2012 NHL All-Star Game - LBC Open Thread
At least we've got a legitimate reason to watch this one. Soup makes his fourth ASG appearance today, and should see some considerable minutes for what that's worth in an "event" such as this. NBC-SN & CBC with the call(s) at 4 p.m.
Note: daily Caterwauls will return Tuesday; keep your eyes open for a couple of special items here tomorrow :)

They could have had the figure skating followed by the All-Star game while putting the Cutting Edge quadrilogy on NBC-SN. They might get the same ratings on Vs as the movies would.
by MrOmnipotent on Jan 29, 2012 4:25 PM EST up reply actions
Or they could have shown Caddyshack on both and recorded some real ratings

NBC, such class today. Bull riding followed by figure skating. Both are really draw in the viewers, like the All-Star game would, and I’ve watch both today and didn’t notice a mention of the All-Star game all day.

Kinda off topic, but since I’m watchin an illegal stream of the game, the EU signed the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, which is views by some to be more oppressive than SOPA or PIPA, and the negotiations behind were all done in secrecy. USA had signed it in Oct 2010 without anyone really knowin about it.
That one’s news to me. Brand it any flowery way you choose, still a bad deal.

I still fond memories of the ASG down here. I got my section to scream “Hit somebody” (My gf at the time proceeded to hit me) and have it slowly spread around the upper level, until Roenick laid what might have been the first recorded hit in an ASG. First ASG to feature a shoot-out as well. Ok, so the shoot-out should be reserved for the skills competition, but still. It was first done in Sunrise. Or maybe that’s another reason for Northerners to hate us. (I need a perplexed emote)
Sure would be nice to have another big-time event like that down here again. Short of the SCF I don’t see it happening, after hosting the Draft (‘01) and ASG (’03) within three years.
Tho CBJ just got next year’s ASG, only 6 years removed from hosting the draft.

From Wikipedia… With Ottawa set to host in 2012 for the first time, and Columbus in 2013, Anaheim, Phoenix, Nashville, and Winnipeg will be the only current NHL cities that have not yet hosted an NHL All-Star Game.
Montreal is the only city to have hosted two ASG in the last 20 years, so I gots the feeing I’ll be a really old man before there’s another ASG down here.

Original Jets never even had a WHA ASG. Kinda stunned.

WPG will get the Draft before an ASG. It seems they give the draft to cities as a test, before handing of the reigns of the ASG.
by MrOmnipotent on Jan 29, 2012 5:17 PM EST up reply actions
That well could be these days; going way back in my own experience, Hartford got the ASG eight years before the draft. Your logic is definitely sound tho.
CBJ finally got the ASG because a massive hotel across the street from Nationwide will be completed in Sept. Or so the story went that I saw.

I know when they initially awarded the Draft to the Cats, they said it was to see how the organization would handle an event of that magnitutde and if the Cats pulled it off, they’d get the ASG. Well, they announced the ASG at the draft, so go figure.

The draft or even a Heritage Classic (if they can build a talented, entertaining enough team), would be a good starter for them.

I think if the Panthers got their acts together and created some buzz again, there could be a chance we get it down here again. I was at both the draft and the all star game…it was an awesome experience
Dara
I caught the Hartford draft in ’94; as you said…awesome experience. So much more now.

Maybe its my internet feed, but I’ve seen more emotion on tv emanate from an empty arena in Sunrise than this ASG.
No life in that barn. Pretty sad. Maybe NBC got it right…

Well, I do know, when they are fined, the money goes to a charity (not sure who picks it) and its a tax write-off for them. But this isn’t money that technically comes out of their salary.
