3rd; the 3rd is for this years draft and the 2nd is for this years or next years draft; Panthers choice

I wanted to punch him for that one. I mean, I often feel like punching Harvey, but that one especially.
I don’t trust most of what he says until i see someone else also reporting it. I mentioned something regarding a trade but I wasnt falling into the whole “maybe kuli got traded” thing.
It would have been announced before the practice anyway if they knew they would be sitting him prior to starting because of it

pretty impressive for Weiss to be nearing that stat
…since he doesn’t have Pavel Bure to pass pucks to. Flash and Verbeauty are good and all, but they’re not Bure.
Florida forward Stephen Weiss is 6 assists short of tying franchise single-season leader Viktor Kozlov, who collected 53 helpers in 1999-’00.
53 – 23 = 6?
Am I missing something in this math?

I’m not one for political discussion or anything but whether you like the president or his policies or whatever the case may be, don’t act like a child. Sure it’s his right to choose not to go etc, but it also makes him look immature. He’s a US citizen and should be there for the purpose of being there for his country.

Jordan Eberle got added to the All-Star roster to replace Mikko Koivu. Versteeg has been snubbed yet again.
Kris Letang was also added also.

Eberle’s numbers are better than Versteegs. But I do think Garrison got snubbed again. Letang only has 3 more points then he does.. but 9 less goals.

You know what, I am really glad that our guys are going to get a chance to rest up. It would have been nice to have a better presence but we must think playoffs first. The way we looked against Peg really showed that. Let’s rest up, then push and make the playoffs, get the monkey of our backs then next year let’s send like five players.
A lil thunder and a lil lightning is what the Cats are going to bring this year.
Remaining Schedule - Good News!
I know there aren’t any “easy” games but….
The Panthers play teams currently ranked..
1-8 in their conference: 15 times
9-15 in their conference: 20 times
Also….
The Panthers have completed the season series vs. NYR and play BOS one more time (at home).
The Capitals still play BOS ALL 4 TIMES and play NYR twice (BOTH AT MSG).
Awesome ! I was hoping to compare our rivals’ schedules but never had the time…

Suspended for three regular season games, and he’ll be still be lauded by the league as a superhero in Ottawa, regardless of his multiple-offender status.
Crosby’s absence is further-reaching than I had anticipated.

Toews will not be there, kind of sad but guys gotta heal up for the push.
Hartnell or Neal probably getting that spot.

In 2009 NHL suspended Lidstrom and Datsyuk for not attending ASG in Mtl. A softer and gentler approach this time around.
