“[Wednesday vs Washington] is the biggest game of the season, obviously for us, it’s essentially a four-point game.”

just wanted to say i’m ready for the best part of the season. we’re usually worrying about who’s going to be traded and for what at this time of the season and have a blast doing such. this year, it’s who we’re adding and the PLAYOFF PUSH!!

the fun starts tonight. we are all Bolts fans. and for the rest of the year, we are anti- JETS, LEAFS, DEVILS, CAPS and SENS.

go cats go.

Hypothetical: Would you take Carter and his massive contract if it came at a discount because of said contract?
Cap hit is 5.27 million until 2022. (wow)

Jackets have to get out from either Carter or Nash’s contracts; team is currently committed to 16 players at $49M next season. And yes, I’d rather have Nash (shorter term, better player, higher cap hit/salary)

Yes, but remember that Columbus is also a college town and home to a wellpknown party school. OSU provides for ample entertainment for Mr. Carter. It’s not South Beach, but it’s not like it’s Duluth.

Unless of course, they only differ in age by four or five years (I’m thinkin more juniors or seniors or even workin on masters). Philly had a lot more college around town than Colombus does. Temple, Villanova, and Penn to name three. There’s another Catholic basketball school, but the name escapes me. And we all know how Catholic school girls got their reps.

by MrOmnipotent on Feb 1, 2012 2:06 AM EST up reply actions

I think Carter has the ability to change a game and finish plays, exactly the type of player the cats desperately need. The contract is huge, but you could almost argue that he is a bargain at 5.2 million if he scores 30-40 a year like he has in the past and is capable of producing in the future

by Sycamore on Jan 31, 2012 10:34 AM EST up reply actions

could almost argue that he is a bargain at 5.2 million if he scores 30-40 a year

That’s a very big “If”

Litter Box Cats - Your tarp-free Florida Panthers Colossus

by Donny Rivette on Jan 31, 2012 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

oh absolutely, but players like carter dont become available very often and might be worth the gamble. He;s had an awful year but if he gets out of columbus and is motivated he could be the difference maker we need

by Sycamore on Jan 31, 2012 10:41 AM EST up reply actions

Question is who do you sacrifice? Carter’s a center, meaning CBJ will want (at least) one in return, and presumably of the prospect variety.

Huberdeau, Bjugstad and Shore are the likeliest candidates for their needs, as packaging a Matthias or (digging really deep here) Santorelli is only a short-term solution.

Litter Box Cats - Your tarp-free Florida Panthers Colossus

by Donny Rivette on Jan 31, 2012 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

Regarding his “motivation”, even asking such a (reasonable) question is a big red flag. Someone that needs to find motivation can presumably lose it again when things go sour for whatever reason, be it personal issues, employer issues, whatever.

Litter Box Cats - Your tarp-free Florida Panthers Colossus

by Donny Rivette on Jan 31, 2012 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

I think we would have to give up a similar package to what columbus gave up to give him the first place. i would assume that huberdeau is as close to an untouchable as it gets so what about shore and our first this year? Who knows mayeb it wouldnt even be that much if columbus is trying to get rid of him after half a year. Plus his game has taken a bit of a hit this year (as well as his reputation) so maybe thats enough for them to drop such a massive financial commitment. At the end of the day it doesnt necessarily have to be carter, but i think this team desperately needs a player of that calibre.

by Sycamore on Jan 31, 2012 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

This team does not desperately need a player of that caliber.

by Alexander Calloway on Jan 31, 2012 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

Do you think the team should stand pat and do nothing at the deadline?

by Sycamore on Jan 31, 2012 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

Depending on how February goes, I think Tallon should look to move some of the UFA’s for picks.

by Ryan Meier on Jan 31, 2012 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry i’m just really surprised. For years this team has been no where close to a playoff spot, and they have a chance this year and for them to do nothing I think is a mistake. I think moves can be made that dont necessarily have to mortgage the future that can improve this club.

by Sycamore on Jan 31, 2012 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

Why? Why do the Panthers need to make the playoffs this season? Why does this season matter so much? Because it’s the closest since 2008-09?

by Alexander Calloway on Jan 31, 2012 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

It matters because its about creating a winning atmosphere and the way to do that is to start making the playoffs and if they have a chance this year why wouldnt they seize the opportunity? I understand that the rebuild is on but why should we be satsified waiting a few more years for the kids to develop when there is a chance to start creating a winning culture this year. Im sure the last thing tallon wants is to start bringing all the promising prospects he has accumulated the last two drafts into a toxic situation where the team hasnt made the playoffs in 12-13 years. The playoffs this year would be a huge milestone for this franchise and could set them up to be contenders in the near future.

by Sycamore on Jan 31, 2012 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

Im sure the last thing tallon wants is to start bringing all the promising prospects he has accumulated the last two drafts into a toxic situation where the team hasnt made the playoffs in 12-13 years.

So i guess Erik Gudbranson and Jacob Markstrom have been effected from the terrible losing atmosphere, as well as Stephen Weiss.

by Alexander Calloway on Jan 31, 2012 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

Gudbranson and Markstrom have only played this year for a team that is winning and neither has proven much beyond that they have tons of potential to be great players. Maybe an arguement can be made that weiss has suffered considering he was a high pick for the cats and has never scored more than 60 points, and has never played in the playoffs. I’m sure a lot more was expected of him when he was drafted and perhaps if the team had experieneced some success, his indiviudal stats might have also improved. Why do you think its ok if they dont make the playoffs?

by Sycamore on Jan 31, 2012 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

Because its not about this season.

by Alexander Calloway on Jan 31, 2012 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry Alex i think we’re just going to have to agree to disagree. The team has battled through all the injuries and are now in a position to make a run at the playoffs but they need a little help.

by Sycamore on Jan 31, 2012 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

Injuries to who? The only reason this team is in playoff position is because the of short time the Fleischmann-Weiss-Versteeg line was amazing and scoring goals not Jack Skille and his 12 minutes a night.

by Alexander Calloway on Jan 31, 2012 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

I think you`re underestimating the contributions that skille was making to this team before he got injured. He was the only guy that consistently hit and was great on the forecheck – traits that wear down dmen and open up chances for the top line.

by Sycamore on Jan 31, 2012 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

He’s the only guy to consistently hit than why does Matt Bradley lead the team in hits with only two more games than Skille?

by Alexander Calloway on Jan 31, 2012 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

very good point, skille is an energy guy who got into the offensive zone on almost every shift and created attacking momentum, something we’ve lacked recently

by eliran2 on Jan 31, 2012 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

I agree completely, that Skille is underestimated & his absence has partly affected the Cats play of late.

by CLG_74 on Jan 31, 2012 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

Here’s something that I don’t feel either of you are addressing. The team we have right now was good enough for 1st in the S.E. for some good stretches so far, and good enough to still be in playoff position even with injuries and poor effort at times. Why don’t you feel that the team we have as of right now is good enough to make the playoffs?

Hockey is a business, only we fans love it as a game.

by JDMorris on Jan 31, 2012 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

the last two months shows this team is average at best. will they be able to eke out enough wins to make the playoffs maybe – maybe not. Some more scoring would go a long way.

by Todd Little on Jan 31, 2012 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

Your basing your judgment on a time period the team lost 190+ games due to injuries that hit us over the last month and a half?

Steve Diaz
Twitter - @sdiaz6215

by Sdiaz6215 on Jan 31, 2012 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

I think that this team greatly exceeded all expectations early on and that the team we`re seeing now more closely resembles the team that was assembled in the offseason.

by Sycamore on Jan 31, 2012 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, what else can I do? injuries are part of the game and it doesn’t look the team is going to ever be fully healthy this season. Even when healthy the team was not that far above true .500

Also basing it on the lack of scoring that has been a problem all year as well as the inability to string together winning streaks and the fall off of the first line.

by Todd Little on Jan 31, 2012 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

The last two months shows a team that was trying to play with a lineup ravaged by injury.

Now just to be devil’s advocate for a second, if your estimation of the team is accurate and they’re not much better than average, then who on the team is valuable enough to move so that they can keep the scorers in Weiss, Versteeg, and Fleischmann on the team and go after a legitimate scoring threat such as Nash? Who goes? Kulikov? Ellerby? Santorelli (HA!)? The only direction to then go is to move one of our prospects and basically mortgage the future of the team for a tenuous chance at the playoffs this season.

Hockey is a business, only we fans love it as a game.

by JDMorris on Jan 31, 2012 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

When did I say they should go after a player like Nash? Trading a prospect like Shore (who may never want play for the Panthers) or Howden for a player you stick on your second line is NOT mortgaging the future when you have players like Hubs, Bjugs and Markstrom coming.

by Todd Little on Jan 31, 2012 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

Drew Shore shares the same risk of never playing in the NHL as Nick Bjugstad.

by Alexander Calloway on Jan 31, 2012 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

Not saying Shore will or won’t play in the NHL. I said “want to play for the Panthers” as he seems to be possibly looking forward to being a UFA when done with college.

by Todd Little on Jan 31, 2012 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

He’s got another year in any case; see where his stance is – and how far the Panthers have come – then. Besides, I don’t put a lot of stock into the UFA claim, which to my knowledge has no quoted link (if I’m wrong guys please post one).

Anyway, here’s a bit from Dater a few weeks ago.

Why would they bother making a trade for “a guy that you stick on your second line”? In your own estimation it seems like you think the team has plenty of them. How does that trade push the team over the top in the playoff race? Furthermore, how does it benefit the team really at all? What’s the point of making that trade?

Hockey is a business, only we fans love it as a game.

by JDMorris on Jan 31, 2012 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

When did I say we had lots of 2nd liners? Where are you getting that sentiment from? I have been bitching about the lack of production from the second line all year. Even before the injury big.

when you haven’t made the playoffs in ten seasons and are tied for the division lead and you lose games by one goal all the time, adding a 20+ goal scorer to your second line would be a huge help imo.

by Todd Little on Jan 31, 2012 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

Sure, adding a 20+ goal scorer would be helpful, what GM around the league would be willing to trade that type of player to us for prospects and spare parts?

Hockey is a business, only we fans love it as a game.

by JDMorris on Jan 31, 2012 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

NHL GM’s are exactly know for being the most sensible people in the world. There will be guys available who can help the Panthers that can be had for a price the doesn’t involve “mortgaging the future”

by Todd Little on Jan 31, 2012 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

and as far as this “mortgaging the future” business goes think about this:

if you could go back in time when Weiss, Bouwmeester and Horton were talked about like our current prospects are talked about would you trade 1 or 2 or maybe even all three for a star player? Don’t count your prospects before they hatch. A good number of these guys some of you are already penciling into the lineup are just not going to make it.

we’ll see. Personally, I am only expecting them to make minor moves but wouldn’t be surprised to see them do something a little juicier. Hopefully once they get a little healthier more wins will come and the team as constituted will be able to make the playoffs and they can hang on to all their prospects.

I do favor the building from within model but not to the point some people on here seem to.

by Alexander Calloway on Jan 31, 2012 12:47 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly. I know everyone has a huge desire to see this team improve immediately and make the playoffs and push for a Cup, but the reality is that the team is one or two more years away from that. There’s just no point in mortgaging such a bright future for this season IMO.

I’ll play devil’s advocate on this subject:

there is no guarantee any of these kids a lot of you seem to be banking on are going to live up to hype. We have had highly rated crops of prospects before and none were what they were projected to be and most are gone now.I don’t think anyone on here is advocating giving up a Huberdeau or Markstrom but if you can get a proven youngish player for one of the other ones like a Shore or Howden you don’t do it?

by Todd Little on Jan 31, 2012 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

I think we will see some minor deals made but unless they really get the best of another team I’m not expecting anything huge.

by Todd Little on Jan 31, 2012 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

The guarantee works both ways, there’s no guarantee the young player will deliver the same success he had on the other team.

by Alexander Calloway on Jan 31, 2012 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

true, but many would take a proven player over a B or C grade prospect. Part of building a big pile of prospects is being able to swap them for more proven commodities. We’ll find out how much making the playoffs means to Panther brass this season. I have a feeling it’s more important than you are thinking.

by Todd Little on Jan 31, 2012 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

It’s probably the most important thing to them, since it means cash money. It’s also detrimental to the fan base to be reeled in and then fall for the same trap for the 5th time.

Like Soup said, it’s unacceptable to not make the playoffs. Let’s not sell the farm to get there, but it should be something to strive for now.

I enjoy the LACK of OT on this.. I’d prefer to see something more like 24-10-0 and finish up super strong.

By the by.. all my local buds. I’m under the weather, joy of joys. Which means I will have 2 tix for tomorrow game that I likely won’t use. Its not 134’s, its 133’s. I’ve asked 1 person directly if they can use and await a reply. If they can’t anyone else available to go who doesn’t have tix. 133 row 11 seat 1 & 2. You have the perfect view of watching us pile in the goals on the Caps for 2 periods.

19-15 in Panther translates to 13-9-12

I thin it’s going to take more than 93 points to get in this season.

yes, a tough week without regular season NHL. Despite my love of all things hockey I have no interest in the ASG anymore.
They need to come up with something new.,

by Todd Little on Jan 31, 2012 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

It really was terrible. And not because of the Sid/Ovi absences either. Just not hockey.

I’m not sure what they can do. I’d suggest something like Rendez-vous ‘87 (maybe bring over the top Swedish or KHL team) but everyone is so afraid of needless injury that I can’t see that ever happening again.

I have the ASG on my DVR but still haven’t watched it yet. Probably just go thru it real quick and watch the goals.
Was more interested in Bettman’s presser than the game.

Florida’s back end is beat up with Jovanovski and Kulikov shelved for a while after their respective surgeries. Their top line of Tomas Fleischmann, Kris Versteeg and Stephen Weiss had a strong game against the Flyers last Tuesday, but as a whole has been stale recently. There even was talk of breaking it up. Florida is also just 3-6 in the shootout this season. All this and the Panthers remain in the playoff mix, with three huge games against Washington coming up in the next 2.5 weeks.

Florida’s Dale Tallon said from a business standpoint moving the deadline up doesn’t make sense because teams still aren’t sure if they want to be a seller or a buyer at the All-Star break or a few days after. Managers and owners have to consider their own marketplace and team morale before deciding what they are going to be in that particular season.

“You want to maximize your ability to sell tickets and keep people interested in your market,” Tallon said. “If you do it too soon it might lose some of your luster. If you’re selling you want to delay it because you don’t want to demoralize your team unless you’re way out of it.”

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 31, 2012 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, they should not have screwed with the original arena design so much. Still not that much smaller the MTS Centre. with a high ticket price and the Islanders already impressive cable $ haul maybe they could make a go of it there at least until they got something else permanent built.

Not that I believe in their rankings, but Hockey’s Future has him listed as an 8.0D, meaning loads of talent, but odds are, he’ll never play in the NHL.

Who has the easiest schedule the rest of the way? From Elias: The NHL teams with the toughest remaining schedule (based on the combined points percentage of its remaining opponents) are Nashville (.596), Chicago (.586), New Jersey (.583), Columbus (.576) and Buffalo (.575). The NHL teams with the easiest remaining schedule are Florida (.532), St. Louis (.541), Colorado (.542), San Jose (.543) and Vancouver (.543).
