Florida forward Stephen Weiss is 6 assists short of tying franchise single-season leader Viktor Kozlov, who collected 53 helpers in 1999-'00.

UPDATE: Since I awoke this morning at the conclusion of the 2008-'09 season, Weiss was 6 assists away. He is most definitely not at 47 assists this year. Yet. Egg on da face!

Why last night rocked:

  • PIT over WSH, 4-3 (OT); thinnest possible "rocked" qualification, but beats the alternative

Panthers Playoff Update:

Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla:

  • WPG at CAR, 7 p.m.; Jets have handily won all three so far, but last meeting was early December
  • NYI at TOR, 7

Hosting Philly tomorrow; the LBC Game Thread ponders the approximate dry weight of the Madagascan fruit tree bat at 7.

Flyers & Panthers haven't played beyond regulation since January 16, 2009, a 3-2 shootout victory by Philly in Sunrise.

With the trade deadline approaching quickly, and assuming Tallon will be a big time buyer to push this team into the playoffs, I was curious to find out who everyone thought they should target and what they should be willing to give up. I think our first round pick should be in play. What say you?

I would love a Neal type acquisition. Something that will benefit us now and going forward. No rentals please.

might not part with a first as they are short high picks in the next draft due to the Versteeg trade (I think).
I say go for it, we have enough good prospects coming. To me (although it might not matter in the long run) making the playoffs this year is huge for the franchise. I just don’t know how much that is going to affect the game plan at the deadline.

by Todd Little on Jan 23, 2012 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

We had a third rounder from the Sharks that is Philly’s now for Versteeg and we can either give them our 2012 second rounder or our 2013 one as the other part of that, though I’m not sure when that decision has to be made by.

by angellen on Jan 23, 2012 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

a Neal type acquisition would be nice. Didn’t work out much for the Pens last season but it is sure looking real good now. Hopefully some more teams will drop out of the race in the next 3-4 weeks. Right now a lot of teams are still in the chase even if some of them are kidding themselves.

by Todd Little on Jan 23, 2012 11:27 AM EST reply actions

A lot of rumours out there that Jeff Carter might be available and even though hes having an off year, (i think it has a lot to do with being stuck in columbus), I would love to see him in a cats sweater. I think with him and weiss in the fold, 2 legitimate scoring lines could be created and would take the pressure off guys like kopecky and goc who arent big point getters in the first place.

by Sycamore on Jan 23, 2012 11:32 AM EST reply actions

I don’t think South Beach is the best place to have Jeff Carter real close to.

by angellen on Jan 23, 2012 11:35 AM EST up reply actions

good point, but maybe being shipped out of philly was a bit of a wake up call for him

by Sycamore on Jan 23, 2012 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

I’d take Carter depending on how much would have to go back.

by Todd Little on Jan 23, 2012 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

How bout Drew Stafford? A wing with size that can score. I think he would be a steal! Jeff Carter’s contract costs 50% more and is 100% longer. Plus I think he would command a much greater ransom.
The Versteeg deal brings Philly a 2nd and a 3rd; the 3rd is for this years draft and the 2nd is for this years or next years draft; Panthers choice

Sure it’s his right to choose not to go etc, but it also makes him look immature. He’s a US citizen and should be there for the purpose of being there for his country.

I know there aren’t any “easy” games but….
The Panthers play teams currently ranked..
1-8 in their conference: 15 times
9-15 in their conference: 20 times

Also….
The Panthers have completed the season series vs. NYR and play BOS one more time (at home).
The Capitals still play BOS ALL 4 TIMES and play NYR twice (BOTH AT MSG).

#FlaPanthers recall defenseman Tyson Strachan from @sarampage ow.ly/8DyY1 #NHL #AHL

Sad that Yonkman didn’t get the call, Robak I understand since he’s headed off to the All-Star Game shortly.

Though he is technically signed with us, Yonkman is kinda SA’s property being captain and all. At least Strachan has a little more experience from last year with STL

Explanation of Strachan’s play style courtesy of SARampage_Voice, otherwise known as Dan Weiss: Solid in his own zone, can play physical when needed. Hit or miss offensively, but has a cannon. Hands down our best d-man.

so where does this put the defensive pairings?

Campbell-Garrison

Guddy-Weaver/Strachan

Ellerby-Weaver/Strachan

?

by adam1991 on Jan 23, 2012 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

Weaver and Strachan played together in STL, I assume Dineen will unite them

Plus he won’t want to put him with a rookie, so it won’t be him and Gudbranson out there. Guessing it will be Weaver-Strachan even strength and Weaver-Ellerby on the PK.

I think Campbell-Ellerby on the PK. Can’t see breaking up Garrison and Weaver there.

Terrific story on Dineen via the PB Post. Yeah…the Post.

Really just incredible.. I can’t imagine how anyone could give less than 110% every night to play for Dineen. We don’t have anyone on the team who has that amount of tenacity & spitfire…. We are missing that finisher, he’s behind the bench.

I hereby predict Captain Mike Weaver #43 will score 6G 20A -RCR 0G10A 1/17

Appears they only beat good teams, maybe the better teams underestimate Tavares and the ilsenets

by adam1991 on Jan 23, 2012 9:37 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Ovie is apparently threatening to remove himself from the all star game because of his suspension? Apparently the NHL REALLY wants him to be there..

NHL should make itself a new policy stating that they WILL NOT negotiate in hostage situations.

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 23, 2012 10:38 PM EST reply actions

Should be an automatic that he’s not allowed to participate.

Suspended for three regular season games, and he’ll be still be lauded by the league as a superhero in Ottawa, regardless of his multiple-offender status.

Crosby’s absence is further-reaching than I had anticipated.

OT of Ovie

But ASG related…

Toews will not be there, kind of sad but guys gotta heal up for the push.

Hartnell or Neal probably getting that spot.

@DarrenDreger
In 2009 NHL suspended Lidstrom and Datsyuk for not attending ASG in Mtl. A softer and gentler approach this time around.
