Thursday Caterwaul: Panthers GameDay Open Forum

“After how the last game ended against [Florida], it’s going to be a pretty intense and passionate game. I’m not going to hold a grudge, but it’s not something you’re going to forget either. I still got a little bit of a black eye, so you remember it that much more when you see yourself in the mirror every day.”

Why last night rocked:

  • MTL over WPG, 7-3; Canadiens have been an extended New Year gift
  • BOS over NJ, 6-1; that there makes for a 60-goal differential on the season, courtesy of a club that's played the fewest games in the East

Why last night jonesed:

  • Habs let up after 7

Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla:

  • WPG at TOR, 7 p.m.; Leafs are 8-4-1 vs Threts at ACC since lockout
  • CGY at BOS, 7; Flames thought they had it rough on Tuesday?
  • CHI at PHI, 7; Frolik due for a 12-point night
  • TB at OTW, 7:30; flip a coin

Next up for the Cats:

Seriously? Be here at 6:30 this evening and we'll explain.

Did you know:

FLA is 5-3-0-2 after a two-day (or more) layoff this season

Panthers playoff chances:

Did not play; playoff odds up 2.4 to 85.4% per Sports Club Stats

On the table:

Krys Barch - finally - gets his hearing (and on that topic, here is an excellent "official's take" from none other than Kerry Fraser regarding the issue at hand, with a bit of relevant history; not to be missed)...No surprise that G Jacob Markstrom was recalled - as expected - on Wednesday...Making the case for a full overtime in regular season NHL play, courtesy of Copper & Blue...Torts gets fined for his conspiracy comment following the Winter Classic. Said the coach: "I tainted the Winter Classic with my mouth and I shouldn't have." Lucky for the Panthers, they don't get to see his angry mug again until, oh wait...A bundle of NHL Power Rankings via Japers' Rink...Blackhawks' Dan Carcillo gets seven games for this, his third suspendable offense of the year...Many thanks to the Habs for last night's performance while hosting Winnipeg. Related: might Montreal fans be telling us all something with that lame & unoriginal "Ole Ole" soccer chant?

Local Knowledge

I needs it.

I’m coming to town tomorrow for the next Panthers home game (take a wild guess which team I cheer for), and I’m staying in Miami Beach. Can any locals recommend a good spot in Miami Beach where I could watch the Canucks/Bruins game on Saturday afternoon (i.e., a bar with NHL Network)? Would be much appreciated!

I also must say I’m really looking forward to the Canucks/Panthers game. I don’t know about you guys, but I wasn’t expecting this Panthers team to gel as well as they have, so this makes for a fun-but-tough road trip for Vancouver (Tampa notwithstanding). Please beat the Rangers for us, though, because it makes everyone happier.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head would be duffy’s @ north miami beach. Im sure you could give them a call and either find out if theyll have the game on or if they can put it on.. usually bars are pretty open to putting specific things on if a customer asks but finding out if they have say the NHL package that gets all of the games etc is also good info to have if the game is in fact on nhl network theyll def have it

by Rob PKane McMahon on Jan 5, 2012 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

As far as I know Duffy’s has DirecTV with the NHL Center Ice Package meaning that they should be able to accomodate a visitor wanting to watch a Nucks-Broons matchup. If you go to their website you can click through to the DirecTV Center Ice schedule and even see what channel the game will be on so you can be specific with your bartender/server. Just ask nicely and they will be more than happy to work with you. I had a work event at a Duffy’s in Boca Raton not too long ago and they put on the Panthers-Flames game for me.

While I’m at it, what IS next to the arena, for that matter? Besides what appears to be a mall, a suburb, and some sort of nature conservancy area?

by Adam Nowek on Jan 5, 2012 9:42 AM EST up reply actions

Sawgrass is more than just a mall, its like a billion square miles of awesome shops. (bring your walking shoes if you go) it’s a cool place to hit up a few hours before a game and maybe grab some food beforehand if u prefer the sitdown and dine type atmosphere.. or you can hit up cheesecake factory there after the game where you have a chance to spot some nucks/cats players who tend to dine there from time to time after games. (I spotted TONS of players there in the past, grabbed Broduer, Roy, Forsberg, Sakic etc etc auto’s in the past)

Adam, I’m not sure if they have the Center Ice package but good places to check in Miami Beach would be Playwright’s Pub (305) 534-0667 and Waxy O’ Connor’s (305) 534-7824

by Todd Little on Jan 5, 2012 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

That’s pretty much it. A mall, a suburb and the swamp. The Everglades is literally across the street from the arena. As Rob says, there’s some places to eat around there, but it’s fairly unexciting otherwise. I’d highly recommend spending more time around the beach.

Agreed, He probably said something that wasn’t considered as offensive as the call would lead us to believe, but the fact that he got a game misconduct and all the hullabaloo that has surrounded the call in the media, means that it would look bad if they just let him go.

Sounds like the refs were the racist ones. Sounded like a regular comment.

Nope. It’s a racist comment because of who it was directed at — perhaps unintentionally so, but definitely racist due to the historical racist use of monkey/ape comparisons for people of color and the linkage of bananas with monkeys/apes.

by angellen on Jan 5, 2012 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

Racism lives on because of that train of thought. Just sayin’.

Why can’t it just be a regular comment from one human to another about how banana peels are slippery when on the floor, or at least thats what cartoons tell us.

Read this and then talk to me about “cracker” being as offensive as slurs or racially insensitive remarks leveled at people of color.

Speaking from my own experience, I have been way less offended every time I’ve been called a cracker than I have been every time I’ve been called a k*ke. Why? Because my white girl self is a cracker, but as a Jew, I am part of a group that has been systematically oppressed for centuries and it hurts to realize that people think you are less based on your heritage.

I guess only white people can slip on banana peels nowadays. I can understand how it can be construed as “insensitive” but this seems like a case of over political correctness.

can’t help but feel bad for the guy. An innocuous statement made to anybody else on that ice that night and we would never have heard a peep about it. That same statement is now going to have him labeled as a racist. It’s unfortunate that this statement gets a suspension, yet Wayne Simmonds calling Sean Avery a “f****t” during a game gets nothing because “there was no proof.” It’s pretty damn disgusting, if you ask me.

On the flip side, poor poor choice of words Barchy. In this world of political correctness, you HAVE to be cognizant of how your words are going to be iinterpreted. Even though the intent was of the “funny ha ha” variety, the fact that a racial undertone could have been applied to the comment means you have to think a bit more before your speak. An unfortunate situation for all.

Does anyone know if this kind of suspension is still handled by Shanahan? I’d be interested to see a video or hear an explanation of why it’s a suspension instead of a fine or anything at all when Barch was told “if it was racial he wouldve got 5-7 games”. So the NHL decided it wasn’t racial, but suspended him 1 game anyway? Curious.

This one game suspension feels more like the league couldn’t admit that the official over reacted. They’re standing by the official as much as the Panthers are standing by Barsch in this situation. The whole “if it was racial” is a tacit admission that he didn’t actually do/say anything really wrong but they had to do something to save face.

In light of non-suspension of Simmons after the Avery thing this is almost like the league telling its players that homophobia is still cool.

Seriously? Cliff Viner is a good guy. He didn’t know what Barch said when he was approached about the situation. Don’t start talking trash about the team’s owner just because he was asked about an incident before he knew the details and explained that the team wouldn’t tolerant the type of behavior that was described to him to have taken place.

He has to maintain a certain position on that type of behavior in the community. The fact that this whole thing ended up being relatively innocent shouldn’t have any bearing on Cliff Viner and the fact that he stated the team has a zero tolerance attitude toward racial bigotry or the use of racial slurs, the team should take that position and that is in no way “throwing Barch under the bus”.

Figured he’d probably need a short conditioning stint with the Rampage before he gets up here. As far as Santorelli is concerned I think there’s a real possibility that it turns into an Ellerby/Gudbranson situation where he and Madden switch off the press box seats.

Sorry about the Barch suspension

But I wish that the term ‘political correctness’ would disappear from the English language – it implies that people need to suppress the unpleasant thoughts in their head(s) to avoid public condemnation. People should avoid making racist/sexist/homophobic jokes because…well, because they’re just not funny. Would Barch have directed the banana joke at Cammalleri? Who knows.

And on a hockey related note – congrats on your team’s success! It’s always nice to see teams in non-traditional markets succeeding (I’m a Ducks fan, lol). Good luck against the Rangers tonight.

In the past, they’ve given out an item to be signed (team yearbook with everyone’s picture in it) and allowed one more. So, a lot of people would get the yearbook signed and then a jersey or something. If that’s still the case, you might be allowed to not get the handout signed and get two other things signed instead. Worth asking. They will push the line ahead pretty quickly, though.

As a minority I wouldn’t be and I am not offended by Barch’s comment. As for Mr. Viner, I see him at almost every home game. I used to go out of my way to say hello to him. Now when he see’s me walking around he goes out of his way to say hi and shake my hand. Love having a owner like him. Very down to earth guy
